I just watched the documentary and the video of last racks and cannot quite get my head around this.
The video is 20 minutes long and covers the continuous footage of 6 racks (including the last rack where Earl missed a cross-corner on the one thus ending his 11-rack run). Therefore, these must be racks 7-12.
The video does not show who racked the balls in the game #7 (one can just see Earl breaking the balls and hear the crowd exploding at the 9 going on the break and someone saying this is the fourth game in the match, and a second game in a row, that the 9 found a pocket on the break).
Then one can clearly see Earl racking for himself (after ignoring Jay's warning that he cannot do that) in the game #8 and sinking the 9 on the break).
Game #9. Jay racks the balls. Earl pots three balls on the break and proceeds to run out.
Game #10. Jay really gives a lot of time and attention to the rack. Earl sinks two balls on the break and ends up with a thin cut on the one in the side (which would result in hitting the two with no guaranteed position) or a difficult cut-back 1-9 combo to the corner. Earl opts for the latter and makes the combo!
A celebration follows. When everyone regains their senses, Earl comes back to the table for the rack #11. The video does not show who racked the balls in that game but I assume it was Jay as Earl was busy celebrating what was (and still is) an incredible feat. Based on his demeanor, Earl did not seem to realise that he needed that rack to be able to cash in $1m. Three balls go down on the break and Earl runs an easy rack for the cash!
So it looks like Jay has taken over racking the balls in the game #9 only (given that Jay was adamant in an interview that Earl never made the 9 on the break when he was racking which would rule out racks 6 and 7). This would have violated the terms of the insurance contract requiring an independent racker for the last 5 games of the run. Surely, all of the 13 lawyers representing the insurer would not have overlooked this, would they ? I must be missing something, just not quite sure what it is...
Reviewing other threads on the topic does not seem to shed any further light on this so maybe this is the one for CJ to clarify if he has time and desire to do so.
NB. Earl did pot the 9 on the break 5 times in the first 8 racks when he allegedly was racking for himself. No wonder the insurer got sceptical about this achievement
