Oscar posted it on facebook - long an excellent So Cal tournament player who last lived in the Central Coast of California - no details. RIP Arturo.

A very beautiful player he was. When I lived in Southern Cali in the early 90's Arturo would occasionally come into The Side Pocket on Lampson and practice with someone for fun.I could watch him play all night long,He was an artist on the table and an inspiration to my own game.He played 3 cushion very well too.One night when I was in a game I was getting very frustrated and angry from my bad play.I was cussing and moaning the whole time. When I was done playing he pulled me aside and admonished me for the way I was acting. He told me wise things that left a lasting impression.

I'm very sorry to hear this.

The first time I played Arturo was quite memorable. It was a race to 5 in the first Sunday of the month 9-ball tournament at HardTimes in Bellflower.

Arturo I don't think knew me and so didn't really know if I could play. He broke the first rack, made a ball, and had a choice between an easy lockup safety or a difficult shot to pocket a ball. He opted for the offensive shot and just missed.

I ran out that rack and broke and ran the next 2 to go up 3-0. I then broke in rack 4, made a ball, and had a choice between a very thin cut into the side pocket or a safety. Like Arturo, I went for the offensive shot and the ball just grazed the point of the side pocket and hung up.

I guess I woke him up, because Arturo then ran the set out. I had one inning, and lost 5-3.

RIP Arturo.

Wow, that's incredibly sad. Good man. He used to come to the monthly HTB tournaments but it's been maybe 2 years since I last saw him.

The 'Potato Chip Man'....a stake horse from deep south Texas snuck him in on me at the old Mickey Finns in Corpus Christi. We broke even playing 9-ball and proceeded to get down playing some one pocket.....I will never forget the first game. I needed one ball...which was just less than half a diamond on the end rail from my hole. Arturo needed them all.....needless to say...he finished his run by making a beautiful carom into the last ball from up table and that was all I needed to see.

RIP Arturo

I got the news from Frank The Barber's FB page.

I first met Arturo at a regional playoff for the old Miller Lite World Series of Tavern Pool. He went right through me and, if I remember right, won the event. From then on I saw him many times at many Southern California pool tournaments. He was always a quiet and unassuming guy. Played a real straight game. I always liked him.

Very sorry to hear of this. I had drawn him a couple times in Swanee tournament and was unable to get past him. Very slow and methodical, but I watched all his shots since he showed much knowledge. RIP Arturo.

Sorry to hear of Arturo Rivera's passing. A well known Calif player for decades.
May Mr. Rivera rest in peace.

Arturo Rivera

He was a gentle soul. Solid player and although we knew each other only casually, I think he was a better person.

He always said hello. Everybody knew he played a slower speed - but he seldom complained or fussed when we had to nudge him along.

He was a fixture in west coast events.

RIP Arturo

Sorry to hear about the passing of Arturo.

I played him in 9 ball and one pocket tournaments and he was a very slow player.
I figured this was the only way he could play.

However, he was gambling at 3 cushion billiards against Shane Van Boening at Hard Times and he played 3 cushion very fast. Shane was very good but Arturo beat him by running 3's and 4's.

I would have never guessed he could play as quickly and effectively as he did.

He was a talented player.

I watched Arturo play a lot at the old Hardtimes in Costa Mesa in the 70's when I was just cutting my teeth. He was really a smooth player and I spent hours and hours watching him and Smiley, and King Kong battle it out. Sorry to hear of your passing!
