We have had many threads on the greatest pool player and pretty much have been all over the board. So I got to thinking in all of history in any sport, game, music, art, military, medicine, etc. has there ever been the greatest of all time in one category that is beyond question? That nobody ever debates about.

Sure, many. Well, several at least.

Recent example could be Usain Bolt, tough to argue against him being the greatest 100 and 200 meter runner ever.

King Chaka Zulu ,he had no equal when it came to putting people on a stick like a Popsicle.

Wasn't he a sniper in the Viet Nam war?

Yes....he is also credited with the first 1000yrd + kill I believe, and to make it even more notable.....the shot was made with an old water cooled browning 50 that carlos modified himself. I think all this is verifiable truth, but I am speaking from memory. He also had the highest bounty on his head ever posted by the NVA.......Dan

Ok i did some research.....the shot was 2500 ft and it was made with a M-2 browning 50 that carlos mounted a scope on......Dan.....BTW this was a record distance for a confirmed kill at this time and stood for quite awhile untill bested by some canadian......Ehhhh......Dan

Wayne Gretzky, the hockey player

Antonio Stradavari, the violin maker

Al Oerter, discus thrower

William Shakespeare, playwright

Laurence Olivier, Shakespearean actor

Euclid, geometry mathematician

Pele, soccer

Of these, I think Al Oerter, gold medalist in four consecutive Olympic Games, rates highest. His is among the least breakable records in sports.

Kelly Johnson, father of the greatest non-space aircraft and one of the most revolutionary technological achievements in history, the SR-71.

Michael Jordan.

Eventually,Rafael Nadal.

Tough one to argue

Lance Armstrong, the man was as dominant as a professional athlete can be. It had to be a pretty tough pill to swallow riding in the tour de France knowing the best you could do was finish second.

Greatest Tour de France rider, perhaps.

Greatest cyclist ever? Absolutely not. In fact, I was going to mention Eddy Merckx as the nearly unanimous pick as the greatest cyclist ever. I've never seen a poll that did not have him at number one.

Carlos " White Feather" Hathcock

Thats interesting. I used to do a lot of reading on Viet Nam. If I'm not mistaken, there is a book on him. Kind of a loner, used to go out hunting in the jungle at night etc. I'll have to check my book stash.

The part about putting a scope on his rifle reminded me of it.
