My question is - why isn't it for the local pool hall? Why is it so implausible to expect people to show some respect and be quiet at a tournament? If we are really that far gone, pool has zero chance of ever 'making' it.
And all this time I thought pool was supposed to be fun !!!

Chips, peanuts unshelled and gum are now banned from all billiard events. If your a railbird and you are distracting a player, that player has the right of calling upon his fans to beat some since into you.We will be serving peanuts, gum and pop corn in the parking lot,Followed by your beating..

Having fun doesn't mean practicing impoliteness ! it might be fun to the one who is jeering at someone playing, but how about the one who is playing it for real!

Some of you need to get out more !! You've been playing by yourself in the basement way to long !!!

Sammy and Larry stopped . Not a problem but, let me ask you this what
if your playing and the table next to you is playing and the guy on the other table makes a jump shot in tourney play in the middle of your stroke ? you have to block this stuff out when shooting . Pin drop quiet is in finals play on T.V. not the local billiard hall...

You were insinuating that Earl was in the wrong for asking Sammy and Larry to stop. He shouldn't have had to ask in the first place. Larry is a professional, although I don't know who Sammy is.

Your question: One jump shot on the table next to you???? No problem....... Multiple praciticing of jump shots.... big problem. It is the disruption of the flow of things that is the biggest distraction.

People walking by the table, not stopping, not spinning 180's as they go by, not stopping to chat......no problem.

People stopping right next to the table, freezing like a deer caught in the headlights, people stopping to chat with your opponent, people passing your table but running back to the bar because they forgot to pick up their buddy's drink..... big problem.

It is the interuption of the flow of things that causes a person to miss.

It is common courtesy in most pool halls for people who know pool, not to chat with your opponent while you are gambling with them or playing in a tournament.

I've seen Buddy Hall admonish a person for continuously sipping on a glass full of ice, all the while clinking those ice cubes in the hard styrene class after each sip of melting ice water. It just amazes me that more people don't see these type of things as distractions. I guess those who don't see them as distractions either aren't distracted or have never played at a very high level of play or seen what it takes to continuously play at a high level of play

Someone on AZ once mentioned that there should be separated rooms for bangers that think having fun is hooting and hollering and in general cutting up, rooms for serious players who enjoy running more than three fookin balls and a separate room for dates.

Some people don't relate with the other groups and show them very little respect even though each group's interests vary greatly. A few people even think that having manners is something that should be left to newspaper's Ms. Manners only.

You have a real good way of taking things out of context and making it somthing it's not ! I'll bet your a real hoot in person !!
Maybe you should stay in your basement !!!

Taling about eating chips, a bit off topic here.

I once played with a guy who liked to eat chip, lick his fingers, and then with all the grease and salt and what not on his fingers, he would shake my hand, hold and rub the cue ball and all other balls, talk to me and others and taking forever while trying to rack...

Not to mention the noise of him eating.

Then when I finally got down to shoot, he would put his hand in and out of the bag, lick his fingers right in front of me, make a big mess around his seat. It was really disgusting.

He even tried to hold and test hit my cue once when I was racking.

I told him, "please do not touch my cue."

He replied, 'What? You are not being friendly?":).

You ever try bowling while there is a tournament or league going on? The house people will make sure you are placed very far away from them regardless of your skill level. They just want to avoid any possible distractions for their serious paying patrons.

Same goes for Golfing or any other game/sport, why should pool be different?

Agreed, he could have handled it better on his end of it. However, there are alot of people who like to jump on the bandwagon of saying Earl has mental problems etc.....
Strickland is one of the greatest 9 ball players ever. Period.
There are alot of jackasses out there who like to try to push him into blowing up for their own entertainment at tournaments. They are the ones who should be shoved out the door for their actions. Crinkling a bag of chips during a tournament of any kind is disrespectful, and then to make the comment the woman made should have gotten her 86'd immediately.
Earl is a hot head, he admits to that much. But poking and prodding a player to see them get pissed, because you think it is funny... that is THE problem with Earl, its not Earl himself.
There should be more professionalism at tournaments. That goes for the players AND the spectators.

I'm presently watching golf, and its easy to see on the sidelines people letting the crowd know when to be quite and still. If the tournament promoter or director would announce to the crowd before the start of each match about showing respect (noise and distractions) for the players during play that would be amazing. About the only thing I've ever heard a TD announce was no flash cameras and silence cell phones. IMHO the TD is at fault by not dealing with the situation before, during and after its occurance. John Q public has no clue about the noise, why, they are not informed, why, its obvious.

he's just giving some excuse to the person's (potato chip girl) impolite behavior which cannot be allowed in the game of pool. Who wouldn't react right after receiving a comment like that from a person who is only given a privilege to watch a game? she's not the boss or anything for that matter and is not involved in the game and does what it takes whenever she pleases. I guess what he is suggesting is that it is ok for that woman to make some rude comments and crucify Earl for just walking out of it.

remember that such impolite crowd behaviors can only be allowed on which sports it is being tolerated. if that person thinks and does as he/she pleases of what he/she considers fun in any sport that he/she wanted to watch, then that person has a backtrack mindset.

I'd like to make another suggestion for people regarding tournament etiquette.....For Earl's next match, even though he had withdrawn from the tournament, everyone had to wait twenty minutes while Earl was "put on the clock", because he never told anyone he wasn't coming back. My suggestion is that if you decide for any reason that you are leaving and not returning.....MAKE SURE TO TELL THE TD! Several people lost their first match and never told Shannon they were leaving, so everyone got to sit there and wait for them to be put on the clock, and then wait 15 minutes before they were forfeited! Meanwhile the person who left is already home watching football. Please just let the TD know when you forfeit.

You sound like you must be one of those bangers that can't make three fooking balls. :D :D

You know, I just realized something. Some people here who think Earl was out of line may just never have been to a real pool room, or tourney. At just about every room I frequent, that lady would have been "informed" by the rail about her indiscretions...

However, I do agree that the woman was incredibly rude, in a fairly quiet venue, to deny Earl's request. Dan Louie asked a spectator not to eat or crinkle her chip bag and it was granted, because in the quiet of that tomb, you really could hear it and were forced to focus on that racket! :p

Earl compounded the wrongdoing, by forfeiting.

Agreed. Earl showed a lack of respect for the game and the tournament by walking out. Based on reports of his recent behavior, if it had not been for the chip lady, it could have been something or someone else.

The chip eating lady definitely showed her lack of class by refusing to stop when and should have been asked to leave.

I saw Earl quit in the middle of a finals match in milwaukee some years back against corey d. He didn't like the way scotty was racking the balls. I think it boiled down to the fact that he couldn't make a ball on the break and corey broke and ran everything. Either way I think earl is the phil helmuth of pool. Snot nosed little kid........who plays too good to act like this.

After watching Earl shark Allen Hopkins several years ago by attempting to make Hopkins look like a cheat (when Hopkins was the head of the Pro tour) I concluded that Earl is an old time shark and have no respect for the man. He did throw Hopkins off his game and won the match.

Passing out free chips at his matches would be a service to the game. It is a shame the man can shoot extremely well but there is – or should be – more to the game. What comes around, goes around.

BTW - if you (the general you) think Earl is a great player, I know a lot more about you ! So I often ask at a hall what peple think about Earl. Nothing like using a man's tools against himself.

AMEN!
I don't know about anyone else here, but I can instantly judge a person's character by how they play pool. IMO, any good player that sharks or plays dishonest is a coward. Earl is simply reaping what he has sown. I've recently seen a video of him on youtube where he touched a ball while shooting and the ref didn't see it because he was behind Earl. When the opponent called the foul, Earl basically said 'too bad the ref didn't see it'. How can someone who plays such good pool be such a cheat? Is he just in it for the money?
