Allison vs Grady?

Back in the 90’s there was to be a purported tour between Allison and Grady kind of a friendly ’battle of the sexes’ if you will.
Does anyone ever remember this, or if it even ever took place? A friend of mine asked me about it on the phone today so I told him I’d put it up here tonight.k

It happened -- Grady set it up as a kinda pool Bobby Riggs v Billy Jean King thing.

Suppose to be something like two dozen cities. Gerda may have been part of the entourage.

If I remember correctly Grady and Allison took a cross country tour together and played a match in quite a few different cities. I think Grady won by a narrow margin. not sure he would have fared so well at Snooker.

Yes, remember it well. The matches were close. I think it was in the late 1990s. It was a good display of pool and superior sportsmanship.

They made it as far as Maine :)
That is Maine's Tiffany Nelson, Norm Webber, and of course Allison and Grady.

I attended the one in Chicago at Chris's Billiards. Was more of an exhibition than any serious challenge match. Fun event though.

Grady had some good “out of the box” ideas for pool and events. While he was controversial, I personally got along with him and always liked him. Fun times for sure,

It would be nice to see some other pool events other than 3 digit marathon races for mystery money that isn’t always what it’s advertised to be in the advertising…… that format was burned out 10 years ago

Agree. Much rather see a match consisting of 2-out-of-3 races to 40 than one long-ass race to 120+.

Anything is better than the triple digit races.

For gambling I like races to 11 to 15, I might bet one side early and bet the opposite way later. Gives extra flexibility in betting.

For 1P I prefer the “ahead” set format.

This 3 digit marathon garbage is for streamers, not pool players IMO. While that might not be the popular opinion it’s mine & I firmly stand by it, unless the players want it, then not my biz-their call. But I think it’s still misguided

I recall seeing a "Battle of the sexes" poster with Allison holding Grady's bald head in a lock and rubbing it. That was hilarious. If someone has it, please post up a picture.

I went to one in Cincinnati or Kentucky can't remember which. Allison got caught in a storm and was waaay late. Nobody cared because Grady never stopped entertaining until she got there. Grady had a lot of respect for Allisons game ,and wasn't shy about it.
I for one miss Grady a lot, He was ,who he was, and didn't care much if you liked it or not.
He was always very generous with me with knowledge and support. RIP .

I think that I would buy the streams of virtually any type of race if it was the best in the country playing. For the 3 digit races, with winner break, the hope for me is that 1 or maybe even both players will eventually string a really big package together. That is what the 3 digit races are giving the best chance to happen.

But you're right. For gambling purposes, a few shorter races would be better. The best 2 out of 3 races to 21 would be fine too. In the Philippines, you always see the top players playing races to around 21. That seems like a good number to me. But then again, in the Philippines, they bet on EVERY GAME -- which I'm not sure makes sense to me. LOL

I think Allison would confirm that she learned a lot from Grady from this tour. She was still in the early stages of her dominant 9-ball career, although already an unmatched shotmaker for a WPBA player, or for that matter for any pro player including the men.

I’m sure Allison learned from Grady’s vast knowledge in terms of strategy, defense, two-way shots, patterns, etc. I attended one of their stops in Matthews, NC.

I'm curious, because I only know him from that glorious commentating voice for AccuStats videos, but what was so controversial about Grady Matthews?

I played Grady some straight pool late 80's and he was just like any other pool player.
He got a bit upset with himself when he made a mistake but nothing out of the norm.

Allison was a snooker champion when she was very young, Many titles won ,before she came to American pool. Her ball pocketing and speed control were excellent even in the beginning, the only weakness was the difference the cushions made and getting used to the pockets accepting a larger range of shots I remember when she first came and I watched her, I knew she would dominate the women for a while ,because of her superior position play, Some of the other women were great shot makers , but their overall approach was just weaker.

I was at the one in Columbia SC. Big crowd good time. Second time I got to meet Allison. Very professional, very classy. Can never dispute what Grady did for pool.
