Daryl Peach is on mega tilt!!!!

1. Is pool closer to WWF or soccer? Entertainment or sport?

2. If the latter, why is a character like Earl tolerated by promoters and fellow pros?

3. The two arguments defending Earl's behavior are:

a) They were jibing at Earl first;
b) Earl's a man's man and he'll let those f****** know!

Well,

a) Why do people jibe at Earl specifically? Has he not put himself in a position to be jibed at?

b) Is manhood jumping impulsively at anyone and anything slightly upsetting or is it picking your battles and fighting the one's you pick with all your heart?

I tend to associate the "Mom, he did it first!" and blowing your top off at every provocation with the behavior of insecure puberty-age boys, not men.

If manly behavior is what you look for, I don't see how you'd take exception to Rodney Morris.

But maybe Earl's fanfare is entertaining to most, I don't know! What a character! I don't know whether a McEnroe of pool is good or not for the sport! But these maladjusted geniuses populate every sport in the world, without exception.

And exactly what was John McEnroe other than a crybaby!! And why don't you call either McEnroe or Earl a "wus" to their face!!

LOL

If you can't distinguish berween the behavior of Johnny Mac
and Earl, there isn't any way to explain it to you.

Wus in that instead of standing up like a man and refusing to fold,
say like Rempe, or Varner, or Fusco, he would go into tantrum mode
and self-destruct.

What do you think are the odds I would have been intimidated by
Earl in 1982?

That audience is located where again?

Europeans can act like barbarians at the Mosconi Cup, and nobody says a peep.

Don't forget JAM these were the same people that exploit others through out the world during the colonial period and then turned around and acted at home like they were the epitome of decorum and civilized behaviour. These are people that are use to a double-standard.

Hear, hear, and a tap tap tap! :p

That is a very astute observation, one which is backed up by facts, too.

You must be referring to OUR forefathers. But it sounds good anyway. :D

They were our forefathers as well, but it is not us exercising the double-standard in this case, it is Europeans, hence the reference. Dispite the behaviour of our forefathers and even present day Americans in this regard, nobody but nobody outdid the British historically in terms of double-standards. All I'm asking is that people who critisize Earl so severely, take a good look in the mirror too. You know, "there but by the grace of god go I." Earl maybe has more faults than a lot of people, but he is not unique in his shortcomings.

Meanwhile, my ancestors, the Native Americans, really got the short end of the stick! :o

Of course, mixed in with my Native American heritage, the rest is pure Irish. :D

It is no wonder I can't handle any alcohol! :o

I agree that we all have shortcomings, but most of us can cope with stressful situations and use self control to govern our behavior. And there are a few who do not have these coping mechanisms or self control. I can think of one right now who plays pool.

This is so true. A lot of us have to deal with a lot of stress every day as part of our jobs and just snapping once and a while is not an acceptable way to act. Pool players are not the only people who have to perform under pressure.

Holland. It's the same clip you said showed the US players being heckled. You still haven't let us know where exactly it happens on that clip, even though you've been asked to repeatedly, because nobody else can find it.

Europeans can act like barbarians at the Mosconi Cup, and nobody says a peep.
In what way are they acting like barbarians Jam? By winning and cheering? Showing genuine passion for a sport you bemoan is dying on its feet? And doesn't someone call out when the American wins at the end? Are they not a barbarian too, or do you only become a barbarian by cheering in unison with a foreign accent?

I think you're secretly a little miffed that Americans can't be bothered to turn up and support their team. I bet if you talked to the few Americans who did make the journey they would say they enjoyed it immensely, and far from being intimidated they had the time of their lives and wished pool could always be that dramatic. Why don't you ask them Jam. They post here.

Although I think the foam antlers/hats and noise makers are silly, they are no more so than the way football fans dress.

For reasons already discussed to death, Euros/Asians enjoy watching pool matchs vastly more than Americans do and if they want to have FUN while watching, that's fine with me.

The practice of remaining deadly quite during play has never made any sense to me. Whereever I play out, the juke box is BLARING...people walk right by the tables when others are shooting etc.

Take boxing for example. AT LEAST as much concentration/precision is required to box as play pool and yet people are yelling and screeming constantly.

So I say, let the fans be fans...which means FANATIC...be fans and get some EXCITEMENT into a sport that is almost totally devoid of it.

Other than having to compete with the NFL/NHL/MLB/NBA and golf for viewer attention...which is a MASSIVE problem for pool...the fact that pool is boring to watch, even for active pool players let alone the fans, is the answer to all questions relating to pool's lack of popularity.

So....YEP...BAN THOSE JUMP CUES....the fans love jump shots but who the hell cares about THAT??

And by the way...I really HATED it when pole vault poles abandoned the traditional bamboo poles. Hell, jumping 12 feet was high enough! Going to fiberglass to set a 20 foot world record was a tragedy for the sport.

BRING BACK BAMBOO POLES so we can bore the fans to death!!

They could call this the Strickland Cup for all of the invitations and appearances he has made - the most of any player?

Years ago, Jeannette Lee went 4W for 4 according to the Program - no one else has 100%. Was she the only woman to be invited?

Are we going to get back on topic, heavens forbid.

Well since we are... Why aren't the teams mixed gender?

I have no problem with fans hooting and hollering between shots, though like you I think it is kind of silly. However, I disagree with you that requiring quiet during shots is not necessary. In most other sports the level of activity of the sport itself commands your attention you don't have to worry about distractions. For instance, I play soccer as well as pool, once a soccer match gets started and I'm in to it, cannons could be going off and it wouldn't take away my attention to the game. On the other hand, in sports like pool and golf you have to will yourself to concentrate, it is a much, much more difficult thing to do. Also the game requires much more precision than many other sports and therefore requires more concentration.
JMHO.

they are. jeanette and vivian have played in it before. ttrouble is, what woman player can you name that deserves to be in either team ahead of a man. unless you meant compulsory female spots...

I was think more of a co-ed team men vs. men, women vs. women.

You're welcome to review the video Jam posted. Can you point to any instance where the supporters were anything else but on their best behaviour during the actual play? I can't. I can't see that it makes a blind bit of difference how much noise they make once the stroke has been played. What you won't find is any heckling, or, I suspect a retraction of that unfounded accusation forthcoming from Jam.

On the other hand, in sports like pool and golf you have to will yourself to concentrate, it is a much, much more difficult thing to do
That may be true, but I can guarantee it's not true for me. I've played with a complete bunch of piss-takers for years. Only getting me to laugh ever works. I suspect if snooker was traditionally played before braying crowds instead of reverential quiet the standard would be just as high. It puts them off because they're not used to it. That obviously wouldn't be the case if they were used to it. You can't beat a truism.
