ABP boycotts Berhman's event

Playing poker in the hallways.. .drinking booze in plastic cups and no ice.
Yeah... 2003 Isabel.

Eric, 2003 was Isabel. I remember Saturday night playing until 3 and 4 a.m. because of the blackout previous days. Then the semifinals had to begin at 12 noon on Sunday. All the beer stands were closed. Why do I remember that so well?! :embarrassed2:

Because of the very low turnout from the spectators, Barry had to cut the added and paid only part of the guaranteed $$$.. this caused a players meeting in the area where the brackets and practice table was held. I was there. I am pretty sure it was 2001.. but I will defer to the majority.

No doubt. Charlie and Max Eberle were the first leaders of the UPA charge.

I'm just trying to remember which year that was the UPA vs US Open. I'm fairly certain it was 2002 or 2003.

Eric >certain, as in I could be wrong

Yeah... 2003 Isabel.

Ain't that the truth. I remember Rodney Morris opening the side door to the Holiday Inn while the Tropical Storm Isabel was in full motion. I thought he was going to get blown away.

Then there was those little sticks they gave all the Holiday Inn guests when the power went out. We were staying at the Holiday Inn, and at one point, we were the only ones with power.

Then Barry found *and* rented a generator to get the Conference Center up and running, so the tournament would continue. Barry Behrman saved the day.

There Dave Howard holding that little stick thingie that lights up in the dark. :embarrassed2:

Yep, you got me, lol.

Well, the first thing to go is the memory and...

I'm trying to remember the second thing.

Eric >has beer, will travel

Not sure about that. I had the opportunity to play/attend for the first time last year and was impressed by the spectator turnout. By Thursday the stands were completely full and guessing at least 500 and probably more. Not great compared to other sports, but the place was packed and it was cool to see that for a pool tournament.

I am glad you had a wonderful experience, hope you get to do it again.
the open is a top tournament with a 256 field.300 to 500 a day won't get it done.2000 to 5000 a day is what it will take to push pool forward.

Charlie, Max, and the very nice-looking guy from Arizona, whose name escapes me.

I'm right there with you on the memory. I've been needing to do a defrag on my brain for a while now! :p

Maybe it's 'cause I'm on the East Coast, but there's no better feeling than seeing those blue skies and feeling that warm ocean breeze blow through your hair while standing outside in front of the Chesapeake Conference Center.

I've enjoyed some of my best conversations right there, gazing at all the players and pool peeps coming and going.

I'll play a $100 bet with anyone on the GAL that someone on that list will end up playing in the event.

I would laugh until the end of my days if Archer himself snuck into the thing at the last second under all those players noses and won another USOpen. That would never, ever not get a chuckle from me.

It's about time that the men's professional level players are finally at least attempting to stand up and fight back! Behrman's absolute disrespect of the players and failure to pay winners in a timely manner...YA KNOW IMMEDIATELY, is absolute crap! The ABP is for the players and ran by them as well and I hope they hold strong and come out with an organization that will demand the respect they deserve! Way to go ABP!!!

Guess you weren't around the other times the pool players tried to organize and you didn't see the damage they did to themselves. As an old friend of mine has said often over the years, as long as they are trying to do it themselves, they're doomed to repeat. Too much greed and me, me, me.

Thanks and it was a great experience. I understand that the current economic model doesn't work. Getting 2000 to 5000 people to watch a pool tournament probably isn't going to happen. Barry is an optimist and only if the tournament runs perfectly with no hitches and the attendance is very good will he make a small profit or break even. He is counting on the gate to help him make expenses which has bit him in the *** in the past.

The tournament should be tweaked with shortening the duration, less added money, guaranteed payoffs, different payoff structure, etc to make it a feasible economic venture.

The problem is that the players may be effectively killing the longest running tournament in a tough economic environment, instead of working with the promoters to have great events. This just isn't going to end well for anyone. The players, the industry, independent promoters, fans, etc.

It seems like this press release should only have posted and become public knowledge at the 11th hour, when every other option was exhausted between the players and the promoter.

In an industry on life support, something like this may simply be the final stroke that kills the patient - pun intended.

The players are NOT the only ones who didn't get paid !!!

I noticed the Pearl wasnt on that list....

I wonder how many amature playes are going to step up and deliver this year.

This whole thing is kinda sad because I'm gonna be there, and I'mma gonna shoot my best. I will also probally lose. In the end I would rather lose to a Strickland, or Reyes, or Archer. It makes for a better story later on.

First off, I would have to say I agree with Inside_english, no one should slam Berry....except if there are actually still players that are unpaid from last year or any year, period. I'm sure we will all hear from him soon enough. NO-ONE wants to put in ALL THE EFFORT it takes to run something of that size!! But, Barry has time and time again.....
I think this is a way the pro players are trying to get Barry to open his eyes and say to himself, WOW I should do something quick!!! He really has so much in stake. If nothing is done by Barry then, this is perfect time for several MAJOR SPONSORS to step up to the plate and keep this great sport going!! Maybe, Diamond, Aurora road billiard supply, Cue & Case, Ozone, etc.....that is just a couple of supply companys. Imagine if that actually happened? The US-OPEN would be huge!!! I think thats what should happen.....WHY???? Because they are all the BIG companys that EVERYONE is buying from!!! Why should it be just Barry and a couple of companys? I know that there are already some BIG companys helping now but, that's obviously NOT ENOUGH!! Come on BIG COMPANYS!! Help out here... it for you in the long run anyway??

What do you think?

I think your opinion of what constitutes a big company and it's resources are somewhat out of whack with reality in the current economic climate.

I may be naïve but it is worth a shot. Why not pre-sell live internet coverage to insure the gate. Let the fans support the event if they want to see pro pool grow. I would pay $100.00 for a week’s worth of coverage with two or three user selected matches over any given set.

The last time I went to the US Open I enjoyed sitting behind a couple of pro players one day but had to watch the finals from the nose bleed seats on the TV monitor at the end of the room. I decided right then that it was my last US Open. See it better a year later on DVD.

Seems to me that someone could pre-sell DVDs and live streaming to raise money to support the event. 5k fans at $100.00 is some reasonable support and the costs go down with less need for an arena. Hell it could be played out of his pool room with $1,000.00 admission for those who want live coverage on site.

I am of the opinion that pool does not lend itself well to convention centers. It does display well on the internet. As far as I am concerned DVDs and live streaming can include ads that support the sport. I would even be more inclined to buy from commercial vendors who included their infomercial on the DVD / stream.

Someone needs to get a little creative here.

If players, as part of their admission to the event, had to agreee to put on a demo, engage in an interview, and possibly include tips on the stream and DVDs every one could be encouraged to get involved and help support the sport.

Starting their own tour would ruin them. That's like saying the Textile Worker's Union should start their own shirt factory. If they become involved in running a tour then there purpose becomes to have the tour make money instead of protecting the players. They're doing the right thing be a union. Members of a union have to lose money temporarily in order to gain leverage, it is the only way it can work.

Then eventually the union prices themselves out of the global market, refuses to compromise, and leads to the downfall of an entire sector of the economy such as took place in the US auto industry.

Unions had a place in 1850 Europe when kids were used to load explosive charges in mines and people were worked into virtual slavery by company stores. These days with the current employee protection in place in government unions tend to be a negative influence for employees, the economy, government, pretty much everyone but the union leaders.

Correct me if I am wrong but even though mr. Berhman has been late in paying out in the us open. Hasn't he fulfilled his obligations to paying these players he owed money to? All these players that say they are boycotting this event don't realize what Mr. Berhman is trying to do for this game even through the horrible downfall in the US economy he is doing the very best he can! So all you ABP players should be embarrassed of yourself for skipping this event an to me just shows the true colors of how some professional pool players are an I use the word professional very loosely. I hope the us open is not tainted with lack of players an hope this so called professionals come to there senses
