Dumbest tournament rule ever???

So what happens if two 400-pound guys need to lag and they can't move the balls over closer to the side rails?
They could do the Mighty X and if they time it just right the balls will return to their starting sides.

And that will also ensure that they lag at the same time. (y):geek:

Robbie Capito - link here

According to him, he "experienced a severe stomachache" and then "sought permission from both my opponent and the referee and they both agreed to the break" and somehow he still got penalized. What a shit show.
Shocking. Ref errors are piling up and not looking good for EPBF after taking over refereeing for Predator events this year. Refs not properly trained by EPBF or are inexperienced clueless or should not be refereeing

It's also IMO the difference between Europeans and Americans. The former are very strict for rules. The latter don't sweat the small stuff.

How about that break rule, what if someone has a weak sauce break and not enough balls come up table…even tho they try and hammer them. Granted most you see on stream tables can break but a slight miscue could happen and the balls don’t scatter.

And what was the new rules for the DCC one pocket, after a certain length of time all balls up table spot or was it you get ball in hand? Not sayin these are the dumbest…just sayin they’re rules that seem like they can take away from the game itself.

There was a top player around here who used to teach students to lag after their opponent's ball was part way back from the far rail so they would know the right speed to play. I wonder what happened when two of those students lagged against each other.
Kim Davenport said he actually did do the late lag
Also said he didn’t lose many lags .
Like to hear his take on this ; )

I was watching a stream (Las Vegas 10-ball). Skyler Woodward was playing fellow American Payne McBride.

They lag. Sky wins easily. The referee told Sky he forfeited the lag because his cue ball hit the top rail before McBride's did. A discussion between Sky and the ref ensued.

The ref eventually goes and gets what I suppose was the head referee (he had a referee's shirt on), and a discussion between he and Sky ensues.

We never really get the gist of what the discussion/rule was about, but from what I could gather the original referee was saying that Sky's lag couldn't hit the top rail before the opponent hits his ball. After a brief discussion, they were allowed to re-lag, again with Sky winning.

So, am I missing something here? If it is against the rules for a lagger's ball to hit the top rail before the other lagger strokes his ball, therefore causing a rules violation and immediate loss of lag, wouldn't it be advantageous for a lagger to not even strike his ball until the other lagger's ball has hit the top rail?

What an ingenuous way to win every lag, right? Dumbest rule ever!!

Hopefully after this fiasco it was discussed and fixed.

Again, am I missing something here?

Yes there is a rule where you can't wait too long to lag with your opponent as you can judge how their speed was and hit yours to possibly do better.

The lag has a few rules that many people are not aware of, I end up explaining them to league players, etc... quite often.

And the circus continues. Player makes the 10 on the break. Ref spots it up and then picks up the cueball and start cleaning it as-if a foul occurred (one didn’t).

And then when he re-placed the cue, he placed it frozen to the rail. It was not frozen before he picked it up.

i liked that guy. he fugged up then went to the commentary booth, said the f-word in the mic and that he was harry from ohio.

harry from ohio, i salute you.

Just another dumb rule in play here. Thank you Matchroom for everything you’re doing!
And Race to 4 , race to 4 then spot shots ……….. WOW 🤩 what’s this world coming to !!! APA handicapped , Fargo Rate , A and B side of tournaments instead of losers and winners side …… Maybe I’m getting old and grumpy at 53 but dang , let’s just flip a coin and play some races 💯

I thought they were all European refs...

The look on Carlo Biado's face when the dude checked to see if the 10 ball was frozen to the rail as Carlo was down on his shot for the 10 ball.

Harry from Ohio had a rough day, lol.

They did change the shootout format at least. They play a third set to determine the winner, it goes to a shootout if its hill/hill in the third set.

Why was the ref calling Sky on it? It was Payne that lagged late. Someone has to lag first, then the opponent has to shoot their ball before the other ball reaches the opposite end rail. It has been this way for as long as I can remember. Is lagger a word?
Laggard lagger lagging laggardly is what you're looking for.

The ref either didn't know or misinterpreted the rule. You can't wait and watch your opponents lag before lagging yourself. That is why you must lag before their ball hits the end rail. If you fail to do that then you lose the lag. We had a pro player who used to watch his opponents lag until it came off the end rail, and when he saw the speed he would then lag. I watched and warned him a couple of times and finally called a foul (loss of lag) on him for doing it. I never saw him do it again. Not a big name player, just an angle shooter who will remain nameless for now. He's still around somewhere I believe.
If they were using WPA rules, you do not lose the lag, it is a re-lag. Rule 1.2
The players will lag again if:
(a) a player’s ball is struck after the other ball has touched the foot cushion;

I do think the rule should be changed to read that you lose though.

Back in the day (1970's to 1990's) most of the pro tournaments held in the USA did not adhere to WPA rules precisely. Each promoter could make their own rules and often did. Only for World Championships and BCA league play was the WPA rule book adhered to. Plus some overseas events.

that was a different match, unless it happened twice. it was the bald big guy, not harry from ohio, iirc

Does seem kinda silly, maybe not dumb...
I thought the dumbest thing in this tourney was a TV table ref not knowing it was winner break an allowing players to alternate break... furthermore the streamers talking about it and not calling it to attention. Reminds me of employee's watching other employee's do something wrong and not saying Sh!te about it, the "oh, not my job not my problem" mentality... UH you're both fired, have a nice a day!

... I do think the rule should be changed to read that you lose though. [if you lag late]
Then you might have players one-stroking the lag before their opponent's bridge was set.

I have seen carom refs do a "Ready? Lag," routine.

Lagging didn't used to be so complicated.

The commentators were doing it remotely from NYC and the Netherlands. They did mention the goof on the stream. Whether they tried to contact officials at the event, I do not know.

Ah, perhaps there's a glimmer of hope yet... ;)
