guy walks into my jewelry store,
him - i hear you are the guy that does pool cue repairs,
me - i can on some
him - i had this cue designed and custom made when i was in germany
me - lets take a look, [ gasp ] yea, i can put a tip on it

then he explains how his son lost all of the weights that were used, attached, so if you wanted to play with a heavy cue, or remove them if you felt like playing with a lite cue

Why be a hater...that's a sweet "custom"! LMAO

In some cases, as much as you want to, it's best to not say a word...I respect your constraint!

is that the original?

is that the original "hop, skip & jump" cue? One size fits all.

very valuable if not priceless

you have more self control than I do, of that, I am very sure.

You are a good man Chuck. I am amazed that you were able to resist trading him a used Rolex, or maybe it should have been a Polex watch for that cue.

I would have been on that one like white on rice.

Those Germans. Known for their technology. Cars, lathes, planes, etc. Cues, maybe not so much.

Tell him I have some of the very rare weights for this cue if he is interested. :D

Is that my cue? Why r u making fun of it? If u can't put on a tip for me that's fine just don't come on here and make fun of my cue. I would like it back. I will get someone else to put one on for me. Oh sorry. Mine has an orange bumper. Not mine.

I've heard that the orange bumper is very rare on these cues.
Any good right handed cue repair guy in your area should be able to screw-on a new tip>>

Good for you not saying anything! Never bite the hand that feeds you!!!

I know most of you know this already. And a few here that dont.
One mans junk is another mans treasure!
It doesnt matter where it come from, who made it or anything else as far as that goes.
This could very well be this mans prize jewel!
I get all kinds of cues to work on where im at. I have seen just about everything you could imagine.
I TREAT THEM ALL THE SAME.
I treat them all as if they are there prize jewel.
I get asked a lot (is this cue worth it)
My answer is always the same. You cant put a price on sentimental!!
So I am happy that you didnt say anything to him about his cue. Just makes you a better person for doing what you did.

Indeed.

But claiming one had a mass produced POS custom made in Germany is not simply sentimental. It's called lying.

I don't think anybody is bothered that the man might like the cue or feel sentimental about it. That would just be mean. It's that he obviously boastfully lied about the cue. You see, he KNOWS he is lying. Informing the guy of the truth wouldn't be so much bursting his bubble about what the cue really is as it would be catching a liar and embarrassing him. Get it?

I've been in this situation more times than I can count. I don't open my mouth unless they ask for a value. The hardest times for me are when someone pulls out a Meucci and tells me about the ivory collars or points. It breaks their heart when I have to tell them it is plastic. I can see the years worth of unintentional lies he told about that cue through his eyes...

You know I used to do the same w/baseball darts (huge wooden ones very cheap) and take out some rent with them. There are times even the owner has to be able to keep a straight face to make a situation work. However this time i'm sure he was sincere......if it were a ruse i've seen it work.

Hi,

I see these cues come in to my shop at the pool hall all the time and most of the time the story involves some history about it as a family heirloom.

If the shaft is straight I do the tip or ferrule whatever and keep my mouth shut.
If it is not straight, I explain that the 20.00 they are paying for the tip out weighs the cues value. The funny thing is that they some time have a tip put on anyway. Go figure.

Rick
