5 Tables for a Big Tourney?

5 tables

If you can be a bull dog for 3 or 4 days, ,stay focused on your purpose and the Pro card had a lot of meaning to you.
There would be a great chance in a tournament like this, that a lot of people who play better than you ,get tired or frustrated and you could go farther than in a normal setup.
Possibly getting one of the cards.
Other than that I think it would be horrible.

I agree, but they use to do it on the Hunter Tour at Fast Eddies, did they not? Or am I turned around somewhere here?

This is the Regional Tour Championship - players from all over U.S. will be coming to play. On a personal note I've only played on 8 ' table once around 2006... I'm pretty sure many players out side of TX haven't played on 8' tables either. This would definitely give home court advantage to TX players and I can't honestly say I like that... I'm know I'm supposed to be able to adjust, but don't want added complication. We played a whole year of Regional Tour to qualify & earn for this opportunity!

Plus, there are 29 WPBA Pros also invited who did not cut the 40 exemption list - so that doubles the pressure even more:frown:

What is on the line is top 8 will earn a Pro Card to play the whole year of WPBA Tour - not just one qualifying spot. I'm not asking for it to be handed to me but yes I want a fair chance.

Bottom line - It's great that this is happening but can there be something done soo it will be fair to the players and possible?

Iirc, a couple of those gc's at bogeys are tight and play kind of tough. That won't help the speed of play either.....

There are a few things that bother me about this whole thing:

1) A pool room with 4-5x the number of 9fts expressed interest in holding the event...

2) Basing an entire year's status on one tournament weekend is a little bit of a stretch...especially when the schedule is going to be INSANE...

3) ...I'll save the rest for later

That being said, I am happy they decided to do the right thing and not short change the regional and non exempt players by having an RTC. However, given any situation, I will find something to complain about...

You are correct. :) The regional tours can play on 8 or 9 foot tables, including when they held qualifiers. However, all State Championships, the RTC, and WPBA Amateur Nationals have to be played on 9 foots, per WPBA rules.

Which I am fine with.

I am not bashing Bogies, either, FTR. I just don't know what I should do about this now that I hear we would be playing on 5 9-foot tables with so many players.

You might need to take a couple weeks of vacation time for that one.But seriously if the TD intends to put 90+ players on 5 tables they might as well only have half the players how up the first day and the other half the second day.

Congrats Trig!

Besides being in total agreement with everyone that the math is bad (= r-e-a-l s-l-o-w) for this upcoming tourney; I wanted to say congratulations to Trig on her 6000th post. :thumbup2:

And if you do decide to attend, best of luck to you.

Best,
Brian kc

Holy Crap! 6000?:grin::eek::grin: Wow... similar congrats.

And I'll echo KC regarding the good luck wishes to Trig and Ashley and all the other participants. Do keep us posted here as to how it's going, ladies. I believe you'll have adequate time in your schedule....:p

That would save me some vacation time if I was one of the ones who could show up Friday. ;)

BTW - thanks for all the comments. I am leaning toward not going at this point... :(

If you can take the time off, why not go. It is a chance to earn a WPBA tour card. Those chances don't come around every day.

Take a shot at it. Just bring lots of down time materials so that you do not become pre-occupied with the waiting. The waiting is going to bother a large number of the players so you may actually be able to use it to your advantage if you are mentally ready to do so.

I really hope you decide to go. It would be amazing to see you on the WPBA tour next year.

Has there been any word on whether or not the first round would be pre-scheduled so folks wouldn't have to be there for days before playing?

That might make it easier, if you were to know that your first match was scheduled for such-and-such a time, and to be there 2 hours earlier in the event of rescheduling due to no-shows.

They might not want the place completely full of folks just spinning their wheels anyway...

I echo LeagueGuy's hopes that you come up with a way to participate, Trig. I think I understand how frustrating it's gotta be for ya.

And chicks already play slow. So, 9 foot, race to 9... O M G!

This is your biggest problem IMHO....

Trigger, keep the faith, I'm a big believer that anything can happen.....honestly, I do think it is something you can pull off, but you have to set yourself up for success....

Here are a few keys....

First, do your math....you have 4 days, 5 tables, and 90 players....draw out your brackets, set matches for every hour and a half.....if you can finish on time, then you know it's possible and move on to step 2...

Second, shot clock.....with 5 tables, time is your challenge.....set up expectations early - 30 second shot clock with one extension per rack......Hu has previously provided an easy fix - use a chess clock or other timer, set if for 30, the player leaving the table punches the clock when they sit....if the professionals can do it on TV, so can your group and set expectations at the players meeting....

Third, with that few tables, post your match times on the brackets....since players might have to sit for 4 hours, this will give them a chance to leave and rest.....also, make sure you have 5 open 8 footers for practice so they warm up there - when their time starts, play begins....

Fourth, organization - if you are very organized, post the match times, and hold everyone accountable, it might go off a lot better than you expect....

Good luck....if you can do it on paper, you can make it happen....break out the brackets, do matches every hour and half, and see if it works....tell players they should be ready to play 30 minutes before their time - if a table is open, you will send them out of up 30 min early ;-)

I am leaning toward not going at this point... :(

My head hurts, so my math might be off

5 tables x 18 hours (10am-2am) x 4 days at 1.5 hours a match = 60 matches a day....seems very doable....with double elim and 90 players, I would think you can finish in 240 matches, but I have been wrong before and often

Thanks for trying B. Perm and I know you already gave yourself a head ache, but can you do over?

It's not completely even 4 days. Player's meeting is at 4 pm Thursday and matches will begin immediately after... So, we've lost about 7-8 playing hours...

If I'm not mistaken, depending on if the finals is true double or one extended race, a 90 person double-elim tournament will take 169-170 matches.
