Winning One Pocket

I thought Winning One Pocket was a great book , Shots Moves and Strategies, seemed like a book Raphael Martinez would understand, but not me.

Low price alert! There are two copies of Winning One Pocket available on Amazon for $149 right now. One of them has a spine problem but the other seems to be in good condition. It's been a long time since I saw one at that price.

That would be perfect for us older One Pocket players, Bob. Most of us have spine problems, too.

In 2005 I helped Eddie sell several boxes of his books from his home in
Las Vegas to a pool room owner from Portland, Oregon.

This included the last numbered set of the most rare
of the lizard skin W1P and SMS as well as the last of the leather bonded ones
that have the 6 signatures stamped on them from the co-authors.

Eddie will tell you himself that if you can only obtain one of the books he
had written, Shots, Moves, and Strategies is the one to obtain.

Also if you are looking for Winning One Pocket, Eddie would caution you
to find a 2d edition as the first edition was so screwed up in editing it had
to come with errata pages and everything still was not corrected - hence
the 2d edition.

jersey red went through a copy and made some comments then signed the book and gave it to me

all of this made it more valuable for me
Recently I asked San Jose Dick Mc Morran to add his comments and he sent me a copy of Shots ,moves etc with a few personal remarks that makes it special for me
the purpose of my remarks is to let you guys see a glimpse
into my thinking

to me the books are nice, but with personal remarks of the greatest players
i think they should be very valuable to others as well

i know I had some autographed pictures of some great players
and i was offered $1000 and I fell for the money, but looking back
i wish i still had those pictures of Red Ronnie and both Eddies

I turned down $2000 for my copy of the lizard back books

So I guess it might be hard to explain what makes them so great
if you don't see the value

They say there is more love in baseball than any game,we love our heroes, study their averages
pay thousands for mickeys baseball card ,
in pool there is not much talk of love, but some of us have strong feelings
for the game, the players, the cue makers, the cues, the tables, and yes even the books that give us a glance into yesterday

It seems like yesterday when I played with Ronnie,or Titanic or UJ or Eddie Taylor when he could barely see,
but he could still hit banks, i even remember asking Ed Kelly to sign a few pictures for me,

Campaign Eddie Kelly,he agreed but we had to get a dictionary to see how to spell champagne

I have some fond memories of the great players, and this Eddie Robins book brings some of the stories to life,I doubt I am the only one

here is why they are woth it
in my humble opinion
where else can you get the greatest minds (ie hall of famers)and players on one pocket
discuss their ideas about each shot

they are out of print so there are no more being made
you get inside the minds of champions at one pocket
it teaches not only shots but strategies and some systems too
if you are serious about one pocket and can afford the books they are a MUST HAVE
jmho

One thing to keep in mind... each of these shots teaches you a myriad of ideas. This library, along with what you already know is worth the price. Most One Pocket games in my area are $100 up. $300 for a book that might save you thousands is a worthy investment.

I sold my two books for $500.

Both books are worth reading, if not keeping as collectables.

They'll not only get you thinking about how to properly play 1pocket, they'll also show you that there is not just one way to go about it. The books will give your pool playing imagination a boost.

I have them both for sale, and the 3rd one too.

The Winning One Pocket is signed by all the contributing authors, all of whom are deceased, sadly so. Jack "Jersey Red" Breit, Ed "Champagne Eddie" Kelly, Grady "The Professor" Mathews, Leonard "Chicago Bugs" Rucker, Bill "Weenie Beenie" Staton, Eddie "Knoxville Bear" Taylor

Not quite. Both books are "out of print". That said, Eddie has cases of both books. He is not too well versed in how to sell them, and consequently makes little to no effort. That also helps drive up the price of other copies out there. This information came directly from one of my instructors, who is a very close friend of Eddies.

I was following these a lot up to about a year or two ago, so unless something new happened since then, this is what I understand the situation to be:

The first book, "Winning One Pocket", is out of print and no one has any new copies anywhere. It sells used on its own for about 200 to 300.

The second book, "Shots, Moves, and Strategies" is also out of print. But, Eddie Robbin has cases of them stored away from the original printing in the 90's. He routinely sells this book brand new (old stock) on eBay, under his own name, for about 100.

Of his three books, he has only SM&S now. See http://www.ebay.com/sch/billiardsmart/m.html?_ipg=48&_sop=10&_rdc=1 for his current listings.

There is a lot of additional info about the books with his auction listings.

My apologies...Bob is correct. I double-checked with my source, and he had told me there were some copies of WOP, but that was several years ago. I had it in my mind that it was recently. Sorry for the bad information, and apologies to iusedtoberich, as he had the correct info!

This is true. For anyone in the midwest, Lance Cowles, who posts here as Bossman69, is not only a very experienced 1P player (he's beaten some high profile pros at the DCC), but a great instructor as well. He has an amazing teaching facility with 2 9' Diamonds and 2 9' Brunswick tables. If you're looking to improve your 1P game, Lance is the man to help you. Lance lives in Battle Creek MI but travels to teach as well. He recently helped teach pool school in WI and MN.

still....as with any game...nothing beats playing an experienced player to learn the basics and some moves.

I am like several people on here, I had a chance to speak with Eddie on the phone one evening and he told me a wonderful story about George Rood, who was one of the best friends I ever had.
Eddie was as nice as you could want anyone to be.
I was walking around a pool tournament with several albums of pool player pictures I had taken and collected, when Buddy Halls book first came out.
He and Woody were set up and selling them right out of the boxes as fast as they could unpack them.
One of them asked me what I had and I showed him and then he showed it to the other one and they asked me to sit with them and they looked thru them for a couple of hours and we talked and reminisced about the ones from our era.
They also seemed excited to see some of the pictures of the old players from our history.
It was one of the best days of my pool life, to be able to spend time with those guys.
I bought a book and they both signed it and made it personal.
That is one of the few things I will never sell.
The reason the prices of the books is what it is , is very simple, supply and demand.
There are more people who want the book than there are books, so the price keeps going up until everyone that wants one and can afford to keep it, has one.
