BREAKING NEWS: 8/28 Wed 9am, Archer on Today Show with Brooke Shields and Al Roker

Watchez...I couldn't tell. Was JA even wearing a BB jersey?

I may be jumping to a conclusion, but I would think the footage would have been supplied by JA. Either way, this is another reason why Pro Pool needs an experienced marketing person/team to promote their game.

And I am laughing at all of the people posting after they saw the trick shot and seemingly disappointed. JA posted that it was going to be a trick shot. What did everyone expect?

Like I sent to Cleary the other day - so the ABP will be coming out with a trick shot tour, perfect. That is what pool needs. (sorry but I saw this coming)

I do think JA did the best with what he was given to work with in the Live portion. He stretched it out as long as he could even getting in a high five with Brooke. I have seen JA live promotions before - besides playing championship pool obviously - that is what he is good at.

edited to add: I'll bet more people try that shot today in a pool room than play a game of Bonus Ball. Even after 2 million dollars was spent on attempting to promote BB.

Yeah but Brooke Shields isn't gonna stick around while he tries a spin shot for the Nth time. It only looks cool after the so many tries have been edited out.

Thank god she's washed up anyway , he can bring his own girl , I'm sure he got many that would jump at the chance

Again that show or anything like it is not a good target market to begin with , the target market would be a kids channel or ESPN during the X games or something like that
It truly is a no brainer

I'm saving up to buy tickets for the first season of NBA Horse.

After hearing him speak at Steinway's about 100 mile per hour shots, Dennis Hatch being there with him, Brooke Shield would be in peril etc. .......................

Lame appearance, lame shot choice.........fizzled.

Thanks johnny for the response on my post about Halo the pool dog.Your such a great person and icon to the sport. It's the closes I've ben to meeting someone I really look up too,it really made my day! And i'll be bragging to all my buddies at pool league about it!

Hey kuhnhound, that ain't no fair! Your dog made more shots than Johnny!

I think he needs to spot Johnny to get the cheese (or beggin bits) on the light! :grin-square:

Saw that back then, saw it now. How is McDonalds and Pepsi working out for ya CJ?

You have a point, although under that pressure the odds of making a difficult masse' shot are "slim to none".....this segment served the purpose of putting pool in the mass consciousnesses for 30 seconds or so.

To get this type "brand exposure" (yes, pool is a brand of game) it can cost in the neighborhood of 30-50K to an advertiser. This does make an impact for sure!

One isolated occurrence of this type advertising exposure doesn't do much, but the goal should be for ALL PROS to get on TV in some way, on some station, doing something to get the game exposure.

Here's a Link (Click Here) of some exposure Earl Strickland and I got on TV in New York....it's different, but sets the "sample example" of what we all can do to make a difference.

Obviously not very well , I think that was shooting a little high and ya ther are some real nice pool halls changing the persona of smoking pool rooms
I wonder if he's ever been in Scores in Vegas thier trying the same thing with strip clubs now their called gentlemen clubs eek:

That wasn't a bad segment, particulatly considering the audience it was geared for. It was about what I expected it to be. A short visit with the anchors and a quick simple exhibition. If anyone was expecting something for the hard core pool audience you were setting yourselves up for disappointment!

that was weak, imo.

no interviews, just an intro for the shuffleboard guy, johnny, and a ping-pong champ.

1st shuffleboard guy makes his trick shot where hit knocks two disks or whatever they call them off the playing surface by sliding two other disks crossing them over diagonally at the target disks. I could prob make that shot 5 out of 10 tries. they mentioned it was a smaller shuffleboard table than normal.

then Johnny had a fun interaction with Brooke as she laid down on her back across the cheapo table which, btw, made no difference - they could have done this on a dining table if it had a corner pocket. Brook was only there as an obstacle for Johnny to shoot the cue ball over her face. he placed the cue ball on I believe, a cube of chalk (or a few cubes) and he then crouched down to strike the underside of whitey to send it over her face then rolling into the wired combo that was waiting down by the corner pocket. I think, unpracticed, I'm making that one 6 or 7 out of 10 times. His entire spot was maybe 60 seconds.

Then the ping pong guy played with a racket first then with his i phone against Brooke and the male host (don't know him).

All in all this was pretty much a waste of time.

not to be a negative nellie, just there was nothing good about it as far as promoting pool, no discussion with johnny, and the shot he got to take really must not have looked all that impressi=ve to folks at home. I don't think so, anyway.

Am I wrong in how I interpreted this segment?

Was there *anything* redeeming for pool?

best,
brian kc

I finally got around to watching the video clip of the shuffleboard, pool and ping-pong trick shots.

These circus trick shots will do absolutely nothing to promote any of these three sports. The Today show promoter shooting this segment has absolutely no clue about the complexity and the beauty of the sport that we play. If pool is to elevate its image, it certainly won't be on network tv.

In commentary at the Steinway Classic, Johnny mentioned something about the possibility of Fox (Sports !?) doing something with pool. Could it be the Mosconi Cup in the USA? Bonus Ball?

Honestly anyone expecting this to be a great way to showcase pool was way off in thinking. The fact of the matter is no matter what zany ideas people come up with, pool will never be accepted as a mainstream sport on the highest levels & end up on TV with huge ratings. Those days are long gone.

The sport is way too complex for a watered down society to grasp & accept for the challenge it really is. The only way this sport survives is on the amateur level & unfortunately most of that is catered towards leagues filled with a majority who have no interest in advancing to the upper echelons of the game.

Watching this segment was tough as seeing a game I love being treated like nothing more than a carnival side show act even though it was exactly what I expected. Marketing the sport to people of the Today show is not the answer for anything.

McDonald's and Pepsi have led to more deaths than cigarettes

Fortunately I don't use either one.....McDonald's and Pepsi have led to more deaths than cigarettes.....who would have ever guessed?

Pros on local television. I like it. Local morning television is always looking for those types of segments.

Pros promoting their own game. What a novel idea.

Not to mention exposure for a local hall.

Yeah, but...........what a way to go !!!

Maniac (something is going to cause you to die someday.....may as well be something you enjoy )

We all kind of laughed at this, but the video has become one of yahoo's featured videos right now and they did one of their daytime in no time segments on it. That's not a lot, but that's something.
