ABP Pro Players Not Attending the 2011 US Open 9-Ball Championship
From ABP General Attorney Dennis Walsh

Chicago, Illinois- It is with regret that the general professional body of the Association of Billiard Professionals will not be attending the 2011 US Open 9-Ball Championship promoted by Mr.Barry Behrman. Nor will these ABP pros attend the Masters 10-Ball or any event promoted by Mr.Behrman because of monies owed to players and lack of secure funds of prize money before each of his events.

One of the goals of the Association of Billiards Professionals is to provide a platform where touring professionals can pursue the sport they love as a full time career and achieve reasonable financial success. To that end discussions have been ongoing since last year with representatives of the US Open and representatives of the ABP.

Repeated attempts by the ABP organization to obtain guarantees that the prize money will be in place have been refused and therefore it is with regret that the Association and its members have decided to neither support nor attend the 2011 US Open 9-Ball Championship. Notwithstanding the Association’s deep respect for Barry Behrman for his contribution to pool these many years, the players simply cannot commit their time and their expenses for an uncertain payday.

"As a former US Open 9-Ball champion, it's painful to not be able to attend this year, as it is always great to play in it. However, the ABP and its goals are more important than my personal goals, and we need to start taking the necessary steps to pave the way for the future of the game and its up and coming stars."- Rodney Morris, ABP Board of Directors

"It is with sadness that I must withdraw from one of my favourite tournaments ever. In doing so, I hope the sacrifices we are making raises the standard of the elements that our beautiful sport lacks. The ABP's goals are to the benefit of the sport and to restore the confidence of cooperation between players, associations and promoters alike. I stand behind this vision fully. " - Mika Immonen, ABP Board of Directors and Two time US Open 9-Ball Champion.

"The US Open is the greatest and most prestigious event on American soil. I am truly sorry we cannot attend this event. But we have an obligation to protect all players now and in the future. I am hopeful in the future all things will be worked out so all players can participate in all great and safe tournaments." - Johnny Archer, President of the ABP.

Well, I guess if there were ever a time that I might be able to win a US Open, this is it.

Best,
Brian kc

You'll have to get through me first :)

I just have to remember not to leave you a kick Brian :)

Looks like the ladies may have the odds in their favor this year.

About time!

It's about time that the men's professional level players are finally at least attempting to stand up and fight back! Behrman's absolute disrespect of the players and failure to pay winners in a timely manner...YA KNOW IMMEDIATELY, is absolute crap! The ABP is for the players and ran by them as well and I hope they hold strong and come out with an organization that will demand the respect they deserve! Way to go ABP!!!

This has a familiar sound to it... same sounds as the org that started in 2003.

What does the ABP have to guarantee the US Open 9 Ball event?

The ABP says; One of the goals of the Association of Billiards Professionals is to provide a platform where touring professionals can pursue the sport they love as a full time career and achieve reasonable financial success.

And the first act is to boycott an event that offers prize money. We have to lose money first, then we can grow?

I would like to see the ABP start its own tour.

I am looking at this list of potential boycotts and was wondering why I would make the trip this year?

This is depressing, and I hope Barry and crew can resolve any issues so the fans can enjoy this great event once again.

Behrman can save a lot of money in the upcoming events by just holding it in his pool room, instead of renting out a convention center.

It is a sad day in the billiard world when players make simple demands that are not met. Something as simple as proving that you have what you say you can deliver, it is common request in business, and more common are business people failing to deliver on time or on budget what they thought they could deliver.

I'll play a $100 bet with anyone on the GAL that someone on that list will end up playing in the event.

I think stating that Barry has "an absolute disrespect for players" was over the line.

The man has been running this tournament for almost 30 years, and is loved by many. To make such a claim is a bit irresponsible, in my opinion.

I think you should apologize.

Well I don't know everything, but Dennis seems like a pretty straight shooter to me and he loves pool. For him to be the attorney involved tells me the decision must be for the overall benefit of the players.. JMO..

I am not going

I'll NEVER apologize to a man who I personally know to have told one player that he wasn't going to get a dime of the $1500 he owed him if he continued to bad mouth him after the said player had already waited over three months for payment! Behrman needs to straight up apologize to every single player he's taken advantage of and quit feeding professional pool players his line of BS every year about how sorry he is and how it's never going to happen again! I'm not even close to "the line" with my comments and anyone who knows a player that's ever dealt with him financially will tell you the exact same thing!

I wish whoever made this boycott list had checked the names more carefully. I know couple players on the list whose not even ABP member. Never signed their contract, paid any membership fees or even agreed to boycott.

If I know couple, then how really accurate is the list?
