U.S. Open Checks Bounced???

This makes NO sense. They must be about $70k + short. If the added $$ is $60k then he is still $10k off.
Barry, sell the US Open to Griffin.

I agree, enough is enough, how can someone keep useing the same old excusses, if you cant make something happen(and its well proven that Barry cant with the us open)then give someone else a chance to, we all know we cant lose the Us open!

911 and the hurricane are the only passes he gets.

Aside from those 2 years, he has done everything in his power to butcher this tournament the past decade and absolutely everything that comes out of his mouth is a colossal turd.

A decade and he still can't get it right?!?!?
He's an idiot.

All those drugs and pieces of ass at his casino nights and US Open after parties fried up his brain.
A chimp from the local zoo could run this thing better than this guy.

And if Mark doesn't get possession of it, I think we know who would love to get it...

I like what you do Justin with the TAR matches. The players don't wait for checks to come in the mail. It's cash on the spot with the best in the world and that's why I am a repeat offender on buying the streams:grin: I'm not comparing your thing to anyone.....just sayin'

Personally, I wouldn't like to be handed 40K in cash to be put in my pocket, I'd much prefer other forms of payment. Plus when its over I think $600 the payee has to provide tax forms or something along that line. I know at the BCA event in Vegas at the Riv, this was the norm for large payouts.

Why would the international players keep playing if it so difficult for them to get paid? I mean five of the players effected by this are fillipino.

SUPERSTAR...Not to nitpick, or make excuses for BB, but...wasn't there just the biggest hurricane in US history? It started before the tournament ended, rained a hell of a lot in that area over the weekend, and had been talked about by the media for days prior to that...and it's not over yet! It no doubt affected the gate...not that it's any kind of excuse.

This is nitpicking.

All the money should have been in order BEFORE the tournament.
That way, it doesn't matter if 1 guy shows up, or 1000. Players get paid.
911 and the previous hurricane showed him not to bank on attendance anymore.

Have the money upfront for the prize fund, and pocket the gate.
Make a profit or take a loss, but stop stringing the players around by their balls already.

Barry has been doing this a log time and has built an event with great prestige. It really sucks that players are not getting paid and diminishes the title "US OPEN CHAMPION".

Great job or not, I think Barry should ask for help with this event or maybe partner with Mark and take the US Open on the road. I'm sure casino's would be interested in holding this event, even larger rooms would like this event.

This would open VIP to an entire new group and, from what I have seen, not rely on the same people travelling.

Each year alone would be a buzz seeing witch city will get the Open. New local fav to cheer, new backers, gamblers etc. Plus some cities would have much cheaper travel expenses.

Regardless of what happens, I hope the US Open servives.

if the salty shit in this thread isn't curbed and/or edited i doubt it'll survive

don't be the one who forces this thread down the crapper, with countless others

I never said anything about getting paid $40,000 in cash or about any other tournaments or payout formats. I just said I like what Justin does for pool and I love the TAR events. It's always a great show with the best of the best...That's all.......next:)

My take on this is this:

Barry Berhman is the US Open.

The shit this guy puts himself through to keep this thing running is simply nuts. No one else would do it. Mark sure wouldn't. No half sane business man would. The Open is Barry and Barry is the Open. I'm not saying its right I'm just saying its a fact. That means Barry does what Barry wants or thinks he can get away with and when things break he picks up the pieces when required or just brushes them aside as if it never happened.

If he gave the US Open name away tomorrow no one would put up $60,000+ added. You just can't out run that. As we so clearly see every fall in October.

I dont have an answer. I just know ones that wont work when I see them. Its a gift.

Perennial thread

This situation sends ripples through the rest of the game. Both the BCA and the WPA agreed to sanction the event on the basis of prize money levels. This in turn allows them to get a meaningful ranking points tariff.
So the event is sold on that basis. When things go pear shaped, the two bodies cannot rescind the points because the players would get punished for something that wasn't their fault.
This also applies to the Matchroom points. The strange thing was that even if Matchroom had struck off their points then the same team would have emerged.
SVB and MD couldn't be caught. DH didn't play, BS did but both had enough points to make it before MC points were added.
JA got a wildcard and played well in the Open. But he had performed sufficiently well in the previous wsek to still have got that spot.
Hypotheticals!

Curious what you are referring to specifically.

Maybe to survive just stop releasing amounts. just do % and open books. Pay all entry asap and a month to get sponsor monies etc paid. I think he does pay 100% even though it may take a month or two.

I wonder how much longer he can put himself out there just to carry on the tradition. Perhaps its time to have a pro only US 9 ball championship and scale everything back.

There is no doubt that Barry has a long list of faults and I definitely wouldn't run the Open the same way he does. There are some very serious problems, not the least of which is paying the players on time. However, it is a great event and, although late, he always pays. He has been paying for 37 years. I don't think putting the Open out of business is the answer.

Honestly, if you are listing all of Barry's faults, you have to add that he tries to give players much better payouts than he should. The payouts are good and he pays deep. That is why the players continue to show up each year.

For those of you doing the math, remember that it is not just a matter of entry fees and added money going in and prize money going out. This is not a weekly tournament at your local room. There are a ton of expenses to be paid. I really doubt that Barry makes any money on the Open and, if he does, it probably isn't much more than minimum wage for the hours he puts in throughout the year.

Anyone who thinks they can get better sponsorship and run a better event, please step up and do it. It doesn't have to be the U.S. Open. You can call it anything you want and run it at any time of the year you want. Just stop b****ing here and do it. I will be the first to applaud your success, if it happens.

Again, there are many problems with the Open and they have to be fixed. I'll be the first to admit that. However, putting Barry out of business is not the answer. The Open is one of the biggest and best events in the country and I look forward to going again next year and many years to come.

Does this change how the points for player rankings are scored?

Smirky Remark at the Open: Maybe Barry has a secret investor waiting to sell online gambling rights?

Business Quip: Next time I pay my rent, I am going to say I didn't make enough money and just let my landlord suck on that until she pays for an eviction.

Next Years US Open Headline: Stated prizes are dependent on weather conditions, ticket sales and how much debt I have to pay off.
