Alex being Alex

I was watching the finals of the 14.1 finals at the DCC, and Alex made a classic statement...

DA started out the scoring as he navigated his way to a 38 ball run before he missed.
Alex hands him a Billiards Digest magazine and tells Daz to read it while he (Alex) runs the set out.

CLASSIC ALEX! He is one of a kind!

It is posted in the 14.1 area that he is DRUNK. Bob Jewitt is talking about
possible punishment. Things could go bad for Alex

It was a GONG show. Being drunk is bad enough. Drunk and talking while your opponent shoots is completely offside. Daz handled it well. I was amazed he even played half as good as he did.

It's a shame.

Pretty sure no other pro has ever showed up and played a match drunk. I can't say I don't blame him as it sounds like the All-Around isn't really ALL around if one discipline is worth more than the others. I'd say free pass on this one since I don't think this is Alex's standard mode of operation.

I can't believe that Alex was not warned even 1 time. It got so disrespectful that I had paid for it and I signed off. Alex should at least be banned from the tournament next year. And people say, why can't our sport get more Sponsorship for the game...we can't make a living....and they let him right on acting up. Danny and others said, he got drunk because he lost the 20K ALL AROUND CHAMPIONSHIP...NO HE DIDN'T...SVB EARNED IT, GIVE CREDIT WHERE IT'S DUE, NOT MAKE EXCUSES FOR POOR ALEX THAT LOST THE $20,000.00. I lost a lot of respect for Alex tonight, he's supposed to be a champion. How about the people online and others that may have made a wager on Alex ???? you think they were laughing ??? Lets see how many people thought it was good for the sport, or see if enough of them post here with their comments. The people that put that event together were probably shell shocked and pissed about giving Alex any money for the act he pulled tonight. We should be very embarrassed at what he did to the sport of 14.1 - what do you think would have happened if Earl Strickland would have done that...they would have had his Balls...I'm not ashamed to post my name to this post--Duke from Wrightsville Pa...I am a 14.1 instructor and that's my personal opinion...

What do you think would have happened if Alex pulled that on Earl instead of Daz?

Him and DAZ may have already agreed to chop the cash up. That was what most at the pool hall thought. It was not a good example of 14.1 but I laughed a lot. After all its not like it was on prime time tv. It was a PPV event . Had I come that close to $20k and watched it disappear I would not need alcohol to act goofy I would have had a nervous break down

What's also a shame are the people trying to make a bet on his opponent in another thread. IMHO. Certainly looks like they were trying to take advantage of those not knowing Alex was drunk. (Some, not all, I'm sure)

What a sad, disgusting, and bizarre end to the best event in the world that pool has to offer. Instead of a celebration of all that is good in pool to end it on this note is a travesty. 2011 Derby City Classic was such a joy for pool fans like me. With so many disciplines and the professionals who have taken the time to master their skills made this soul left in awe and reverence.

I had heard what a badboy Hennessee was but his performance over Lee Van Corteza was nothing short of brilliant and I had a new found respect for him. Neils Feijen attempted comeback over SVB was so awesome that I had wished somehow they both could come out winners. Shane VBs Onepocket win and Earls elevation of his talent just showed what made champions. Dennis Orcullos victory was just magnificent and who can forget Shannon the Cannons win over the best one pocket player in the world. It goes on and on.

But Alex is human. And what it reminded me was all the times that I had performed in such a way. The asinine and unruly behaviour that I had wanted to forget and hide in my deep dark closet. Too bad it happened in such a bright light.

Alex is an adult, not a child, and he is a pro, not an amateur. He should be judged in that way. But like I said he is a human. I will try to forgive. As I try to forgive myself. And hope those who I have betrayed will forgive me
.
But let us not forget the great things that happened at the Derby. And hope that it continues on.
Thank you for all those who made this experience for me a once in a lifetime one.

Awesom post MR.i mite b a little off thread, but this does pretained to drinking alcohol and acting like a compleate ass, well thursday nite a very good pool player name rob was extra drunk and yelling out loud, that he would bet anybody that he had a bigger d_ _ _ then them, now there were women and young ones around, what a ass hole he was acting!6 months ago the same person was on here at az begging for a sponser,go figure.

In my opinion Alex has been one of the best ambassadors for pool for many years . It's unfortunate that he thought getting drunk would help , but I know the feeling, I'm guessing most people here, do.
My question is , how did it get so far before someone in charge stepped in ?
I'm not trying to pass the blame to someone else , but , drunks don't think well , thats why someone sober needs to step in.

I wasn't there, wasn't there a referee present?

Great Post Yo,

I've never been there, and I think you summed it up for us working saps who wished we were and caught what we could on the streams. Hope you make it back some day.

Best comment of the match....

Alex says ,"What's the score?"

Daz says,"I don't know, about $20k"

I was cracking up at that. I am assuming that match was for the fans only and the money was split before they ever hit a ball. Alex got hammered and ran his mouth some but I thought he was trying to score some buns so I understood. When he kept going it just got old and thank god Daz gets 30 or 40 every time he gets to the table, otherwise they would have been brutal. Alex did make 13 at one point though.

Ummm... yeah... Let's condemn alex for being drunk and put it out there that you'll try to forgive him for (cause I'm sure he's looking for your forgiveness). At the same time, lets praise Earl Strickland for his great play and ignore his NON STOP loud mouthed hot headed moments. You all know... the ones where he feels like he needs to tell everyone that the guy who just BEAT him "didn't do anything special". Then he yells at the spectators like they're all idiots for appluading Earl's opponents victory. "he didn't do anything special! You all act like he's some f'kin genious or somethin'. I made all the hard shots..." yeah yeah yeah blah blah blah go find a young impressionable kid to smoke pot with you crybaby.

I'll say this, maybe he could've handled things differently and waited to start celebrating his great play over the course of the week a little while longer, but yobagua, you need to focus your energy in the right places.
Alex may not have acted as a professional should in this instance, but he's always a nice guy and typically a gentleman. Overall, Earl could learn a few things from Alex.

Rightfully so. Earl's been pulling disgraceful stunts his entire life at tournaments like this. Everyone makes mistakes, Earl just does it more often than anybody on the planet. Someone could break and run a set on him and he'd tell the audience about how luck the guy was and how the sport has become too easy etc... he has an excuse and a list of BS reasons concerning every loss he's ever suffered. I didn't see what happened and it sounds like it sucked for the people who paid to see great pool. Sorry to all of you 14:1 huggers that you were robbed of the 1.5 hr. 125 ball yawnfest that could have been. I'm sure Alex won't look back on this moment and be proud, but do we have to throw him to the dogs so quickly. Do you think we could wait until his hangover has faded away before we send out the henchmen to collect the $7.00 you straight pool fans were robbed of? Whew! I'm sure he'll issue an apology in one way or another. Which is one thing I know, Earl Strickland the people's champ , has had some difficulty in the past. People make mistakes. It is what it is. Good job, Alex "The Crunk Monkey" Pagulayan! NOW SAY SORRY!

I'm sure this whole debacle stems from this incident, I just happened to stumble upon, when walking into the tourney room about 7:00 last night.

I am told Alex can dunk a basketball.:)

(this is high definition, so feel free to watch full screen... I got to figure out how much youtube butchers it though)
