Dennis Orcullo and Corey are playing an even race to 5 in pocket score last I heard is 2-2.

Orcollo won, 5-3. It made me a few hundred.

By beating Corey even, you can definitely say that Orcullo has learned the game fairly adequately.

How scary is that?!

It's only a matter of time before we see Orcullo and Efren dominating the DCC one pocket finals year after year.

Makes sense that Orcullo won. I have an accustat DVD of Corey playing one hole against Putnam where he does this ridiculous break like a side of the rack smash as in 8 ball. Putnam smacked him with an 8 and out after that brain cramp break.

Later after the match in an interview Corey admits not having the patience to play the game and went so far as to say he thinks they shouldn't allow intentional scratches in the game either.

IMO with the mental frame of mind he has for one pocket, he will be hard pressed to win many sets against world class players. Not a bad thing if you don't enjoy playing the game I suppose, but never the less not the best attitude to go into a game with if you are going to play it.

It's my understanding that one-hole is not Corey's strong suit. That's why he has previously used the "smash 'em" break against good players. He said that he doesn't have the knowledge to out move a top player; so his best chance is to create runout opportunities.

Many people believe that Tony Chohan will be a real one-pocket force to reckon with in the years to come.

Yes, but didn't Corey go on to win that match? And didn't he also end up in the finals of the 2005 DCC one-pocket? Don't get me wrong, I'm not blowing the "Corey is the greatest one-holer on the planet" horn, but I personally don't think Corey has to lose to anyone at that game. IIRC, one of the DCC announcers said that Corey had been playing Efren a lot of one-hole at one time (2006, maybe?), and was playing him 8-7 or 9-8 and was not hating it.

To me, the results of this Orcullo/Deuel match-up simply suggest that Dennis has a better understanding of the game than many had previously given him credit for.

Although I am not advocating an open break in 1P, the situation you are describing had one more important detail. Corey forgot to nominate the opposite pocket when using his open break technique. Had he called the opposite pocket...he may have been just fine. He mentioned that error in the video.

He said he was inspired by watching the second ball break in 8-ball. He noticed that at certain speeds the balls would cluster on one side of the table (the side you are breaking from). He thought if there was a way to get the CB thru the maze of balls to the opposite side of the table he would have a strong 1P break. Remember, the kid that thought up the Fed Ex business model was called a fool by his professor.

It should be also mentioned that the Accustats video in question is a few years old and since then Corey's 1p game has gotten better. I would have bet on Corey vs Ocullo, so I'm glad I wasnt there last night.

race to 5 is a toss up between them. Corey could just as easily win the next set.

Don't kid yourselves, Corey CAN play one hole as good as anyone in the world . Whether he WANTS to is always the questions. Corey seems like the world's greatest player who lacks initiative. He studies the game like a PHD, changes it with his breaking methods, and then approaches it with a seemingly nonchalant attitude that makes one wonder if he really cares about winning or losing.

Corey is a genius at the table who could be the best in the world if he cared to be.

IMO

Thank you John. Corey can damn sure play some One Pocket. Don't think he can't either. You will be sadly mistaken. What this really tells me is that Dennis is learning FAST! A little over a year ago, I had to explain the game to him. He was confused about the rules and how to play.

Give him another year at it, and he may become the heir apparent to Efren.

Yeah, they would have busted me too.

corey is a champion,no doubt but hes not going to beat a lot of people playing one pocket! ive seen corey play a lot and then ive seen dennis play and as of right now corey has the worst of any game they match up to play.theres nobody out in olathe right now that will beat dennis in a long set for say 10 dimes.sorry all you svb fans,he cant win either.its a fact! if you think any different you have been misinformed and will come up short if you decide to bet against him.

That's true, because Yang isn't in olathe. ;)

Glad I wasn't aware of this Match until now ... I would have "bet the house" on Corey and now be living in my truck ... That said, Corey IS a Champion Player and I certainly hope he will demonstrate his true abilities again soon ...

I like both these guys, but I still think Dennis is a little better player. So I was quite surprised when Shane beat Dennis two sets in Vegas a month or so ago, on the small tables. Someone remind me, I think it was Eight Ball. If it was Ten Ball that's even stronger.

It was 8 ball.

The reason I liked Corey in a 1P match is the experience he has playing the game and his creativity and shotmaking. Dennis is unbelievable but lack of experience can kill a man playing 1hole. He is learning very fast, it is kinda scary.

I have to admit that I would have taken Deuel over Orcollo also at a race to 5 in one pocket.

There are some very good posts and comments on this thread. I'de like to add that the future of pool looks rosier and more spicey with guys like Orcollo learning as quick as they do. We'll have some nice battles to sweat in the future with guys like him joining the mix.

Oh I don't for one second feel Corey can't play with anyone in the world. He's a great player. In fact I was really looking forward to seeing him play straight in NJ.

My point, (hope I didn't mislead it) was that at least from what I saw there, his attitude toward one pocket was one of a sort of frustration with the game.

I strongly feel that at the highest level of play in any game / sport, that kind of thing will effect you over the long haul.

I did realize Corey forgot to call his side with that (still maintain) wacky shot but lets face it, when 15 balls are flying around any one of them can land in front of the opponents pocket. When you are playing another world class player, that more often than not will spell disaster.

Look at a world class 9 ball break. You can park that cue dead nuts center table and any one of nine balls can smack it into a pocket or to some obscure corner of the table. Add six more flying balls to that mix and I think breaking like that against these players is nothing less than a death wish.

At any rate, it was an older DVD, and one pocket patience is something that develops with time and age IMO, so if Corey is enjoying it more then he will surely be trouble since he can pocket balls and do anything with the cue.
