New MC cup captain team USA

Both new captain & co captain picks were wrong. They aren't changing though.

The Co-Captain pick strikes me as a form of damage control performed quickly by Matchroom after the initial backlash from the Johann pick.

I might be wrong but if they had gotten nothing but glowing support and praise on picking Johann to catain the USA Johnny would not have suddenly become co-captain.

If i were Johnny I would feel pretty off about this, he is going to look like the token American cheerleader and second/vice captain to most viewers. He is there to put some "American" in the coaching staff after a very short sighted initial pick by matchroom that was "probably" meant to be the only coach when it was initially announced.

It takes a lot to screw something like the MC up, but they managed to do it. Johnnyt

For once, I agree with you.

I really enjoy watching the Mosconi. I get emotionally invested in it and naturally want the US to do well and win. As of right now, I just cant see myself enjoying it as much.

Of course I will still watch it but I feel like I wont "care as much" about the outcome.

For me, this is the Mosconi Cup jumping the shark :)

who here thinks the Euros would like it if an American captain was assigned to their team?

best,

Five top Americans players against five top European players in front of a big crowd with great production values. I'm going to watch and I don't really care who the coaches are. Rather, I'll care a lot if the coach can help the team perform better, period. If a guru from the Himalayans could be the coach and impart inner peace that helps the Americans play at their top speed, then bring him on. Same goes for a coach from Europe. Team USA has little to lose from their current position, after all.

It seems like a lot of people have "I'm not going to watch" messages pre-typed and are just waiting to hit "Submit Reply" as soon as something irks them in the least. Mike's on the team? I'm not watching. Mike's not on the team? I'm not watching? No Ernesto? I'm not watching. Diliberto commenting? I'm not watching. Break box? I'm not watching. Racking template? We didn't have those when I learned and we had to walk uphill in the snow to and from the pool hall while fighting off rabid dogs, I'm not watching. Sheesh.

Even though I'm a Johan fan and can somewhat understand why Hearn would do this....I have to admit I'm not pleased. I believe Johan has a lot of qualities that a US captain (like Mark Wilson), should try to emulate. However, nothing about this appointment feels right. I don't want to pass judgement too soon, but this might have been the move that puts the final nail in the MC coffin.

Now, now. Those who disapprove of the Archer pick still respect that he is one of the all-time greats and that he has been a mover and shaker in our sport for a long time. Those credentials, however, don't make him the right choice at this time for assistant captain. My preference is to assume that Matchroom forced this upon Johann, for if I'm wrong, then Johann's first significant decision as Coach of Team USA is a bust.

I would say with some certainty that this was a move made by Johann, before clearing it with Matchroom. It might have been done to appease the growing number of critics of his appointment. Or maybe he does not feel able to fully understand the psyche of the US players
He is using JA as a crutch. The co-captain has not appeared in a MR event since the disastrous shenanigans at the 2013 MC.
Johan would be a success in any other country in the world. But I don't think his doctrine will penetrate the American skull. I think that the most that the US team can hope for is to win five games

Yeah?? Well this yr we will possibly have a Thorpe  $100 says we win 6.

Managers and captains get way too much credit when things go well, and take way too much heat when things go bad.

Who cares about this crap, it hardly matters. USA will either want to show up and win, or they won't. My personal guess is that if the victors got like a million bucks each and the losers nothing, it would be a dead heat every year. But as it stands nobody cares except Europe. I'm sorry but I just don't think the USA players care, why would they. Why in the world would they. Theres a big difference between thinking you care and actually caring. There's guys who should be on the team that can't even bother to play, that says it all.

Match room says the captain picks all five from the top 10. Is there something else?

I'm with you Cory. People saying they aren't going to watch. Lol It is one of the most watched events in pool. And American's watch it on ESPN3 FOR FREE. Now if Europeans start saying they aren't going to watch because Johan is a traitor or some other nonsense, well maybe Matchroom Sport will take notice.

I think we need the Dali Lama to go on a serious fast for us to win this.

I'm going to watch it regardless of who is playing or coaching and I will pull for AMERICANS to win as always. Not so secretly, I hope Johan proves all of the naysayers wrong.

Yes but ........let's all relish that one beautiful thought for just a moment or two...
The yin and yang of it all.

Many players trying to get into the "top ten" per say....

And then once they make it....

5 have a target on their back.

I must admit that I'm a little aroused in a James Bond sort of way.

Did I mention no bar boxes and no U.S. Open for points?

JA as USA assistant coach is another bad call by MR. They are making a mess of this. What are they thinking?

I might watch (maybe) but I'm going to pretend like I didn't.;)

Like Joey A. said in another post....skin in the game. Changing the money payout for winners and losers is at the core of thinking for the US players. Give the losers a couple thousand +travel/room/airfare and give the winners all the Cash. It's been said before by myself and others....the payday for being on the losing team, is greater than almost all the events, cept the US Open and DCC and??? They need a dog in this hunt and this is a bone, few American players wanna mi$$ since $7,500? is guaranteed. Make it 30K apiece for the winners and $1,000 each for the losers, that'll make the needed change in attitudes for this venue. 30K is a number that can change life for many a player. During the depression era, much like life in a Pinoy pool room, playing to eat and keep a roof over your head, brings out quite a different player than if they are already guaranteed Fat just by showing up. Personally, I'd give the winners all, and the losers get....room/board/meals/airfare and $500 each.

My picks would have been: Czar,er,Captain: Jay H., Assist.Capt: J.Archer, ViceCapt.(psychological warfare) E. Strickland.

I'd prefer a retired pro tennis coach, or a retired college BB coach, or something along those lines to work with JA or whomever his assistant may be. Real coaches, have the known skills to motivate and organize such a task. Just because your a great at your sport, in no way gives one the skills to implement such an endeavor. Hell Larry Bird was not able to become a coach, it takes a special person to fill those shoes, time proved that. Many great BB players tried to coach, tried and eventually found out, it's not in their DNA. Our players need someone too look up to.
Only problem I saw with Mark Wilson was the mindset of our players....which is....If I can draw my ball better than you, then I'm not going to listen or follow thru with what said....because your not as good as me....waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.

AHHHH! Motivation....Mindset. Attitude HENCE the need for a sports psychologist of known repute in that area. Can't argue with you about some players attitude mentioned below. Unfortunately for them, it is one of the things holding them back.
