Might as well throw in 2 cents after finally seeing a semi-finished product for the first time...
The Good:
• Arena looks great, love the color changing lights.
• Graphics and video in general top notch.
• Commentary great, though I agree JJ far outshines his counterpart. The usual arrangement is to have an expert,
and then a sidekick who adds color. In this case the color guy is not very colorful at all,
so it's like an expert and someone who is just not as good.
• Nice job working in explanations of the rules with both the commentators and the popup graphics.
• Players and crowd show plenty of enthusiasm.
• Lee is great as a ref. All refs should have a british accent. And he seemed confident about the rules.
The players didn't have to stop and ask as much as they did in earlier matches.
• Uniforms, black pants, and black shoes help a lot to add to the professionalism.
• Few blunders. I know that's faint praise but a lot of pool streams come off as unprofessional because of obvious,
easily avoided mistakes... pronouncing names wrong, failing to update the score on the screen, etc.
• I like the idea of the shot clock keeping it moving and being able to strategically milk the clock.
The Bad:
• The match ran on too long to keep my interest. And I'm a nut who will watch pool for hours.
The main draw was to see a few of my favorites (Thorsten especially) play. I was a little bored
halfway through and if I didn't have the 60 ball run to look forward to near the end I'd have tuned out.
2.5 hours is just too long. 1.5 is more plausible.
• The girls are pretty but just don't have any use, and they aren't even trusted to do their job.
One spotted a ball before the CB stopped rolling and it almost interfered with the path of the ball.
Lee spotted balls in tricky situations.
I think instead of having 2 girls do one very minor task (and they can't be trusted to do 100% of that task)...
have one girl who comes in just to rack the balls on breaks. And let her sit instead of standing there
looking bored. Or skip the girls entirely.
• I love doubles but I feel there's a lot more competitive tension with 1v1.
Scott vs. Toasti had the most drama even though I already knew the outcome.
I know the mosconi cup format is very successful for them, but I really think the viewer will get more invested
if you have more 1v1 play.
• Nothing terrible but I agree that it'd be nice to instantly know what pockets are available to the shooter,
by having them glow. If it's not too distracting. Maybe even have them light up with the appropriate color of ball.
Then there's absolutely no need for the viewer to waste time wondering who's shooting what where.
The Ugly:
• "Those bonus balls girls work hard." "haha yup, no doubt, spottin' up them balls is hard work."
Wince. Just reinforces the fact that someone just shoehorned some tits into the arena for male viewers.
• Some of the sponsor patches look a little cheap like they were stuck on with safety pins, I noticed it especially
on Lee's shirt. It makes a difference if they're fully sewn on or better yet printed on the shirt.
It's a small thing but having the edges of the patch curling up off the shirts looks a bit like someone wearing
a clip-on tie with one corner sticking out over their collar.
• The white gloves on Lee stood out so much, I couldn't help thinking they looked like Mickey Mouse hands.
I don't mean to knock on Mr. Brett so much it's just he's on the camera a lot.
• The glowing lights seem to use 'faded purple' when someone is on the bonus ball, it's a bit confusing.
They need some way to represent black better. It's just too similar to the purple lights.
• I guess the top talent can handle them, but seeing those rattled balls on tiny pockets... yikes.
Overall though, there weren't a lot of misses that looked like anyone should have made the shot.
• Some players seemed rushed by the clock, and just 5 extra seconds would have helped without
permitting someone to just drag on forever.
• The look on scott's face when he realized beating toasti's score was shaping up to be mission impossible.
