My question is who is the power broker in their clique.... Is it JA or is it truly CW? Putnam is obviously along for the ride....

If it weren't for mike dechaine being on the team, I probably wouldn't't care to follow it now, either. Politics really annoys the crap out of me, so to see it affect the mosconi cup team is truly a sad thing.

What an amazing thread this is. My first thought is, "He who is without sin should cast the first stone." But why wait when it's so much fun to vilify someone. I'm not for a moment condoning Charlie's transgressions, but there are other elements at play here. No question that Charlie and his Dragon Promotions team have been good for professional pool in the last several years. And that Charlie enjoys a good rapport with many of the top players. He has, after all, found ways to put money in their pockets.

That said, I think one thing we are forgetting is the real value of having a good coach, and not one who is just a figurehead. I for one don't think it should be solely an honorary position, given as a perk for having a distinguished career. No question that Johan, the European coach, makes a huge difference in the success of their team. He not only motivates his players, he is adapt at putting the right player in at the right time. My point being that this is much more than an honorary job.

Putting all personal issues aside, I think Charlie will prove to be a good coach for Team USA. To me the bottom line here is to have a winning team in the Mosconi Cup. That's what will be recorded for history to see. Not what kind of person Charlie Williams is or was. There have been a lot of very successful coaches in other major sports that were not so highly regarded on a personal level. But that is lost for history, the only thing remembered is how successful they were. Bear Bryant from Alabama and Woody Hayes from Ohio State are two cases in point. Bob Knight from Indiana is another coach who raised a lot of questions for how he treated his players and the fans.

Whether you like Charlie or not, the bottom line will be can he bring out the best in his team and get a victory.

Yeah I am suddenly less interested in the event. WTG Matchroom...

It is with the pocket book and decisions to NOT support the Mosconi Cup this year due to this short sighted and politically motivated decision made by Matchroom that they might figure it out, rethink what they are doing, and give these types of postitions to more deserving people in the future. If people still go and people still watch they could not care less what those people "think".
Celtic, the problem is if its not worth it to Matchroom to do it or they see a decline they may just say "Screw this" and not hold the event anymore. I would hate to see that happen. Just a thought.

Don't know CW but i think they should've made Earl captain. Would've been way more entertaining! Plus he has more MC wins than any one i think...

Seriously don't care who the captain is. He doesn't play on the team and our USA team is pretty strong none the less. Food for thought though, no matter who team captain is, there is not a pro player out there who will turn down a free payday.

piece,

Justin

One would hope that someone at matchroom takes enough care in their job to come to AZBilliards which is known as the most popular message board for our sport and read the opinions on the decisions they are making. Barry Berman, Mark Griffin, Charlie Williams, Jay Helfert, ALOT of people in the pool industry read and post on AZB and one would hope that SOMEONE at Matchroom keeps their eye on the forums and reads about the opinions the fans of the sport have with regards to their tournaments.

The decline will not be a lack of interest in the sport or the tournament, it will be a direct result of a very unpoular decision that Matchroom made despite the clear wishes of the fans that have supported the Mosconi Cup and helped it be one of the most successful events in pool for decades.

If they have a "well then we are taking our ball and going home!!!" type of reaction from the fans giving them a clear message on this then they are not acting like a proper professional organization.

Matchroom Sports is a successful European company, right? I'm sure they thought long and hard before selecting the best captain for the American team.

you are not american which makes ur opinion less meaningful.

Also you can't beat charlie either!

In closing.....you still can't beat charlie.

"Charlie Williams named as Captain Team USA Mosconi Cup!"

..and here's your sign. :o

Jay, my only question is do you know why they did not keep Nick?

I love Nick Varner and spent time playing in his pool room in KY. But IMO he is not a very dynamic coach. Plus, he has been coach for several years in a row. So it's time for someone new. But Charlie would not have even been on my top 10 list as coach.

I'm working on an action match as we speak between CW vs JJ..more to follow soon!!

Jay - two of the 3 coaches you mentioned were fired. And it was not solely based on their conduct on how they treated their specific players.

Mikey u may want to fall back from this discussion..Saw just hit me and it seems due to your choice to go against the team and favor heavily in the defense of cw..u may very will be at risk of elimination of your "underworld" status..we will be having a vote later this evening..hang tough buddy..I will try to get u out of this..But it is well known our team is strongly against cw or any cw affiliations..and u clearly are riding against the team.............................
