Whats up with billiards supply stores?

Have you EVER heard of VOLUMN DISCOUNTS? Like I said earlier, you must have been born yesterday!!!!

If you go to Instroke directly their prices are CONSIDERABLY higher than for the same cases than on Muellers or Pool Dawg. Same with Willard Products. I couldn't wait for Mueller to get its supply in from Willard, so I ordered directly from Willard. The guy charged me $75 for the same thing listed on Muellers for $60. He said that the resellers would get mad if tried to undercut them in price.

you think i was born yesterday and i think you're an asshole. only one of us is right

The store I've dealt with most of my adult life is located right outside Memphis proper.

I sent so much business to the original owner that while he gave anyone who walked in the door 25%,myself and anyone that walked in with me got almost double that,no questions asked, even if the owner was not present.

Example. A buddy wanted a particular Schon. We walked in and found what he wanted, tagged at 685.00.

The guy behind the counter quoted us a price of 550.00 plus tax. I asked if Bill was around. He said he had already left for the day. I told him to call him and tell him I was there to buy a Schon. He called, said I was there to buy a cue,his expression changed, and he hung up.

We got that Schon for 400.00 out the door,no tax,and even got to hand-pick the shaft my buddy wanted.

The store has downsized and changed owners, but the new guy takes real good care of me too.

Over the course of just over 20 years,I was responsible for sending at least 150k (maybe more) worth of business to that place,so because I washed their hands, they wash mine .

The only online store I've really dealt with was Nielsen's,aka joerackem on eBay,and they've done me right too.

As far as 35.00 for a packaged and not installed Moori, and 4.00 for individual Triangles,I would have embarrassed that person to the point their price would have come right in line. Tommy D.

Here in santa fe me and a few other folks sell pool supply's. But we have a semi local store 60 miles away in albuquerque called Dr. Billiard they are more than fair with their prices for everything even though they have to cover their overhead. To the point where if I don't have it I send my folks up there. When you have good people like them you just have to support.

well because it wasn't your shop i doubt that. it couldn't have been the case anyway. the shop owner was white not a minority. and as you've pointed out only white people are capable of compassion and empathy so he'd have taken pity on me and given me the retail price

Just to help you out here, I charge $30 for Moori tips installed, $10 for Triangles, Le Pro's, or Elkmaster tips. Now there are many AZ Members who have had work done or purchased things at my Pro-shop to back up my claims. Now when it comes to forms of payment excepted currently I except Visa and Mastercard along with cash. But in your case we may also except food Stamps if it helps, just let me know Cowboy!!!!!!;)

Now back to what I have pointed out, it only makes sense that the store owner was white. I doubt there would have any issue if the store owner was a minority, just like everything you post or have posted there must be some kind of racial influence to the post. You just can't get past it and your comments above only further prove that to be true!!!!!;)

How sad, how very very sad!!!!!:(

I get any Kamui I want installed for $20 here by a highly respected retailer. They are top notch.

Greg

your the one that brought up race. its your little obsession

Most of the billiard supply stores that I have shopped at only care about selling pool tables, game tables, lighting, pool room furnature, hot tubs, etc.
If you think they don't know anything about tips, try to buy a j/p.
I consider these stores more like furnature stores, and they really aren't part of the billiard community.
When these stores go under it doesn't affect any of us.
The people in Denver like myself who are in the tip business know which tips various cuemakers and repair guys have, we work together, so we really don't need these so-call supply stores.

For the sake of full disclosure, you can go to Best Quality Billiards in Lakewood and buy Lepro tips that have been durometer hardness tested.
Best Quality seems to know what they are doing, they have been around forever, and they aren't that expensive.

look here man there's no need to get your panties in a bunch and try to be all condescending. i've heard of volume discounts sure. that's got little to nothing to do with some guy that runs a billiards shop but knows nothing about billiards or the equipment. the guy had a box of triangle tips that had to be a few years old. so even if he bought 100 boxes or 1 there's no way he paid more than 50 bucks for the box. meaning he's still charging way too much for 1 tip. if he'd had said 2-3 bucks i'd have bought one just for the convenience.

instead of reading the thread and relating to it, because everyone that's been to a billiards store has probably dealt with the same bs, you've decided to be a dick.

bulk buying or not if i can buy one box of 50 tirangle tips online for under $40 then he didn't need to order a huge number of boxes of tips to offer a better price. he's just charging that huge mark up because he's used to people knowing less than he does about equipment prices.

35 bucks for a moori tips is crazy. $4 for a triangle is crazy. even at pool halls they usually sell for 2-3. and the pool halls i've been to don't buy boxes of those tips in bulk.

And who do you think you are assuming that he MUST have bought a box of 50?!!!!!!!!!!!!! Did he have a box sitting in the display case? The online price for a single tip at Pool Dawg is $1.95. See, you haven't given us all the FACTS yet. Plus, you didn't tell us where the shop was - i.e. in a town of 100 people or whatever. Was his shop the only one in town?

Not only in the pool industries, but in retail shops all over the US, things are marked up 300% a lot of times. It is called the law of supply and demand. And like others have said, he needs to make a profit. In business, of which you obviously have no experience, setting a price on something depends not only the turnover rate of the product, but also on the cost of capital and what it will take to get back your monitary outlay.

In addition, it is obvious, to me anyway, that you are still trying to be cheap, like you were with your no tipping attitude. If I recall you couldn't understand the salary make up of resturants, where some of the waitress cost is passed on to the consumer. Are you sure you aren't an illegal immigrant for God's sake? You can call me a dick, that's okay. I am just calling you out for what you are, which we all know even without saying it.

I have had a couple tips and a ferrule put on by Ted and Doug and they do a fine job. Of course I always ask that mine is the first one they do if they have others to do.

they're always trying to charge more than retail price for everything. i tried to hit up a local supply store for a new tip. they didn't have kamui so i asked about their moori's . they wanted like $35 bones for 1 not installed. then they wanted $4 for a triangle tip. the guy looked at me like i was a simpleton when i told him the prices were a little high.

and these store owners wonder why people shop online instead of locally

they are going broke, rent is killing brick and mortar stores in all sectors. the internet has changed the game. Dont worry they wont be there long.

Were still here.

My store is still going , it has its slow season , June, July, August...I'm in Flint , Michigan, this town is a ghosttown to what it was 20 years ago.......I'm still here and working everyday, may not have a steady flow of customers but I'm still there 6 days a week........I'm not a furniture store, just old school pool store, no pinball, no juke box, no bowling alley this is " Old Time Billiards " mister...........OTB:D

i'll respond to the bolded section of your post first. i saw the box of 50.

now i'd like to steal your line and say "who do you think you are assuming i assumed he bought a box of 50?????!!!!!?

the rest is all blah blah blah you trying to judge me because you don't like me and want to think those things of me and you can't stand being wrong

but that would be a huge dumb ass assumption on my part though right? assuming a billiard supply store would buy a box of 50 tips? and triangle tips at that? i mean what billiard supply store has a whole box of triangle tips on hand?????

The problem I see with not patronizing local stores is that they will go out of business, and you will no longer even have the option of getting "hands on" with a cue you are interested in.

You approach is good for allot of businesses, pool tho is different.
Consider, how ofter do your local billiard supply/retail/table sale outlets in your area support the local players?. In our city I can NOT remember a time in the past forty yrs where either of the two brick/mortar retail outlets ''ever'' showed support of any type for it's leagues/players and annual events. There demographic is over 95% homeowners, your logic is good, but on the backside, retail in our area, never supports the play side. Kinda sounds like the BCA actions in many ways, I know I worked for BCA when they moved here.

i buy most of my cues right here on az so that's not really an issue. that and i stick to production cues that i know i like...mezz, joss, schon. the custom cues i order to my specs so i only go to billiards supply stores for tips and small things

i htink i left this out so i'll throw it out there now. i found another billiards supply store about 4 blocks away from the first one i went to that had everything at reasonable prices. i picked up about 10 tips and i'll be going there form now on when i need something. they even let me know they're open to ordering things if i wanted somethings specific

I agree !!! I went to a local supply store here in Richardson, TX (Dallas area) and these fools wanted $490 for Simonis 860HR tourny blue, JUST FOR THE FELT !!!!

I bought it online for $255

Playa, I think it's only right that you post the name of that store for
AZers that live in your area.

Your post made me laugh. I can just imagine the sales guy slamming the box around.

I went to a local supply store a couple of weeks back looking for a white diamond tip. I asked the salesman if he had any......he walks behind the counter pulls out a box and slams it on the counter. He shows me the tip and I told him it wasn't a white diamond and asked what it was. He said the box says Made in China. That's all he knew. I asked to see his other kinds of tips and he pointed to the same box he pulled out and slammed on the counter. He only carried ONE tip!!!!

They just can't compete with online retailers any longer. People don't have to leave the house to get what they want and save gas money that way.....plus most of the time shipping is free.

He was slamming that box of tips on the counter because he didn't want to bich-slap himself because he knew he only had one tip and he wasn't going to make a sale since you obviously knew the difference between what he had and what you were looking for. :D
