They really ought to have an "industry class" nomination in the Hall of Fame. You're comparing apples to oranges trying to even compare Danny's achievements to Terry's and Larry's.
It would be like running an Academy Award show with Spielberg having to face off against Brad Pitt for an award. Just doesn't really make any sense, does it?
Both parties have their qualifications to receive an award, but are they really comparable? I have my feelings about the APA's motivation and it's a business, pure and simple. Look at Renee Lyle's (APA President) profile on the APA's website. It doesn't say much about pool. It does laud her franchising and marketing skills, her committee skills, her promotional skills, etc., though. She's interested in how many people are playing pool from a dollars and cents standpoint, not who the best road players and gamblers were.
As bad as that seems, it's a necessary evil to keep this game going. If the game dies, it's a moot point who the HOF members were. As much as football fans want to see their favorite multi-million dollar players playing on the weekends, and as much as they enjoy the game of football, without those pesky sponsors and a competent crew of business people behind the scenes setting up the bleachers and sound systems, it wouldn't happen. Think the sponsors are in the mix for their love of the game? Not me... I think it's strictly motivated by how much of their product they sell to football fans, pure and simple.
That being said, I think they are doing a real injustice to Danny, who should absolutely be in the Hall of Fame. He shouldn't have to take a back seat to people that he could have beaten like red headed step children at the game that the HOF has been set up to immortalize. He shouldn't have to compete against someone with his pool accomplishments versus their franchise sales accomplishments, even though those franchise sales help keep the game going. Simple solution, an award for industry class so you don't have to compare those apples with the oranges...
One way or another, even in his seventies, I'd still back Danny in a fist fight with the nominating committee! Get well soon, Danny! Pool needs you, HOF, or not!
Steve
(Hoping to see Danny's name on that HOF list soon)
