Pool players who take Vicodin or Hydrocodone

Above poster may be thinking of Tramadol which mimics an opiate but also has SSRI qualities...also hard to come off of

theres a newer kind of big brother to tramadol i had been taking for a while
Nucynta. narcotic with norepinephrine inhibitor. worked for me for longer periods of time than percosets and felt more relief-to-drowsiness/foginess level than the percosets too. may have been the pain relief but i slept better on it too.

I don't know about your medical condition but if it is nerve-induced pain there are procedures to cauterize the nerve to relieve pain.

ODR-opiate detox recovery

There are several sub forums covering every aspect of painkiller addiction.
This is like the AZ Billiards of drug forums.
I got more help there in one night, then I did in 12-days (until I busted out) of rehab.

Hydrocodone / Vicodin compared to oxycodone-oxycontin-percocet has a very small opiate content, but people still addicted.
I would recommend eating before you take the pills.

Oh yeah...

I have been taking up to 4 x 20 mg of Oxy for years now due to a brain op.

Mood swings. Yes it is possible no matter how many you take per day. Your body is used to the narcotic and it wants some whether you feel need it or not.
If you were getting withdrawal symptoms, believe me, you'd know it.

Sometimes the cure can be the problem. I couldn't begin to describe the pain involved in withdrawals.
The best I could tell you is that you would feel like you have the onset of flu like symptoms. Your skin crawls.

I didn't know about withdrawals until just a couple of years ago. I've had severe problems with my lower back for the better part of a decade now and have taken hydrocodone (vicodin) for years.

I had only taken it when a lower back pain episode would occur though.

When my patellar tendon ruptured (completely detached from my knee cap) I had to constantly take pain meds for two to three months during the recovery process.

I tried to quit them cold turkey like I always did... Big Mistake.

I started shaking, sweating profusely, had muscle cramps and aches. It was nasty.

I had to start off taking two at night just to be able to go to sleep, then one a night, then one every other night.

I had to ween myself off of them.

Now, I just recently ran out of Hydrocodone and I only have one Flexiril left for my back, but it just doesn't do the trick any more for my back, so I need to ask my doctor for another type of medication for it.

For those of us who are taking pain medicine particularly Vicodin or hydrocodone I was wondering if you were dealing with any side effects. I have been taking this for a long time and I have noticed that if I take 2 one day and 2 the next day (I dont take them daily, usually only 2-4 a week) The following day when I haven't taken any I sometimes get unreasonably angry. Maybe withdraws but I doubt it from the low amounts I take.

I know it sounds funny or stupid but I'm serious. Sometimes I find my anger is almost out of control.

I don't lash out at anyone or hit people or anything like that, but I do feel that way. I don't act on it although I did get into a big argument with my boss on Monday, he was wrong and I called him out on it. Maybe not the smartest thing but oh well.

I have been thinking about having my doctor switch me to another medication but I have no idea what I should take. Has anyone had these issues? Have you had more success with a different medicine?

I almost posted this on the NPR section but I took one look at the titles of the posts there and decided that wouldn't be a good place to discuss anger issues! Sorry if I offended anyone by putting this here.

nah bro that's the Dt's for sure. you gotta taper off or quit all together. had a friend that got on that stuff real bad. he'd take 30+ a day

that irritated feeling is because your body is't getting what it's become used to

There is a new pill that isn't classified as a narcotic. It works for some people. Unfortunately I can't remember the name at the moment. Several people recommended it for pain and I discussed it with my doctor. Ultimately I didn't see any gain to rocking the boat. While it isn't a narcotic it seemed to have all the same risks.

Hu

Hu, I think you may be talking about SUBOXONE. This medication is used to treat chronic pain, it is also used to Detox from Opioid addiction.

It is however, an Opioid but it doesn't have the same effects because of the way they have changed the Chemical Compound. For instance you do not get the Euphoric effects from it, but it is still very addicting.

Even with that said it is classified as an Opioid and it is also dispensed as such.

I have to take Norco (hydrocodone) for pain. If I take a full one it makes me a little dizzy, I have been taking a half for several years now and it does not affect my game at all. If I wait to long and start to hurt it will affect the way I play.

I use hydrocodone on a regular basis. Two things happen to me.
1. Unable to maintain focus in pool.
2. Unable to sleep at night.

randyg

Another member told me to try taking magnesium pills to help me sleep, It did wonders for me. I had to adjust my dosage at first but it helped me alot.

I agree with Poolplayer on this.....I take Lortab 10/500 3-6 a day for about 10 years now.......But it is a must have due to a severe neck injury......

yeah I was on percoset when I had the DT's...

Yeah I was taking Flexiril, Vicodin AND Percoset when my knee went bad and then I had the DT's when I tried to quit ALL 3 at once. I ended up straight up cold turkey quiting the percoset but had to take the vicodin to go to sleep and ween myself off of it.

Stopping cold turkey can be very dangerous and will make you very sick. I had to almost carry my dad to the hospital when he ran out of his oxy. It like a heroin addict trying to quit cold turkey.

For the most part I am ignoring glaring misinformation posted in this thread. I just don't want to butt heads with people and that's the way these things always go.

But I will make a couple of simple corrections. DTs (Delirium Tremens) have been mentioned a couple of times. DTs have nothing to do with this at all, they are associated with alcohol withdrawal, not opiate withdrawal, ever. Alcohol withdrawal can in fact be deadly and so can be quite dangerous.

The withdrawal symptoms that have been so well described here are in fact not dangerous. The person withdrawing will swear they are dying, but this withdrawal is not life threatening or dangerous.

As spanky79 said it is "like a heroin addict trying to quit cold turkey". That is true, it is exactly the same. The great misconception is that it is dangerous. It isn't.

If you have an issue with your medication, talk to your doctor. I did see comments like "I might have my doctor change my medication". How about leaving that up to him?

Actually Vicoden is hydrocodone and acetaminophen (tylenol). Same with Lortab.

Percocet is oxycodone and acetaminophen. Vicodin and Percocet are instant relief pain meds. Roxicodone is just oxycodone, it's a instant relief too.

The extended relief one is the oxycontin (oxycodone). ER pills are designed to release a little of the medicine initially, then release more over time. They're designed to last about 8 hours. The idea being that you get more of a steady stream of medicine and avoid the "up and down" feelings. Instead of your body getting a big jolt of meds at once and you going "up" and then "down" hard, it's spread out over time. Drug addicts or people looking to abuse the drug, would crush the ER pills, so they would get the entire pills medicine all at once.

Another pain med that is extremely dangerous is Duragesic or Fentanyl, which is a patch that has medicine in it, that slowly releases medicine over the period of about 3 days. Fentanyl is 100 times stronger then morphine, so this stuff is really dangerous. Once again, drug addicts would try to get all of the medicine at once, so they would chew them or suck on them. Well, a lot of people would die from Respiratory Depression, as the pain meds would slow your breathing down to where you would just stop breathing all together. Cool high, huh?

Oxycodone is stronger then hydrocodone.

Once you become opioid tolerate, then it gets hard to come off them. If you take them every day, for long periods of time, then you most certainly will have withdrawals if you stop them. That will be a nightmare, let me tell you. I forgot I was going to run out when I was in Vegas, and I hadn't found a pain dr to get my prescriptions refilled.. well I ran out and it was hell. It got so bad after a few days, I couldn't take it anymore and went to the emergency room is how bad it was. It's a double edged sword, it's the only thing that helps me with my chronic pain and I've tried about every kind of pain meds there are. I tried oxycontin and it didn't work for me, plus there is no generic, so it's expensive as hell. So the IR oxycodone is what works for me. I also took Nuvigil to help with the drowsiness. That's some good stuff, makes you feel alert with no "jittery" feelings like from any other stimulants. But of course, no generic again, so expensive drug.

The stigma of taking pain meds is unbelievable too. Not only are Dr's scared to prescribe it to you, the pharmacy looks at you funny and gives you crap once in awhile and most everyone that finds out you take pain meds, they look at you like a drug addict. Everyone sees all the news reports of people abusing Oxycontin, people dying from Oxycontin, people getting high from Oxycontin... with a steady stream of that every night on the news, if people hear the words pain meds, it brings up a image of a someone getting high.

Another thing that is misunderstood... is that people get high from this stuff. People with actual pain, do not get high from pain meds. I did most every kind of drug there was when I was younger. I know all about getting high. I don't get high on pain meds because my pain is real. Now if you don't have pain, you may well catch a buzz. Well, it's those a**holes who have made it humiliating for us that do need them for pain. The people that crush them to snort it up, or the ones that shoot it up, all the people that abuse pain meds, have made it near impossible for people with real pain to get them anymore. Even with the new oxycontin forumula designed with a new filler, to make the pills stick together and chewy to make it very difficult to crush up, people still find a way to abuse them.

I can't imagine you taking a couple of hydrocodone pills once in a while, to lead to any sort of withdrawals as described in your post.

Bottom line.. if you take opioid pain meds, be careful with them, don't ever run out if you're a long time user or you're in for one helluva bad time:frown: For the public... please stop looking at everyone like they're a drug addict if they take pain meds. Yes, there are many people that abuse pain meds, just like they abuse every other kind of drug, but there also people that legitimately have pain, need to take drugs for their pain, and those people are NOT getting high off of them, they're just trying to get thru each day with some kind of normalcy.

here is a page that has many of the pain meds and a little info on each one http://www.painclinic.org/aboutpain-medicationtypes.htm

I appreciate your comments and agree totally. As I posted earlier I am consulting my doctor but I would like to know if others have had the same problem and found a suitable substitute. I would just like to hear from others that have possibly been there and found something else that worked for them. Then when I talk to my doc again I can ask him, "What do you think about trying this?"

I had an rx for vicodin one and the only issue I had was I couldn't miss a ball for days.

Implement cheating device.:o

Thanks for your input. I hope I don't come off to anyone here as an addict. I am far from it. In fact, my doctor had me on the 750's and I asked to be moved down to the 500's. The reason is 1 750 wasn't enough but 2 was too many for me. So now I take 2 500's and it is almost right, still a bit much. Sometimes I cut one in half.

LOL...my point exactly. People that are not abusing them have to preface talking about them by telling people they aren't a drug addict. How screwed up is that. If chemo drugs got people high, people that had cancer would have to say they actually had cancer before discussing it.

One final caution...anyone using ER (extended release) drugs...never cut them up.
