Keith was taking a shot at Bucktooth. He had $300, playing Bucktooth on the bar table, $100 a game, spotting him the 5 and the break, which Keith says "Bucktooth had the nuts."

The games went forth, and then the bet was raised to 200, then 300. People were betting on the side. The funny thing about it was that, according to Keith, it looked like Bucktooth lost games on purpose, so the rail would lose their money, and then Bucktooth could win it all. But it backfired. Keith proceeded to run out and held him on the break. The incident happened in Bucktooth's pool room in Castro Valley.

Keith agreed to play him the next day, adjusted the spot, then went back to the same spot, and both games stunk for Keith. Keith proceeded to lose $5,000 back to him, and then left town winner.

I have only met Bucktooth once, when I was in Vegas a few years ago, and I found him to be quite charming. He was genuinely nice to me, and Keith seemed like he enjoyed seeing Bucktooth. They chatted away for quite a while, the two of them.

Here's my one and only Bucktooth pic! :)

Ok. I'm a youngun here and was in diapers in the 70s... the LATE 70s.

Can someone explain to me why they call him Bucktooth? I mean, in these pictures it doesn't look like he has buck teeth.

Sorry if this is a dumb question.

It's not if you never saw him in person. When he smiles, he can hoe a garden with his teeth.

Is that anything like eating corn on the cob through a picket fence?

Ok, here is Keith.....(well, my version)

That's funny! I love it! :)

Keith really does love Earl Strickland like a brother, as long as he doesn't have to play him!

Earl is always very nice to Keith and me when we see him at tournaments. He always comes up to me and gives me a hug and a kiss on the cheek. What's not to like about Earl? I feel honored to have him as our friend.

Agreed. Earl is the man! (Just thought it made for a funny cartoon)

I love the cartoon and can't wait to show it to Keith.

BTW, I hear that my reps are worth 300 points. I just learned that today via a PM. I can't give out any more today, but tomorrow you will be first on my list! :)

Thanks for creating a cool pool cartoon! :)

I agree, reminds me of the old school cartoons they had talking about current events or a hot topic. :)

Ya know Matt.. I'm pretty sure you could make a few dollars in the pool world if you find a way to draw some pics and get them transferred to t-shirts.

Heck, I might even commission a sketch for the wall of my billiard room if you are for hire. Those drawings are good!

Matt, I have to say that actually does look like me! You're a pretty good cartoonist, man. The funny thing about that picture is that when I was wearing a shirt like that and could back it up, I offered Earl the last two. Earl turned it down. I don't know if he turned it down because he didn't want to knock his action or just maybe he couldn't win. :D

At the same time, I was giving Kim Davenport the 7-ball, and Earl was sitting right there in the pool room. Earl had not peaked yet, and he had to be about 18 or 19 then. Of course, we all know how Earl escalated from there.

Me and Earl did have our battles. There was a lot of hill-hill matches. One time, we were playing in Richmond, Kentucky. It was at the Clyde Childress tournament, and you had to call kicks, no lucking in balls. If you lucked in a ball, the other guy got ball in hand. I made one of the greatest kick shots on Earl and called it. I was dead snookered. I kicked at the 5-ball two rails, went off the side rail, called the ball in the right-hand corner pocket, and it happened to go on. But then I missed the 7-ball down in the corner getting too excited from all the electricity in the building after that shot. The whole place went nuts. I ended up losing the match, 11 to 10, a real heartbreaker.

The next year, I got even with Earl. I beat him 11 to 10 in the finals at the same tournament. I have all the respect in the world for Earl, especially when he was in his prime. I believe that he was, in my opinion, the toughest to beat for an eight-year span as a tournament player, as I have seen. And I've seen a lot of champions. If you didn't get up there and run 5, 6, and 7 racks on Earl, you weren't getting the money. It didn't matter who he was playing back then. Everybody had to fade those 5, 6, and 7 packs that Earl produced time and time again. :)
