Earl vs The Crowd

This is by far the best form I have seen Strickland in, in years. It's obvious he has come to this tournament prepared. I am however concerned about him paying too much attention to the people in the crowd. I think if you are in the zone, you can't see or hear the audience in attendance. But if you are not focused you will notice a guy coughing 15 rows back. If Earl can keep that strong concentration at the table his problems with hecklers in the crowd will be over.....Gooooo Earl.................

What fuels Earl's fire is interacting with the crowd. The more they are pulling for him, the better he plays. He's actually a nice guy to those who know him -- I mean REALLY know him! :)

Next time you see Earl, just say, "Hey, Earl, USA, all the way." I'll guarantee you that will put a big smile on his face! :grin-square:

He's got just a little of that pro American spirit in him. Guess you could say he's a Patriot.

Van Van might get thumped tonight if the crowd gets behind The Pearl!

I'll GUARANTEE you that Earl ain't been hanging out at the pool room all night long gambling. He's resting up to be all that he can be at the pool tournament.

Some things are more important than money to some players, and then there's other players who don't give a hoot about tin cups.

Earl very much knows he's one of the very greatest, if not THE greatest 9 baller ever. His legacy is very important to him. He speaks about how Mosconi's viewed all these years later. He knows pool history. And I feel like Earl is aware that the clock has somehow ben turned back yet again for him and now that he see's that light thru the opening door...look out!

I don't know if I've ever wanted any other player to win a tournament like I want Earl to win this tournament. 6 U.S. Open 9 Ball Championships will go very nicely with his 6 World 9 Ball Championships.

Win it or lose it, he's already an icon. Winning it solidifies the legend even more.

Well stated Terry! I think that's part of what makes a champion. They have something about them, that you always want them to win. Earl certainly has that besides being a world beater.............

He's also just plain happy. I think what some people infer as Earl yelling at the crowd is just Earl's jocularity, not hatred. Last night it looked like he was flipping out, but I think he was just messing around. Personally, I want Earl to win this thing like its going to be the last US Open ever. I think hes gonna have a tough road coming up, despite his great performance so far. I wish him all the best and would love to see him bring home a sixth title. Much like the DCC One Pocket is Efren's tournament, US Open 14.1 was Miz's Tournament, the US Open 9 ball is Earl's tournament, by far.

If you ever saw Sigel play he was always talking to somebody in the crowd as a way to relax with a side effect of possibly throwing off the opponent. Earl's deal is similar but perhaps more entertaining.

you are most correct my good man! Mike played in the annual 14.1 at our room here in PA years ago, and I used to get out from behind the counter to sweat his matches. More then a few times Mike picked me to be the designated "go to" talker guy during his matches. He just wanted someone to bounce things off of while he was playing. To be that close to a Legend was a real good trip for me.

The most fun was going out and playing 18 with Mike and the crew......I came from out behind the counter and shot 77....Mike liked me even more after that and started talking FISHING! :)

good old times!

Earl hears everything LOL,

I also saw the Jacoby tourney in Burlington and I was sititng very close to the table Earl was playing the finals on. At one point he played a safe on the one and the cue went two rails back towards Earl. Well the cue hit the tenball and wouldn't you know it got knocked in for a win (pure luck). I started to chuckle to myself and spoke loud enough for him to hear me, "Nice safe Earl." He turned around with a big smile on his face and said, "Just like Efren."

MarkGW, I'm concerned about you being a NIT. How many threads do I need to tell you that you've got action. Borrow some money from friends or get a paper route and step up.

You're right, he does not hang out at the pool room because he's scared that somebody might challenge him to a match and whoop his butt, which is what happened tonight.

Lots of good it did him, huh, all that resting that he had. Well, he's got a lot more resting coming up!!!

Youre right he lost, kinda like Alcano and Parica etc etc...everyone loses sometime or another...let's see one of your boys win it 5 times.

Let's see your Earl go to the pool hall and give out spots that these Filipino boys are giving out and still managed to win, huh! I didn't think so..

You obviously need a history lesson, but I wont take the time to educate your ignorant ass. The spots these guys are giving now are NOTHING like the spots Earl used to give. Earl regularly gave out 1/2 a set plus what they are giving...you got a lot of country pride but please remember theyre not the first to do it.
