We met a player at the State championships this last weekend
Named Cole Dickson, some people were saying he used to be the best player in California in the early 70's. I looked him up on google and it looks like he used to buddies with Keith and RA, but i was just wondering if anybody knew him
 
Do a search of the forums. Grady has posted some good stories about Cole, and I think others joined in with personal accounts as well.

I don't know him, but I do like your avatar. I used to be amazed at how Bob Ross could turn out a beautiful picture in just 30 minutes on his show. Great way to relieve stress, just sit back and watch the guy paint.

He was all they say he was. He was a straight-shootin, rootin-tootin, pool Gunfighter. I know him since he was 16. He bet high and didnt bar anybody.

yeah, in Billings he wasn't steering clear of any cash games that's for damn sure, he had kind of a "keithish" table personality too, constantly chattering and the exaggerated arm movements.

Most of the place was crowded around his table when he had a match and he kept everybody in stitches the whole time

i saw him play in the 70 when the billiard palace in bellflower ca was upstairs. keith, ronnie allen, heart attack jack, tweedy, popcorn, cuban joe valdez and hundreds more there were a lot of players in that pool hall every year when fred whalen had his tournament. he could play with the best.

he made it in the money tournament-wise, and the person whom i assume was his backer had a big ass smile on his face;)
 
Cole Dickson was a big part of one chapter in the book 'Playing Off The Rail'. Arround page 300 the chapter called Return To Platisville, the author returns to Seattle with Cole after a successful stint with Tony A. much earlier in the book. They win again, beating Platis for five thousand more, playing one pocket. Cole Dickson was beating true bonafide champions while he was still a teenager. Supposedly he pretty much made a living in the Nevada casinos playing blackjack. Got in trouble. Accused of cheating. Said he switched cards with a friend. Anyway he was convicted and sentence to 13 years in prison, but got it suspended somehow. That part was unclear to me. Did construction work etc.. Tony made the statement that Cole would not have played as good if he had not been worn out and desperate. His part in the book was 5 or 6 pages I think....

Cole was a great player in the past, but he does not play as well anymore...as can be said for many players. He was beaten in the MT BCA state tournament by a friend of mine from Bozeman, Jeff Grinwis. Jeff is a very good player, and was the "B" division champion in the 2005 Montana Coin-Op championship, but doesn't play at, for example, Jeff Boucher's level.
Cole Dixon played in the Holiday Classic last year in Bozeman, but went two and out...not to say that he's not capable of still playing great. As a past champion, I hope his "A" game does come back...but I haven't seen it yet.
Cole lives in Billings.

Of all my experiances with pool and cards (my grandfather, backing stone cold champions as a teenager, playing poker in some of the highest buy-in NL and PL poker games in the world, having quite a few casinos refuse my blackjack action, etc.) If I ever write a book or film a documentry it will be about Cole. He is an enigma. His best pool was past him by the time I met him (around 94) but he is described very accuratly in Playing off the Rail in my opinon. Watching him warm up you can tell he is a world beater and oh my what a stroke. If you ever get the chance buy him a beer and listen to his war stories, do it. He is cut from the same cloth as guys like Keith McCready, Scotty Townsend, Cornbread Red, My Grandfather, etc. Larger than life and very Ruyenesqe (sp) like.

Jake...I know that. I was saying that Jeff Grinwis doesn't even play as well as Jeff Boucher, yet beat Cole in the tournament. Strange things happen in pool tournaments.

He was a much feared straight shooting machine in the 60's& 70's. I know him tell him to drop me a line some times.

I know Cole from many years ago. Also know Jeff Boucher, he has come to my home several times, built him a cue he loves, and enjoy playing him. I used to play with his dad, Terry, in the 80's --- one of the nicest men you could ever play -- always the gentleman. He worked a job every day --- but could play - could have beat Cole if he had spent more time playing/or was road player. The Boucher family and extended family are a bunch of die hard serious players. I didn't realize the extent of this until I started taking phone calls "I am a cousin, brother in law, etc of Boucher or my name is Boucher" for cue orders. So I think its in Jeff's blood - expect to see him do well for many years.

Cole and my husband, Mike Zimmerman went on the road together when Cole was 16 and Mike was 17. Some very good stories there!

Sorry if this is off the subject, but isn't there a tournament coming up in Bozeman in a couple of weeks? I got a call about it today and was destracted and didn't remember much about it. Thanks.
 
IRONMAN, sure is it's the 24th thru the26th at the eagles i'm about 90 % sure i'm going to be there. If you are going we shold meet up and toss a couple back
