Been playing a monster

Man, this place is getting weird.
One guys, who's gotta be near 50 years old, is gonna start taking notes so he go from being a C player, to an A player.
Another guy tells the whole world he's "done" from the forum and then keeps on posting like there's no tomorrow.
And another uses the word "Gosh", to open a sentence.
Good gosh, I need an aspirin. :)

Take 3 and call me tomorrow afternoon... late. ;)

My problem is that I never see a shot that I can't make before I miss it.

Well, Jesse, out of the whole wide world of pool playing you're the first to admit to that one, that I know of. What do they call you, Jesse the Jotter? :)

Actually I didn't get much flack for it, probably because I was the best player in town and won 90% of the tournaments. That's what first got me started with the note taking, I was amazed that I could win 15 bar tournaments in a row with a race to one 8ball and consistently win almost every tournament I entered. It didn't mathematically make sense, you would figure a b player would win more often. After taking notes on my opponents for a year I realized it was a combination of shooting a .950 consistently, opponents expecting to lose to me and playing about .300 below their expected ability and being extremely lucky.

I think its a great idea Jesse. I'm putting a little note pad and pencil in my case tonight when I get home. Did you typically just use words to discribe the shot or use diagrams?

I'm getting more and more take aways from this thread. Thanks all.

Steven

I drew a diagram. A friend of mine printed up some papers with blank table layouts to fill in. I also had a list similar to what they use for accustats keeping track of safety errors, misses, scratches etc. I haven't done it in a few years but this has reminded me how fun it is to have info on all the players in town and be able to list who is the best in different areas like banking, safety and breaking. I'm going to start taking notes on matches again.

Okay, Jesse. Have it your way. But when this guy whips out his little notepad, and starts making notes on every shot he sees, there won't be anyone within fifteen miles that'll want to play him.
But, hey. If it takes a note pad or two to be able to play at a 10-speed's level then who am I to be tossing wet towels? I wish him luck. :)

McDaniel man Steven

So, lately I've been playing Chip Compton one pocket. He's giving me 10 to 4 and its embarrassing but I keep coming back for more. I hope I'm improving but dag these guys are unbelievable. A year and a half or 2 years ago I was playing James Walden a lot, and I play Joey Gray now and then but mainly play Chip right now.

I think everyone should play top level players in your area. It's going to cost a little money, but I think you will have an opportunity to experience a level of play most don't understand.

My goal is to become an "A" level player. Don't know if I'll get there but I keep trying. Gabe Owens is around every once in a while. I haven't ever asked him to play but I will in the near future.

So does this make me a sucker?

Steven

Is this the Steven that I played nine ball with? Bank auditor. Kris. Having read your responses I feel you are the Steven I played with at Don Quiotes. Most of the feedback says keep playing Chip and I agree. I do feel players should play 3 different players. Someone better. Someone the same. And the lesser player also as they will help pay the way to playing The Double Dipper! The same and the lesser will keep confidence up. Lucky for you here I am! . One of the all time greatest lesser players. I'm retired you know, and can play almost anytime. Since James C went back to work I have not played much one poc. Let's get together.

IMHO you wont learn anything going to 4, you will learn something where you have to move a bit, shoot a bit. go to 6 or 7 not 4. Most of the time when you make one you will make a few.

Yea, its me. You old stump grinder.

Jesse:

You have been in stiff competition. That alone will dramatically improve your game. I understand you got your ass handed to you for a lot of money, practiced, and came back for more. But it was the initial beat down that opened your eyes. I'm sure you are a stronger player now because of it. Maybe your girlfriend was sitting on the sideline when some stud drilled your nuts to the table. Whatever it is you are now well seasoned. You may have seen things the average c, b player have never seen or experienced.

Take another sport, like volleyball. I played competitively all the way to college. In high school a few of us were excellent players, there weren't anyone better than us, so we didn't learn anything. Then, in college, we were in stiffer competition so we had to train harder to compete with better talent. I had to hit over bigger blocks...actually I got stuffed all the time. They were monsters. Every now and then, we would head to the beach and play pickup games with the pros in the sand. That was were we improved the most.

There are things pros do that aren't in the books, and you'll just have to be there to pick it up. I watched a guy pass to the spot anytime he touched the ball. And as I observed I noticed certain things he did differently like how he stepped, forearm positioning, pre-recieving positioning and transition towards the ball. There were so many things he did right, and I mimicked everything he did.

I'm sure everyone has their way of doing things that works for them. Some learn really fast. And some only learn if you keep them interested. Whatever it may be I find being around advance players the most beneficial. Playing them affordable sets is a good way to learn. Guys that knows you are playing them cheap just to learn, will usually open up.

Hey man how goes it? you try my pushing the balls up table? i know you're trying to learn but learning how to win with different spots is all part of the game.

imo only going to 4 moving with the guy's important (because im assuming he can give you the spot if that's what you're getting) but since you're only going to 4 i figure you gotta play more aggressive. i don't mean always going for the shot but you gotta be banking balls into the stack more when you get the chance.

you should check out grady mathews 1 pocket videos. he's got some great end game shots.

I appreciate your suggestion. The way I play Chip or Joey, is the same way I try to play anyone. I will get aggressive when I think the situation calls for. I will bank balls into the stack. That's a strategy I picked up from Chip. At times, Chip will show me some pretty advanced strategy. Problem is I can't execute it like Chip or Joey, yet. Give me time guys.

I think the note pad Jesse and others talked about will help. It hard for me to always remember the situation or the shot Chip executed, especially when it's 4 or 5 days later. I'm not on a table every day. That's why I felt the need to develop a process to improve.

That's why i've stopped playing league and tournaments. I only have so many hours a week I can devote to pool. With league play, all I got was about 5 games a night. The rest of the time was social hour, which fine it just doesn't fit my objective. And, with tournaments there was too much down time between matches.

So, to gauge my progress and learn, I choose to play long sessions with strong players. Not all of them are monsters like Chip and Joey. And, I do play some who I can give balls to. If fact, I find it very challenging to give someone say 10-5. It creates a lot of stress for me when my competitor only has to go to 5.

This one cracked me up. Especially the part about the nuts getting drilled in front of the girlfriend by a stud. I'm still laughing. It's the humiliation part that Gman spoke of in an earlier reply.
Just for the record, Gman, would you mind telling us your age, how long you've been playing pool, and what level you think you're currently at? With this information I think we could come up with a more accurate assessment of your present position in the world of One Pocket, and quite possible the future. :)

You want this information to continue with your condescending and rude comments? My age and the length of time I've been playing have no relavence to an improvement process.

I've listed my process to improve for the entire pool community to see, analyze, and critic. I'm willing to bear it all (including my beat downs) if it will help me improve. But, all I've heard from you is snide comments, heckling, and attemps to make fun of me and others who post in this thread.

So, I'm asking you to stop commiting in this thread. I know its a free country and you can do what you want. But, I'm aksing you to step up and act like a gentlemen. Keep your comments, snide remarks, and rude behavior, at least out of this thread.

I didn't mean to be rude or disrespectful to Jesse with those comments. I joke around a lot so sometimes I'll say things that will offend people, but it's all with the intention of a few laughs. I hope you understand that. Peace!

As you wish, partner, but let me say this. I think this entire thread of yours has been a scam. I wouldn't have paid any attention to this crap at all, had you not mentioned One Pocket, which I take very seriously. When I asked you to pose your questions to the guys over at OnePocket.org, and you backed away, I knew you weren't on the up and up.

Steven,

You've pegged Tramp Steamer quite well.

It's unfortunate that he doesn't stick to his attempts at humor.

He's not really interested in helping you and I'm glad you didn't bite.

We'll see if he attempts to act like a gentleman as you so kindly requested.

Yeah, I agree about the thread being a scam.

It totally makes sense that this Steven guy would create a thread where he was only pretending to look for advice and constructive criticism. Meanwhile, he's sitting back laughing, saying, "Ha! I got them this time!"

Wait, no, that doesn't make any sense at all...What the hell are you going on about?

Also, Tramp Steamer, it appears that you were the one who originally screwed up the quotes for the last few posts, starting with #92.

Here's the pot calling the kettle black. The guy starts a thread telling everyone he's gone, but he never leaves. Just keeps on posting. Over 1700, or so members respond with, "Oh please Joey, don't go." or, "Be sure and tell us all about you're fishing trips." For crissakes Joey, how big of an ego do have to feed?
All I ever see you do is take the high road on any issue, but, when it comes down to backing someone up, you're no where to be found. Lock and Load comes to mind.
You're the biggest butt-kisser on this forum.
