Calling out Jay Halfert

I'm still trying to figure out who Jay Halfert is? Is it like Bizzarro Jay Helfert?

That is a different Jay Helfert.
You're thinking of the road player named Bizarro Jay Helfert who just took 9th
in the Justice League Open.
I think Jay was kidnapped and replaced with a different Jay Helfert who happens
to post on AZ Billiards and apparently doesn't like Earl.

"Pool Wars" a great book by Jay Helfert.

You can order it here at: jayhelfert.com
Nice web site some great DVD's too.
IT must really bug Agent 99 to know that
his thread might end up making his buddy
Jay some cheese. LOL

If there arent any pictures in it I cant buy it. Mom only buys me books with pics. She says the words in most books are the devil.

My only question I have for everyone that has defended Jay is.... How is Agent99's rep still all green?

Cuz the rep system is broken, and no one bothers much anymore. Even if we were to make him all red, it would merely take one person who sympathized with hime to hit him with a green and change him back.

That's why you don't see many folks with red any more.

That explains it, because my first job (1967) was in a pool hall.
If BC was in the pool world before I was born, he would be older than the faces you see on cash.

Sorry, you sounded young and dumb. However. book collector has most certainly been
around long enough that any lack of perspective is not due to lack of experience.
FWIW - he was quite the friend of a gentleman who was a world beater well before
either of us were born.

Yeah, I screwed up because my emoticon wasn't strategically placed well enough for some people.
I blame Jay & Earl, if it wasn't for them this wouldn't of happened in the first place.

Thanks to all of you who spoke up on my behalf. For me AZB feels like part of my extended pool family. I feel fortunate to have made so many friends on here.

and if Jay did say anything about earl it would be true.

he is a disgrace to the game and should not receive the benefits other top pros do

I don't know Jay beyond this forum. But I've read enough here regarding him, from countless people, and read enough from him to know that he is the real deal. And the OP is WAY out of line.

See, he has people who aren't necessarily his friends sticking up for him.

Just people who can see the forest for the trees...

Nice post Dub. I hope you get the opportunity to meet one of pool's long standing ambassadors of the game. I've been fortunate to get to know him a bit and it ALL was due to AZ - sparked by a rep comment he gave me @ 8 years ago when I was a relative newbie. I'll never forget the pat on the back that read "you make more sense here than anyone". :embarrassed2: :)

Shortly thereafter I met him at The Open (8 years ago) and between reffing he made a little time and showed genuine interest. Shortly after that I had flown from NC to CA for a family/college get together in Ventura. I had an early flight out and it's a biotch of a drive down the 101 to LAX during rush hour. Jay lives minutes from LAX and he offered - almost insisted to put me up.

I took him up on it. Thanks Jay. He was tied up that afternoon so he steered me to a pool hall in Torrance (Mr Lucky's?). He steered me well, and I got a couple good games. When it came time to pay table time, "it was on the house". Thanks Jay.

Met him at his humble abode after pool. A perfect Diamond in the dining room awaited - along with Jay and MING NG! Pool Wars was JUST hot off the press. He and I sat in his office and after he hand wrote meaningful messages into each book, I put them in packets and slapped postal labels on. Jay would tell me "this one is for so and so", some were destined to AZers and some to icons. Fascinating. It was a catalyst to become more immersed in pool. Not sure I want to thank Jay for that. :p

Pool Wars packaging done, we got down to biz on his Diamond. There I played my 1st game of 1P and got great instruction. What a blast. After Jay went back into his cave, Ming and I played 10B into the night. I hung pretty well with her on my first Diamond, but she was a might bit strong for my game. The smiling woman can play! And what a good heart she has. Thanks to the Empress!

Quick 2nd story relating to Jay as a person. @ 3 years ago I left my leather jacket after the finals on a seat at The Open. I go there next morning to look for it. I see Jay during tear-down and ask him where the lost and found for dumbasses is. It was nowhere to be found. A few days later he mails me HIS Italian leather jacket to my house proclaiming "what the hell do I need a leather jacket for in So Cal?". Thanks Jay. I wear it proudly.
--------
Not many imbedded pool people make it through over 5 decades in it with such grace and pinache. I trust the pool world thanks him. It would be different landscape if he'd taken his father's advice and been a financial advisor or whatever path he'd rejected for pool.

Hey Jay, can you make me a sandwich now? ;)

I, for one, have had enough of your reading your bullshit on this forum.

You continue to bash Earl Strickland at every chance, it's actually comical.

Several weeks ago you wrote here that Shane and Earl would not win a single match in this current event .. what a joke you are.

I responded to you that I would gladly wager a dime against your big mouth , and as I expected you simply disappeared.

So what exactly is your problem, Jay?

If you want to run that big mouth of yours, than you need to man up and put some cash behind it.

Tired of your cheap and continuous attacks on Earl. what's the beef big shot?

I say it's time for you to shut up or put up .. how bout it Jay?

Obviously you have nothing better to do. If you start a thread every time someone isn't positive about your player, you will be very busy and this forum will be full of your rubbish right, moron ?
:D

Hahaha. He taught him a bit on Banking.

But Alexander, was also bald. He wore a rug and even back then, was known as Toupee Alex. So, Jay did steal one thing from him.

I have to further Cues post. Jay has given me an open offer to visit and play pool with him anytime.

To this day, the bloody cheap skate hasn't offered a plane ticket.

Just a little off putting it is.

I met Jay in 1967 at Ye Billiard Den. He used to play on the front table and seemed to know everyone who came in there. We became friends.
Since that time he has devoted himself to pool and the game itself. Through every aspect. Something I couldnt do. Even though I love the game and had a passion for it.
But Jay was born for it. He was just a part of it. Most dont know but he comes from a very good family. He could have easily gone into a field where he would just get the respect he deserves. Instead he has gone into a game where any Tom, Dick, and Chump can get out of line with you. The kind of guy who has no idea what this man has done. Because in pool they dont give you a doctorate. A diploma, A office in a high rise with bulls and bears.
They give you nothing in return for all the hard work and help you give to those who need it. As Jay has done. He did what I didnt do. He did what I couldnt do. Show some d#$m respect for the man. Without guys like him pool would be worse off than it is now. You know the guys willing to sweep up your crap so the show can go on. I was never able to do that.
Jay you been one of the good guys. We all owe you a debt of gratitude. Guys like this will come up every once in a while and like squeaky wheel get the attention. However the bulk of people know you and have a great respect for you.
Its has been an honor and pleasure knowing you, Jay

PS I did have an opportunity to work with the original Agent 99. Barbara Feldon. In an episode of Get Smart. She is the most wonderful person and very kind and professional. I had to laugh when I saw your moniker and thought how ironic.

Sorry my mind is too clouded by the great experience I had on the show. The guys all have this tough guy persona but underneath a real respect for the craftsman. They showed me a lot of love. Particularly Charlie and Paris Barclay (director/producer) I wish them all well and am sad that they killed me off last season. However I just received a notice (and check) in the mail saying they are using some of my film from previous episodes this season to recap.

To all you SOA haters. Its just a show. Something might not have reached your expectations for you to be happy for it to die. Im sure there are other shows that can satisfy your needs. But remember when a show dies about 500 people become unemployed.

Between SOA and Justified, those are currently my two favorite shows, and I am so bummed out that they both are in their final seasons.

Keone, you didn't make such a bad choice for yourself. You've had a great career as a character actor and have worked with some of the best in the business. I wish I could have been half as good as you, bombing out in the few commercials I worked on.

I think it's great that we have successful people like you who support our sport. Thanks!

I'm a little late on this thread. I have to think that the OP does not know Jay but only has maybe a slanted view of him from a post or two where Jay wasn't blowing sunshine up Earl's ass. Probably not insulting him but just not nut hugging him. That's the only reasoning I can come up with and even then it's a bit lame. My personal knowledge of Jay is that since I began working in the pro pool and billiards arena he has been nothing but nice, kind, informative, helpful and respectful toward me. He is a great guy who I have known for a number of year and honored to call him a friend.
