There is no doubt that Barry has a long list of faults and I definitely wouldn't run the Open the same way he does. There are some very serious problems, not the least of which is paying the players on time. However, it is a great event and, although late, he always pays. He has been paying for 37 years. I don't think putting the Open out of business is the answer.
Honestly, if you are listing all of Barry's faults, you have to add that he tries to give players much better payouts than he should. The payouts are good and he pays deep. That is why the players continue to show up each year.
For those of you doing the math, remember that it is not just a matter of entry fees and added money going in and prize money going out. This is not a weekly tournament at your local room. There are a ton of expenses to be paid. I really doubt that Barry makes any money on the Open and, if he does, it probably isn't much more than minimum wage for the hours he puts in throughout the year.
Anyone who thinks they can get better sponsorship and run a better event, please step up and do it. It doesn't have to be the U.S. Open. You can call it anything you want and run it at any time of the year you want. Just stop b****ing here and do it. I will be the first to applaud your success, if it happens.
Again, there are many problems with the Open and they have to be fixed. I'll be the first to admit that. However, putting Barry out of business is not the answer. The Open is one of the biggest and best events in the country and I look forward to going again next year and many years to come.
