I'd like to hear stories about you being cheated or stories where you have cheated others, no matter what your reasons.

My story is about a very highly talented player who will remain anonymous for the time being. :D

I was playing pool with a very good player who was giving me an enormous spot at one pocket. It's been a long time ago and I don't remember the exact spot but it was a few balls as I recall. Anyway, I am giving the guy a run for his money and I can see he is feeling the pressure of the spot and know I have a small chance of winning. This guy seldom loses as he almost always matches up better than most.

I am in the process of running out and winning an important game on the hill and in the process of placing my bridge hand on the table and getting ready for the shot, I accidentally touch one ball and move it about one-half inch. I tell my opponent because in one pocket, your opponent has the right to put the object ball back where it was or to leave it where the moved ball lies. My opponent comes back over to put the ball back where it was originally and moves the moved object ball into a position so that I no longer have a shot at my hole. He moves the object ball a few inches from where it originally sat and I'm like waiting for him to say he is joking but only silence. Finally, I ask him nicely, if he is joking and he says he thinks that is where the object ball originally lay. I then tell him to go F*** himself and immediately quit, not paying and hoping he would attempt to collect for the set I quit on. I don't like outright cheaters and this guy is a known scoundrel who will do anything to win.

This isn't Father Joey asking you to tell your stories about your own personal cheating stories  but if you have one to share it could be fun to share them for posterity as well as the ones where you have been cheated; however if you tell one about yourself, I may offer my brand of absolution.

Interesting...

I was playing a TOP player once and nudged a ball...

When he replaced it, I could no longer see the OB I was shooting at!

I learned something new that day.

I was playing a guy in the State semi finals. I put a real good safety on him,,there's was no way he could hit his ball.

He walked up to the table and looked at me,,,then put his tip on the cue and nudged it. Barley touching it and walked away smiling.

I have to say ,,,I had 3 balls on the table ,,all open and a very easy out with ball in hand.

Well I walked up and grabbed the cue,,,,,,,he starts screaming ,,,Foul!! Foul!!!

Got the REF over ,,,and YEP,,,, I didnt ask if it was BIH. So it was a foul.

He had BIH now and won the game. I almost put the beat down on him,,,very close to a fight,,,,, Some chicken arse chit here. Lame!!
It was clearly what he wanted me to do. Was clearly BIH for me and he looked right at me as he nudged the cue.

At little while later,,heard a bunch of yelling across the room. He done it again to someone else. Another guy was pissed at him. I went over and told all involved,,that he done it to me earlier.

LAME!! Is all I can say.

Was playing a guy once at a hall that had the beads above the table to keep score. At my home room we dont have those, so I usually just use coins on the table to keep the count. Anyway, as were playing a race to 7 the score is 5-5, I win the next game but forget to move my coin. As were playing the 12th game, I notice this and ask him. Of course he says you already moved it. So I ask the entire room, who has been watching closely. They all agree that I didnt move it. The guy wont budge. So I tell him that it doesnt matter, Im gonna win the set anway. I proceed to win the set, and he quits even after playing 2 sets. This after he had been talking a bunch of shit about locking up some 500 dollar sets if I came to his pool hall. We were only betting 200 a set.

Sounds like a Eddie Brown move rt der ! :D

I've seen so much cheating in leagues/tournaments that not only can I not remember them all, I wouldn't take the time to type them all out anyways. Here's a couple/few that come to mind:

APA 8-ball league. My wife had been struggling in the previous weeks to get a win (seems like she always shot someone that was playing better than their skill level was :frown:). Finally, she's shooting another woman with an equal skill level. She's in a hill-hill game with her opponent at the table. Her opponent has stripes and there are still 5 or 6 of her balls on the table. My wife has solids and has 2 balls left (not counting the 8-ball). Her opponent is shooting at a ball uptable but grazes the 6-ball (which was about a foot away from the cueball) and moves it about 3 inches, missing her shot of course. My wife asks her if it is ball-in-hand and she says no, that it was a good hit, that she hit one of her balls, which she did somehow. My wife and everyone on our team told her that she grazed the 6-ball and moved it about 3 inches, but neither she nor anyone on HER team said they saw that. Of course in the APA, it's the shooters call so we couldn't do anything about it. What a crock of caca. There is no way you cannot see a ball move 3 inches when it is only a foot away from the cueball. My wife was so pissed-off that she lost her composure and lost the game/match.

Also APA 8-ball league. I was playing another SL6. We were even at this point, 2 games to 2. His turn at the table. I was down to my last object ball, he still had about five or six balls left. He had a ball on the short rail about three to four inches from the corner pocket (his "problem ball") and the cue ball close to the cross-side pocket, a VERY makeable shot. My last object ball was at the other end of the table from this ball on the short rail and behind some "traffic". The table was wide open. He could have easily run out. He's taking his practice strokes like he's gonna shoot this problem ball and get it out of the way for the runout but he pulls up his stroke and slow rolls the cueball right smack into the ball, not moving the ball at all and the cueball coming to rest right on it. I asked him if it was a "no-rail" foul and he said that it was a good hit because the ball wasn't frozen (but we really both knew that it was). Of course I'm a bit upset that he took advantage of me thinking he was shooting this shot so I didn't go check the ball and declare it frozen. My fault to a point, but still a bit underhanded. He ends up getting ball-in-hand and running out the rack. I'm not overly upset at this time because I SHOULD have went and declared the ball frozen anyway. Then......the very next game I am in a similar situation whereas I have one ball left to shoot and he has many. I play a good safety on him to where the only shot he has is to kick at a three-ball cluster near the side pocket. He kicks lightly off the rail, clips an object ball and nothing hits a rail. Again I ask if this is a no-rail ball-in-hand and he says no, that he hit the object ball before he hit the rail which was caca because you could tell by the path the two balls took that the rail was struck first, but he wouldn't back-off. I broke down my cue at this point and told him if winning an APA match meant that much to him then he could just have the win on a forfeit. I left that league that night for greener pastures (which I found)!

Lastly, I'm playing in a handicapped 9-ball tourney at a well-known poolhall in Ft. Worth. I'm spotting my opponent 2 games on the wire and we're hill-hill. I'm shooting at a 4-ball down the rail with some hard force-follow to get on my next ball uptable, the 5-ball. The 7-ball is very near the corner pocket where I am leaning over the table to shoot. On my stroke, I brush the 7-ball into the pocket somehow (either my elbow or my cue stick). I make the shot, get good shape on the 5-ball and inform the opponent that I brushed the 7-ball into the pocket. We ask around to players on the other tables what to do here and they all say to place the ball as near as possible to where it was and for me to continue shooting (keep in mind this is a cue ball foul only rule being used). Well, he decides to go to the TD and ask her what should be done and she says the same thing but adds that if the 7-ball would have impeded the progress of the rolling cue ball, then it would have been a BIH foul. When he came back to the table and told me what the TD said, he called a BIH foul on me even though the path of the cue ball would not even have come anywhere near the 7-ball. Just like the scenario I posted above, it frustrated me so much, I told him to go ahead and take BIH if you want to win that "way". He ran out for the match, sending me to the losers bracket. Weird thing about this story is that he never even saw the 7-ball get brushed into the pocket and would have never known if I hadn't have told him so. What an incredible d*ckhead. Everyone around my table told me after the game that it was crappy the way it was handled and that this kid had pulled crap like that before. I don't think he was well-liked in that room. I certainly didn't like him on that night!!!

Sorry for being long-winded.

And this guy got outa there without someone handing him his ass???

My buddy is nearly positive he got "jarred" playing a one pocket match. Of course he went on to lose. Now the guy won't give him a chance to get even because he knows he cannot win unless he drugs him.

The funniest one was the night a drunk stranger came into the bar. He starts betting on the side.
Tells me he wants to bet 20 on my buddy against me. We were only betting 3 bucks against each other.
As I was racking, the guy leaves to get a beer.
I told my friend to lose and he gets 10 bucks.

I am playing a guy in a bowling alley. I am beating him and it is on the wire maybe like $30.00. At a point he says, "I am going to the snack bar and get a coffee". I say, "I'll get it and get me a small Coke" and hand him a 10 dollar bill to pay for it. Needless to say I get stiffed for what was no the wire and lose the $10.00. Never saw this guy again but he gave me a great story I have been able to tell for like 40 years.

That happened to me and my backer once. Funny thing is, the guy we played is the nicest guy in the world. Never had any issues with him, and I highly doubt it was him. Ended up playing him again and I won twice the amount I lost.

My story is also about a very highly talented player who will remain anonymous for the time being. Lets imagine he has a very common name like, lets say, hmmmmmm, Adam Smith....

We're playing in an 8-ball tourney last weekend. I break dry and the balls are all jumbled up and there is zero chance of getting out which ever side you take. I joke with him that that was my safety break. At the foot end of the table is the 1 and 8. They are off angle from each other about 3/8" apart, see below.

If I was left with the layout I would have made a solid and played safe because if you take stripes you have to play pinpoint position on the 8 to not foul the 1 ball. He chooses stripes and starts planing his attack. Three different times he comes to the side of the table, gets down at table level, eyeballs the 8 ball, and points to where he needs the cueball to be (dead straight in). Either side of the straight in line and it doesn't go.... So he proceeds to try to get out and fails to break out a cluster up table. He is left shooting over the 8-ball at a ball up table. As he is addressing the shot he drops his cue on the 8 and it moves forward about 4 inches.

I tell him to move it back. He moves it back 2 inches when it really rolled 4....... It now goes easy from literally half of the table!

I'm like "Really??? Cmon??? Is that where you really think it was?".

He says "Yeah, it went easy."

I'm like "If it went so easy why did you get down and eagle eye it 3 different times?".

He's like "Where do you think it was?"

I point to the exact spot....

He says "If you have to lie and cheat to win, go ahead and put it where you think it was....". Then as I go to move it back he tells me "The reason you don't play good anymore and can't get back to where you were is you're WEAK!!! And since you're weak, you have to lie and cheat to win!!!".

This sets me dead on tilt..... Since he dead tried to f me by moving the ball back 2 of the 4 inches and then slanders me, I move the ball back to where it was plus about an 1/8" further to where it doesn't go. Had he not got personal with the insults I would have moved it back to the exact spot.

The he starts really coming with insults and slander.... Then it turns into a 2-3 minute jaw fest. I win from there.... And get the public opinion vote from those that witnessed it....

This reminded me of a time in the poolhall when I saw a couple at the jukebox looking as though they were picking out tunes. I liked the kind of music that was playing at that time so I ambled over and gave them a $10 bill and told them to play whatever they liked. I went back over to my table to keep score for a league 9-ball match. Eight or ten minutes later I noticed the music had stopped. I looked over to where the couple had been sitting and they had split, taking my $10 bill with them of course !!!

Thats some funny shit. Some people are seriously cheap asses. They prob thought they had just won the lottery with that $10.

Good for you that you not only won, but you beat him at his own "game" (I'm not talking about the 8-ball game here ;)).

Funny, I've read on this site MANY good things about your opponent in that match. I guess at some point ANY poolplayer might have a lapse of reasoning.

In all the things I have done and all the places I have been to in my life, I have found poolplayers and poolhalls to be some of the most shadiest people/places of all. It should be made clear that I also have met and played with some of the finest people I have come to know in my lifetime too!!!

Good thread, JoeyA!!!

Great topic.

I was playing at a tavern for a couple of drinks. I had been doing well all night and controlling the table. So here comes this guy and wants to bet 25 on a race to 5. I said sure and broke the balls. After winning the first 4 games I tell him I'm heading to the bathroom and I'll be right back. I start to walk into the bathroom (that's about 30 feet away from the table) and notice its full so I wait outside. I look over at my table just in time to see this guy lick his finger and stick it into the chalk!
So I finish my business and return to the table. Noticing that there is only 1 piece of chalk at this crappy tavern, I decided to act like I was chalking after every shot but don't and just use center ball hits.
This confuses the guy into thinking the chalk is ok now and after I play a nice safety he decides to use his own tainted chalk.
Sure enough genius boy miscues and I take BIH and the win the set. After he pays me I told him that the chalk at this place sucks!

I've known the kid for a long time and have never had a single problem with him to this point..... I've heard stories of him being out of line before but its the first time I've witnessed it.

Not really a cheating story, but I played a league match a few weeks back where I dropped a brutal safety shot on my opponent... he thought it was BIH and nearly picked up the CB before I stopped him. The shot had barely grazed my ball (definitely good though, because before the shot I could still see a speck of white on the solid near the table surface and it was completely hidden after the shot) and it certainly looked very close from a distance. I'm a very honest person, and really, it's league... what's the point in cheating? the ball in question was very close to the cb and I was shooting jacked up, almost away from the OB... no idea why the guy was standing 10+ ft from the table/hadn't called a ref on a shot that would obviously be controversial. He accepted my "fair hit" call somewhat bitterly and fires dark looks at me every time I see him now... What am I supposed to do??? I don't want to stir trouble/beef, but at the same time I pulled a good shot so he didn't deserve BIH???
