Danny DiLiberto almost died!

APA is a bunch of blood suckers.

First and foremost, get well soon, Danny D.

To my knowledge, there are just two categories for BCA HOF induction, for play and for meritorious service.

The incomparable Danny D would be a very fitting addition to the HOF in either category, but I have to disagree strongly with the poster who suggested that Terry Bell and Larry Hubbart are undeserving. Given how much the APA, the organization they founded, has meant to our sport for decades, I find it astonishing they are not already in the BCA HOF.

something doesn't add up...

The OP indicated that Danny D. was very disappointed that he was passed over for induction into the 2010 HOF.

It has since been clarified here that Danny was not eligible for the 2010 HOF consideration as his category isn't scheduled for a vote until 2011.

Was Danny not aware of this? It would be a shame if he were stressing over being excluded this year when that really wasn't the case.

Best,
Brian kc

Wow I just seen this thread...

Any updates on Danny?

I had the pleasure of handing over money to him this year, took lessons at Red Shoes. It was the best money I have spent, great guy and stories. Was happy to hear from him that I wasn't wasting my time, since I heard that he doesn't pull any punches.

Get well soon and hope to get some more lessons next time you come around.

Danny is home and resting

Masirib5...I have no qualms about supporting Danny D's potential inclusion in the HOF. He was a fantastic player and deserves to be inducted. I do have a problem with people bashing others because they (mistakenly) believe that Danny D got "passed over" because of some political BS. He wasn't inducted simply because he didn't get the votes...period. Better luck next year.

Scott, I have to disagree with you on this. I think that by everyone supporting Danny and giving him best wishes to gain back his physical health, it is just as important for us to support him mentally by stating how we feel about him getting the preverbal "shaft" on getting into the HOF.

If there is anything that can help a physical condition, it is a positive attitude. He deserves the best of everything and DANNY IS ONE OF THE GREATS!!!

The BCA HoF Committee has set up a "Veteran Players" category. The intent is to be able to consider players of past generations without having them compete against contemporary players. The thought process is that there are a lot of these players that aren't getting votes because the modern players are getting them.

That is to say the the HoF Committee completely understand that the older players are being forgotten, even by the voting members. They're trying to give the veteran players like Danny D. a better shot at getting in. So, to all that are pissing on the BCA HoF Committee, give it a rest. The committee of today is trying. And they'll continue on trying.

Jose' turned the age that the committtee deemed as the limit and therefore will place him in the Veteran category for next year's voting. Is this a backward move for Jose'? Possibly. But last year was probably the closest he's gotten to getting in, while this year he wasn't anywhere near close. I was sure he was going to get in this year.

Personally, I'd like to see the Greatest Player age criteria changed to at least 50. Having players near their prime inducted just doesn't seem right to me. The Hall of Fame should be about remembering the players. You don't need to "remember" the three latest inductees since they're all still winning tournaments!!!

I would speculate that when he was told that he was being put into the Veterans Player Category, the messages of when that category would be initiated and that it still would go through a voting process weren't fully delivered.

I first met Danny back in '67 at Johnston City. He was a nice guy then and
has been ever since. He is a true credit to our sport.
Get well Danny.

Anyway, please keep Danny in your prayers, he's 75 years old and not out of the woods yet. His health is declining and he has no income other than a few lessons now and then and his commentary for Accu-Stats, which isn't nearly enough to survive on. QUOTE]

Danny D

A very good friend of mine was in the military and stationed in Georgia during the early-mid 60's. He actually had the pleasure of doing some traveling with Pot's 'n Pans and Handsome Danny during long furloughs then. Quite often, Miami and the Congress Bowl would be their destination, because there was always action. At this time, the Congress Bowl was a second home for Danny. From the stories I have heard from this first hand witness, Danny tortured anyone wanting to gamble with him. Canadian Champ George Chenier didn't like it nor did Ciscero Murphy.
As for myself, I lived in Mesa, AZ, in 90-91 and Danny was the house man at the Golden 8-Ball in Phoenix. Tommy's was only a couple blocks from where I was staying. During that time, the Arizona State One-Pocket Championship was held at Tommy's. I had the pleasure of watching him play several matches, including the Finals. His demeanor throughout was very calm and confident. When it became his shot at the table, he almost seemed like he was sneaking out of his chair with complete attention as to what the layout was on the table. Smooth and silky were his moves. Upon winning the Championship, Danny loudly announced, "A round of drinks for everybody!" There were probably 50 or so spectators and other folks playing pool in the room. He probably bought 65 -75 drinks out of his huge $500 winnings. I thought it was a cool move on his part. Plus, the couple occasions I had to speak with him, he welcomed the conversation and never made me feel out of place.
Very cool guy with the heart of a lion.

Hopefully he can recover from any ill health.

How long has this "HOF" existed? I'm sure people like Danny predate it by a long shot. Personally I think legendary players like him should have been put in automatically, without any vote or doubts. Let those that have good standings and achievements but not quite in the legendary realm vie for nominations and get voted in or not. This does continue to show that pool continues to show signs of bad decision making and/or management skills. I don't really think that there is any animosity towards Danny or other players aswell, but I could be completely mistaken. Like I said he should already be in when this HOF was first formed.

Get well Danny, hope to see you again.

Danny called me this week to wish me a Happy Birthday. Thats the kind of guy he is. With all his woes he thinks of his friends. He is up and around and after having to be on a liquid diet is eating some solids and feeling better. He doesnt want anyone to make a fuss and just wishes you all to be out there at the US Open where he will be and the Straight Pool event in New Jersey. Buy his tapes and stream the event. He would love to hear from you all. He loves pool and loves life even more. Always an inspiration to me in my darker moments and always was there to give me good guidance. When I hit 60 and was feeling old he told me "get your butt out of bed. When I was your age I ran 20 miles a day!!!". Thanks Danny. They broke the mold when they made you.

I have read as much as I could find about Danny's bio.
When I first became a member here, someone was kind enuff to send me an autographed poster of when Danny was inducted into the One Pocket Hall of Fame. Last week, I finally found a frame big enuff to fit the poster so its getting hung on the wall of the cue shop.
Give Danny my best Sherm.
Terry.
Just waiting for KC (Brian) to give that other Danny a kick to get him in gear and I'll have 2 Danny's on my wall.

Does Danny belong in before Jose Parica? Just curious what others think (I don't know myself). I love Danny and wish him the very best health.

Spider, I think you and I were thinking along the same line. While I did not think Parica or any other specific player, I thought who could they name that would make ANYONE happy that they passed over Danny?

Danny is one of those players that when you meet him for the first time he makes you feel like youve known him for years. At least thats the feeling I had. Its too bad there isnt more like him, but he comes from a different era of pool and he is among the cream of the crop from that era.

With the fan base that Danny has you could have inserted any name and said they were getting the nod for the Hall of Fame and no one would have liked Danny getting passed over.

Danny, you should be in the Hall of Fame and I sure hope you get well soon.

Get well soon Danny
I'm curious if most pool players would even know who Terry Bell is ? Maybe they all do and I just don't know it . I'm just curious

Terry Bell was at one time one hell of a 9 ball player. on given day he played the game almost as well as anyone. he was never known as big gambler, jus wasn't his deal.
When I saw him he owned a place in Texarkana called the Road Map which I believe Country Calvin eventually ended up with.
larry Hubbart came through Texarkana and they played for many days and Larry ended up ahead but not alll that much.People came from the entire Ark-LA-Tex area to sweat this. After that he and Larry teamed and formed the APA.
Is the choice Political? i don't know, I don't pay attention to the BCA! Shoould Danny be in the Hall of Fame? Absolutely!! I wish him well!!

i agree, they have made a fortune!!

IMHO his Accu-stats contributions alone should get him in the HOF. With that said I wish Danny well and hope to see him around soon.
