George told me Rags was the best he ever matched up with. Jay,did you play George?

Of course not. Do you think I'm crazy? I couldn't beat the shortstops around Dayton when I was a kid.

Hi

I'm interested in this topic out of curiosity and partly for commercial reasons. :D

Some qs:

1) I have the book The Bank Shot by Fats and which chapter does he mention about the "Masked Marvels"?

2) Also, does anyone know of any Photos of these guys exist online?

Thanks a bunch

Cuycuy,

If you bring back the Masked Marvel I think you will be considered a marketing genius. I'm sure back in the day these guys attracted a lot of attention.

So far, we have Joe Procita, Erwin Rudolph, Ralph Greenleaf, Johnny Lineen & Andrew St Jean. Let's see who else was involved...

Ralph Greenleaf was NOT one of the Masked Marvels. They were, by in large, lesser known (although very skilled) players. They did perform in different areas of the country, sometimes during the same time periods. Back in those days they didn't have quick communication (a letter often took two weeks to cross the country by mail), and a long-distance phone call was a big deal. Greenleaf, on the other hand, was top dog during the 'masked marvel' period, and would never hide his face behind a mask. Plus, the Masked Marvels were paid very little for their performances. Greenleaf was making $2000 a week (during the late 20's and early 30's...an enormous income for the times!

"Cowboy" Charles Weston was indeed another of the "Masked Marvels".
Our list grows....

Freddie,

Weren't you once known as Freddie The Mask, and later Freddie Without The Mask?

The September 2007 BD has an artical about Greenleaf, ST. Jean, and others. They also metioned the Coca Cola Masked Marvel's but didn't nane many of them. Johnnyt

This has got me curious as to just who and how many players participated in the "Masked Marvel" exibitions...so....I contacted Coca Cola and after speaking with several people, I was able to speak to a person in their company who is going to research this and send me the info when they get it. They even gave me a reference # that is assigned to this question.
When I hear back, I will post what they give me.

This is great. Maybe it will give Coca Cola some thoughts about resurrecting the team.

I think three pool players should all wear masks, travel the country and go into pool halls now and ask for action. I wouldn't be suprised if they got action everywhere they went. :D

Jay, my guess is that he may have picked up that moniker from all those old porno films he was in.:D I've heard that in the real old ones, everyone wore masks. Of course back in Freddie's day they called those films "smokers".

I e-mailed Coke about a month ago asking for the names of the players. It's probably like everything else pool related...they didn't write it down. You would think that Coke would at least e-mail me back with a, "we don't know." I drink the damn stuff too. Johnnyt

Thanks...

Punter

Thanks for the link on the story about Andrew St. Jean. I'm from his hometown and knew people that knew him. I've heard a lot of stories and am happy to see a story about a hometown legend.

Anyone old enough on here to remember the Coca-Cola Masked Marvels that use to come into the bars in the NY area in the 1920’-1930’s? They wore masks and would play the best guys in the place. I believe my dad said one of them was Greenleaf. Anyone know who some of the others might have been? Johnnyt

Out in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, there was a guy with the nickname "Tony Meatball" who was one of the masked marvels. The last I saw him was in the late 1980's and he was in his 90's. He shot as good as any "A" player, and I believe he was still able to string some 100 ball runs together.

Jean Balukus may be able to offer more info, but not sure if she checks this forum.

Johnny,
Along with the email you've sent, I have also followed up with the ref # that was assigned as per the earlier email in this thread and nothing new has been found, according to Coke. I'm begining to think that if the whole list of who all was involved as the Masked Marvel's is to be found, we'll have to find it from another source other than Coke.

I'm right on it and will post up some info when I locate it! :p

I love this kind of pool trivia! :)

BTW, package received! WOW! Thank you so very, very much!
