Do any of the CM's have experience with deer antler for ferrules, joints or even butt caps. How does it compare to ivory in hit and/or durability. Is it difficult to work with and is it difficult to keep clean. Also, is it readily available and from where? Thanks guys, this is a great forum!!!

i have experminted with elk, moose ,and white tail antler. i like it all, i use elk for joint material. the elk i believe will not crack as bad as ivory and is much cheaper and i believe much more durable. color is the biggest problem with elk as most is not white, but a greyish color. you can find more white material in the white tail antler, but the larger pieces are harder to find.

I use it frequently & think it's beautiful. The more color & pattern contrast, the better.

haha.... I love your cues but I just don't like the look of antler........
Just look at the cues shown on the forum.... all great craftsmanship but some you love and some you hate. I also don't like that brown linen phenolic. Some CBs use it in almost every cue. SS joints.... don't like em.
No metal, no paint, nice wood, nice rings, black, white, or wood joints, points, segmented handles, not too fancy. Oh yea.... and butterflies. LOL
But that's just me...........

Thanks guys, I have some i'm going to cut up and try it. Thinking that a half joint and ferrule would look nice and hopefully play as good as Ivory.

Ithink dime and quarter for the sizes its just easier to remember when your out looking!! for 12$ a pound I can buy large sheds. Think stag,a much better material. Walrus is good(its ivory, There is plenty of Pre-banned Elephant Ivory in the states. There is ivory that is too soft and too dry! mark

Walrus has the same restrictions as elephant. My wife is native Alaskan Eskimo & can legally buy & possess it, but i'm not & can't. That's why I don't use it in cues except for the old stuff. Be careful if you are using any walrus that's white, because unless you are native Eskimo, you can potentially get in trouble.
