Earl vs The Crowd

You're right, he does not hang out at the pool room because he's scared that somebody might challenge him to a match and whoop his butt, which is what happened tonight.

Lots of good it did him, huh, all that resting that he had. Well, he's got a lot more resting coming up!!!

Isn't your boy the one that Donny Mills spotted the 7 and 8 and beat real bad earlier this week?

Edit: I guess I was wrong, it was Gomez that Donny spanked.

Let's just keep it focused on TOURNAMENT wins. No one has a record like Earl's. Earl won the US Open and the World 9 Ball more times than anyone in history. The point of all this is that even if Earl doesn't win most tournaments he plays in now he still holds the greatest record in the two greatest tournaments. None of the Filipinos can touch him in that regard.

Not Efren, not Busty, nor any of the up coming players. All of them have a long long way to go to even threaten Earl's record.

And furthermore, ALL of them know that Earl CAN STILL beat any of them in any given race. And if he has a flashback and plays like his younger self then he is likely to beat them badly and quickly.

Go Earl!

You're barking up the wrong tree with me, Bayawak.

I'm the first one to root for the Filipino players at all times, but I think hanging out in the pool room all night long, when you are competing in a week-long tournament is not a good thing.

Of course, since most of the Filipino pool players are backed/staked in every single event they play in, they probably only get a whopping 25 percent of the winnings after it's all chopped up. So, in that sense, who can blame them?

Play your heart out all week long to put money in other people's pockets. Dance, monkey, dance!

I think Earl has given us a lot of pool history already. He deserves to be respected. There are times he has shown us unpredictable attitude, but that could be because he is so much into a match that a drop of a pin will set him off. Records are meant to be broken but I think his will take a loooooonnnng time.

Actually JAM, the players who play for Bugsy are in no way monkeys dancing for their owner. They have their expenses covered - and keep 60%, not 25%, of their winnings. So these guys are in no way only putting money in other peoples pockets - they keep a lot of the money for themselves.

Another issue is that they do so many savers, that they may end up owing money:wink:

Man, you're preaching to the choir here. There's also a few stakehorses in the States who "help" the Filipino players when they arrive. In fact, there's several well-known Filipino backers who do nothing but that, back them in tournaments. If you think these stakehorses are doing it just for the privilege of hanging out with the the Filipino champions, you are wrong. It's a money-making venture.

I know all about the savers. The Americans do it too. They try to help their friends on the tournament trail meet expenses. It's a practice that the lay pool public doesn't like, but to the pro player, it's a way of life.

What fuels Earl's fire is interacting with the crowd. The more they are pulling for him, the better he plays. He's actually a nice guy to those who know him -- I mean REALLY know him! :)

Next time you see Earl, just say, "Hey, Earl, USA, all the way." I'll guarantee you that will put a big smile on his face! :grin-square:

Jennie, He's actually a nice guy to those who don't know him. He attended and won 2 or 3 consecutive Joss stops in Rochester, you and lefty were there. On all those occasions he had nothing but positive upbeat interacton with whoever was nearby. He looked my way more than a few times and asked a question or made a comment. Initially, I was afraid to even acknowledge him fearing I'd say the wrong thing. Never happened. I remember Earl, Keith and Alex all bantering with each other and the crowd. It was priceless.

Remember the finals when Keith breaks the case game, makes a ball, squats the cueball perfect and then the 3 ball travels around the table and kicks the cue ball in the side. Keith's eyes were spitting lightning bolts. He reared back and was taking a swing at the table with his break cue. Earl is screaming "stop, don't do it" and Keith calmed down. Earl says something like I'll probably not get out anyway, but he did for the win.

Earl is a character, it's just that he dosen't seem to be playing a role as much as taking direction from the voices inside. Most of the time those voices are a sincere caring individual.

best regards.........Paul

this statement makes no sense. You fail to realize that if it weren't for the backers then the players would make NO money. It's kind of like when someone goes to the bank and takes out a business loan in order to make money. If it weren't for the bank the person could not start the business. I guess the person is "dancing" for the bank to make money?

If that is the case then I dance a jig for many banks every day. I make the money I do because I owe the banks so much. If not for them then I could never have done what I have to make money.

What she's saying does make sense....

All sorts of loan institutions out there.....some good-some bad. Same with backers...

You don't do business with a Payday loan company, do you? Hell no.... why pay 40% interest??

Some of the backers fall into this category.....shady, underhanded, greedy, take you're last dollar type.

Pretty sure that's what she means, and I agree.

I agree with your points, but it's the same as in banking. If you don't have good credit then you have to go with secondary loan companies and pay a higher percentage. If the players don't like a backing deal then they shouldn't do it unless that's all they can get. People of course don't like to pay a high % for any loan, but if it's all they can get then it's not a bad deal if you want the money bad enough.

When it comes to the Filipinos, especially Bugsy, I will say that it is the players that has the best of it.

This was how it was done 2 years ago. I don't know if that has changed or not.

Bugsy Promotion is paying them a monthly salary, just so they can be able to play pool every day and practice. Even if it goes months between tournaments, they still get their monthly salary. This way they are not depending on another job to survive.

Every now and then they put them into a money match, and let the player keep a % of the winning. This can range from 20 - 40 %, depending on how successful the player has been in the past few money matches. Players like Orcullo and Alcano obviously has a high percentage, because they win more often than they lose.

In between the tournaments, practice and the few scheduled money matches, the players are free to play as many money matches at nights as they want, on their own money or with someone else money. I have personally backed some of the Filipinos in such matches.

Then, when it is time for a tournament, let's say the US Open, the player will get his flight, room and entry covered, money for food and he will keep 60 % of his winning!

If that's bad for the players, then I must be stupid for not seeing it.

Bugsy Promotions are using their profit (their 40 % from tournament winnings) to put more players in action.

When Alcano won the World Championship they used their share to sign more players, hire a coach and send more players to more tournaments.

Bugsy Promotions is depending on the big stars (Alcano, Orcullo, Gomez) to produce income so they can pay monthly's salaries to the rest of the stable and send them to events. Bugsy consists of 25 players. They also have some other businessprojects, like promoting and organizing events, sponsors etc. to make income.

Roy, if what you explained is the real deal oatmeal well how can any player go wrong. Earning a salary, getting staked, and paying for all expenses at tourny's, wow what a deal for all involved. Now thats how to keep pool alive...

I'd say that 99% of the American members on this forum really appreciate and respect the great filipino players, even though in some cases, we root harder for our home grown (Earl) heros.

YOU obviously have NO RESPECT for the greatest tournament 9 baller of all time, 6 (SIX!) time World 9 Ball Champion and 5 (FIVE) time U.S. Open 9 Ball Champion, Earl Strickland.

Here's something for you to think about...Earl has more U.S. Open wins than all the great Flipino players combined! Efren won his one & only in 1994, Alex (the CANADIAN Filipino won his in 2005.

There's more....Earl has as many World 9 Ball championships as, you guessed it, all the great Filipino players COMBINED! Parica has 1, Reyes has 1, Luat has 1, Alex has 1 and Alcano has 1 and I'll count Orcollo's win last July in the Mideast as a legitimate title, so he has 1.

You're certainly entitled to your opinion, but I can guarantee you that not many feel the way you do.

Congrats to Bay VanVan Corteza.
Great to see Earl playing well again.

Now THAT is a very classy way to root for your favorite as well as respect the other player! Good job Joey!
And Corteza has many fans here. It's nice to see him growing into a powerhouse the last few years.
