Am I the only person who hates Brown phenolic linen material for joints and butt caps

I hate this material and wonder why it is used in the making of joint rings and even worse butt caps. I know that it is durable but it sure looks nasty being able to see the mesh like look in the material.

Anyone else have an opinion on this material?

How can you not like brown phenolic joints, collars, and butt caps.
I think it looks good and it ages nicely.

When it ages sometimes it fades to a non consitent color, which is another reason why I dislike it. I guess I am just too picky.

Does anyone know how long this material has been in existence?????????

Nope....I personally prefer black but also don't mind the dark brown or mahogany looking stuff on certain cues. But, man, seeing that light mustard color stuff... :barf:
 
I absolutely love it on rosewood and cocobolo cues. Especially old school 4 pointers with a stainless joint. (Tascs and Motteys come to mind)

Just my taste............

I have some Ernie Martinez cues from the early 90's with brown phenolic joint & butt cap, so it's been around for over 20-years that I know of.
Ernie wants one of them back, and he specifically mentioned the brown phenolic aging as the reason.
The cue was his player back in the day.
 
I have to agree with Kevin. the chocolate brown is okay and I have some of the old school brown, but even that isn't very consistent.
 
It has been around a very long time, I remember knife makers using it and other colors of linen phenolic since the mid 80's. I like being able to see the weave, it makes the material more interesting to look at. Sorry Kev. I dig it.
 
I think it depends on how it's used. LIke tourquoise and malachite it can be abused or it can be done just right.

I like it when done right.
 
Hate it........ To me, it looks cheap, artificial, and caca.

The only thing worse is a metal joint or butt cap.

I like black or white anything or a piece of matching wood.

I love it in the right setting. I think it is all personal taste.

I don't like clear window butt sections on cues but in some areas that is heretic talk and they look for a rope to string you up with. It's all just a matter of opinion.

No, you're not alone. Reminds me of Brown Duck Tape, or the fixed patches of kevlar we'd use to stop leaks in my friends canoe,... Not pretty to me :eek:

some of the colors fade and are hard to match as time goes on
in the past i have bought the rod so i would have that problem covered

another thing i am doing when i order rosewood cues is to order the joint collars of the same material.... rosewood not phenolic

this way the color is a perfect match,i intend to do this with all my cues in the future
if they are not ebony

some cue makers are reluctant for structural reasons,but it seems fine to me

if the rings were extremely expensive,I would probably rely on the cue makers judgement

i hate making big mistakes

If it's the darker stuff, it's my favorite.

The new light colored stuff I'm not a fan of.

Interesting idea, Dean. This will solve fading /darkening issues. However, wood color variations could make it even more difficult to get extra shafts with matching collars in the future. Unless it is ebony, or you generally can't use stock that isn't from the same board in a single cue. I.E.- if the points and buttcap are not from the same piece of lumber, it'll be noticeable. Throwing the joint in the mix has some pitfalls, but it isn't without merit. Thanks for sharing the idea.
