Checks Not Cash At The Open

What are pool players supposed to do?

Just like in real life...the bottom feeders that play in the U.S. Open always get paid right away. Why should they care if the top paying pro doesn't get paid right away?

If I'm making $5 per hour at my job and I hear that someone else doing the same work who makes $100 per hour doesn't get paid...believe me, I will not feel bad about it.

Just keep feeding the rumors. Do you know who didn't get paid? I can tell you all the players I know from PA and Maryland got paid right away. So the top four players didn't get their full pay right away...I can tell you that a lot of other players do not care.

This is life and just the way it is. People will complain no matter what. I'm glad there is a U.S. Open.

I've never got paid for playing the lottery but I keep playing....

You've also never won the lottery.

:scratchhead:

You're right. Does that mean I should quit playing?

:thud:

Would you continue playing if you won the lottery and didn't get paid?

As Albert Einstein said: Insanity is doing the same thing over and over, expecting a different result.

It's difficult to argue with that logic, but let's look at it from the players' perspective. Let's say you are a top player and therefore that decent action is extremely tough to find, and if you find it, it will most likely be tough action. In such a situation the actual equation is this (even witbout considering the prestige of the title): "If I play in the Open I might not get paid, but if I don't play in the Open I most certainly will not be paid."

Trust me on this: when you don't know where your next dollars are coming from and you've dedicated much of your life to the game, not playing is not an attractive option.

They got paid.

It's Monday and they probably went to the bank.

Also, for those criticizing about the money, what part of "It's in Escrow" do you not understand. You can't lie about it being in escrow when there was an attorney and company present.

You cannot just walk in and withdraw out of an escrow account.

You are right.
p.s. Look at post number 54 in this thread. I guess no one cared to deal with the facts.

The facts are that the entry money and the added money was sent to me. I put it in my trust account and last Wednesday I wired it down to Johnny Archer's account in a bank across the street from the Open so that he could pay the players.

In case anyone hasn't said it, thank you very much for all your assistance in this matter.

I saw Johnny writing checks to the players several nights. Some people will just always find something to talk & complain about, I think everyone did a great job with it.

Scott: The ABP was not involved last year. In fact the WPA said last year they would pull their sanctioning if the ABP was involved. We saw how that worked out.

This year, the $50,000.00 added and most of the entry fees went into my account and then were sent down to the tournament site Wednesday into a new account opened up by Johnny. Barry and Shannon paid a lot of the early outs in cash, from some of the other entry fees and from the money Barry and Shannon ponied up for the early entries. The later larger prizes were paid from the account that had the escrowed monies.

it is worth keeping this quote on every page! everyone paid... checks good... on to the next negative thing to discuss...

I'm with you Jay

The short answer - NEVER!

After what I saw him do the 4 Japanese players in '07'
(not to mention his lying to me)
I had promised I'd never go back to another Open-

There is no title worth the continual blatant disrespect, lies, and stalls he perpetrates.

Barry being Barry is no longer an acceptable answer to my ears
and should not be acceptable for the players.

The fear of getting paid late or at all,
for your work in your profession should never be an issue.

He added insult to injury to me this year,

First he banned me from the arena-which is his prerogative to do.

However,
walking past me and saying I can't film anywhere in the hotel because "he" is under contract was more low than usual
but THEN
hunting for me around the hotel with security to have me booted was enough-
I have no more cheeks to turn-

Well... Of Course.... paying out 2500 in expenses and entry fees with the possibility of winning and not only not getting paid but not even getting back what you put out for a chance to win is an even LESS attractive option.

Jaden

Jaden...and that would be referring to players already here in the US. Those that travel from the Far East have much higher expenses...which is, of course, why they stayed away in droves.

you are mistaken-

Guys your talking about the prize money being paid this or that way. All the crap You all are talking about. First show up and support it or Kay in it. Barry has put this Tournament on 38 years. He has paid late in payments But has paid. 171 people showed up and plsyed . Did you? Let the tournament end the champion win and see. You all talk as if he's doing something to hurt the game. You just asked if he owns the open............ Another fool making a comment against the tournament that had been run 38 years by Barry and company. First where would you get the first Dollar or connection to put on this International Tournament. You all talk as if Barry is getting rich or robbing the funds. With "Any" support from the pool players that post on this Forum it could be a great success..... Just keep crying about the open you weren't even at. You'll get wish and one the last Tournaments left in the US that's not a local will be gone like all the others from lack Of Player support . No on has supported the game as Barry B has done and tried. I didn't notice any if you when I looked up from a pool table and I saw very few if you in the stands. O by the way the checks paid out so far have cashed............And when is your open event that added anywhere what Barry just did with 171 players.....oh yeah and played entry for past Champions.............O yeah I Expect you'll have hate messages back for this post but Barry B and family have given us a place to any for 38 years and counting

Please explain interrupting evening matches on Thursday
AS THE PLAYERS WERE PLAYING
to have Happy Birthday and 3 stanza's of America the Beautiful sung.
This should have been done prior to the events beginning.
Is a game stopped in the middle of play for the National Anthem.

While I feel your heart is in the right place,
all I spoke with were an array of disappointed, or upset.
After 38 years you should evolve an event, not de-volve it

There is no respect for the players from Barry Berhman,
it shows in word and deed.

they need to...

I concur with Buska95. All the *****ing and moaning but no actual support for Barry. You guys should be there and see how much he has tried this year to make things better for everyone. There will always be some glitches but Barry and Shannon are doing their best. It it wise to pay with checks. Cash payments only helps to avoid paying taxes due on winnings.

they need to do the best of someone better!
After 38 years, you'd thinnk you'd figure it out-

But this is the "Barry Show"
**** the players- It's me me me. I do it all.

I was there, I filmed the interviews- and they say it all...

I must add that as far as I know, everyone has always gotten paid eventually (and I'm not by any means attempting to minimize the grave seriousness of late payment). This also factors into the equation.

Lastly, lets be real. If it was all about logic, how many people would be playing pool professionally in the first place? Spock would agreee that part of the wondrous nature of humans lies in the fact that we are driven by more than just logic. :)

Angel, I totally understand why you're upset. If it happened to me, I'd be pissed off too. It was not right for him to ban you from the entire venue area, to include the hotel. That is totally ridiculous.

I wasn't there, so I'm not sure what transpired between the two of you. I know one thing, though, that if I traveled from Chicago to Norfolk, incurring all of the associated expenses, I would be totally upset; thus, I understand the reason for you posting your thoughts in this thread.

FWIW, I think you're a cool pool chick. Barry's loss of your presence and contributions is our gain. I look forward to seeing your documentary in all its glory. I admire you very much for what you're doing. :)
