Yup, about 30-35 years ago I was playing in a weekly Friday night poker game with friends. Low stakes ($1-2). One guy invited a friend of his who played with us for a couple years. The new guy was a fairly regular winner, and I was a somewhat suspicious, but I really didn't believe anyone would cheat his new buddies in such a low-stakes, friendly game. Long story short: he was eventually caught cheating and then it became obvious he's been doing it the whole time.

Here's where it gets interesting: my buddy that invited him asked me: "what do you want to do about it"? I said I never want to play with him again. At that point I didn't know what he was referring to. He then said "no, I mean what should we do to him? I'll pay for it because it's my fault for inviting him". I was kind of shocked we were having that conversation. I can't recall exactly how I responded, but my buddy said, "I think we should at least have both his legs broken". He then paused a little a said, "I'd be OK with worse". Holy crap he was talking about having him killed!

I had no idea my buddy was that kind of dude to have that done over such a relatively small amount of money. The point is...you may never know who the wrong guy to cheat is.

If he's dumb enuf to get hustled, perhaps this isn't the sport for him. I hear Cornhole pays well.

Couple of years at a buck or two can add up!! If you only lost say, 20 bucks a week, that's still over a grand a year!!
In our circle, dude has some IOUs forthcoming. And he would pay.

I've been in/around "friendly" games twice where even I could see that one of the players was cheating. One was very obviously dealing seconds at blackjack. The other was shorting the pot. I wonder how many I missed.

There was also a high school kid in the rec room who could do amazing things with cards. His friends wouldn't let him deal, but it didn't make much difference because he understood odds. After a while, they wouldn't let him play.

An unsuspecting kid is dumb for getting hustled? You're an idiot. There are grown ass adults who get hustled all the time, I don't see them quitting pool or re-evaluating their choice of sport.

But it's okay, there are plenty of idiots who play pool, because intelligence is not a requirement for this game, there are many pros and amateurs with very low IQ's. This is the problem with pool and why it will always have a bad stigma, equating hustling to pool.

This is like saying if your elderly grandma got scammed on the internet, maybe she shouldn't own a phone/laptop. Ridiculous take.

Also, good job spamming the thread with 6 replies in a row that adds nothing of value.

Ouch. Gosh, I guess apology's in order. Trying to put a grin on somebodys chin. That sure backfired!! Won't quit my day job.
 
if you have been around pool for long you would have seen many dumps even if you didnt recognize them.

most smart people knew if you could get a bet down on the side on a match you were the sucker.
you had to be real sharp to know how to pick your spots.

Two questions! Did you keep associating/playing with that buddy, and what ever happened to him?

A lot of sh*t blowing up on Facebook as two guys who have been traveling all over the country and taking off big scores were just blasted for arranging a dump. It appears clearly that Sam Gilmer and Thomas Haas coordinated with Joao for him to dump. They were even giving 2-3 games on the wire to up the money they could win knowing they were guaranteed the whole time. I do not share information of this nature that could so greatly damage someone's reputation without high confidence. People are returning money from the match left and right at the moment. Somehow an individual got Thomas Haas' phone and photographed the conversations clearly laying everything out in advance and showing they were all in on it. I know this happens all the time, but it is always a sad day. If you want to find it for yourselves, I left a screenshot of one of the groups with the actual messages.

An upset sister or gf is what I heard. Either way, Thomas has already admitted it and paid some of the people back, including 2k to Shane Winters. This isn't a conspiracy theory, this straight up happened. The only question I have, is how long has this been going on for.

When I search Thomas Haas vs Joao on YouTube, there are 4 action matches that come up of them playing each other. And those are just the ones that were recorded. I would say all of their matches are in question.
