Excuse me for being out of the loop but I have seen the name Genomachino here in this forum. I take it that he is the aiming guy. I also know the name Gene the machine. I have played the later years back and am wondering are they two different guys or the same? Just wondering. Maybe someone can clear this up for me. How would their games compare to each other?

does he reside in nj?

I'm not sure where his was from. The Gene that I played in the west coast was on the road from the east coast. At that time in the late 70's he was about 30 years old dark hair, medium built. It seems that there must be a number of machines out there.

Geno

Genomachino is Gene Albrecht from Chippewa Falls,WI. Heckuva player and all round good guy. He used to come visit his buddy Hal Hawkins in Eau Claire a lot when Hal had London Road Billiards and Geno had his Bar up in Chippewa. Never knew if Gene Lowe was called the Machine or not.

I seem to recall that Gene the machine using the name of Cooper. Anyone?

Gene the Machine was Gene Cooper a super bar player in the 70's. I am sure others have been called that, but Gene was known all over the country by the name Gene the Machine before a lot of these guys ever played the game.

I think I can clear this up.............

Hi there,

I play backgammon on the internet and poker also. I needed a screen name and tried many different ones associated with my name and were already being used. One I tried was genethemachine, another was genothemachine. After about 5 attempts I finally came up with genomachino and that was not being used. So i used this for my screen name on these sites.

Then about a year ago I discovered the wonderful world of AZ Billiards. I needed a screen name and just used the same name, genomachino.

When I traveled around the country teaching Perfect Aim things kind of happened naturally. I would go into a pool hall and players would be saying. There's the Perfect Aim guy. Then when they saw my screen name of genomachino they would make a reference to me as genomachino or sometimes gene the machine.

So I got 4 names all of a sudden. Gene Albrecht, genomachino, gene the machine and the Perfect Aim Guy. It's all the same.

There are 2 other guys that they called Gene The Machine over the years. One was Gene Lowe out of Minneapolis and the other was Gene Cooper and I think he was out of Florida.

Gene Lowe was one of the top players in Minneapolis for many years but has kind of drifted away from the pool scene in recent years.

Years back while I was playing on the road I ran into Gene Cooper. He was out doing what I was doing and wasn't to interested in playing another road player. I guess that's what was smart back then to just make money.

I thought it would be kind of fun just because my name was Gene also. I played everyone I could back then. No internet and no camera phones. The only way your action got queered was by word of mouth.

Now if 2 players like us played it would be all over the place. Things have really changed. Internet and all.

As far as Gene Lowe I think i always had the best of it and the players in minnesota would also pretty much have the same opinion.

As far as Gene Cooper. We never played and I never saw him play so I guess I can't help you there. I heard he played real sporty though. It would have been real fun to match up.

Someone else will have to help you with that question.

Hope this helps. Have a great Day. Geno...........

When I first started with AZ about a year ago I needed a screen name. I wanted to use something simple and thought

I think Gene Cooper was from Alabama. He lived in Florida for a while and even dated Miss Florida. You may know her as Nancy Stafford the Water bed city girl and from the Matlock TV show. All Gene had to do was look at a girl and he had a date. He was one smooth operator. Man could he play on a bar table. I only saw him lose to Joe Salazar, thats about it.

Every state probably has a Gene the Machine. We had one in Iowa too. He passed a few years back, but before he did he told me of his days playing Mizerak in the Quad Cities (Iowa) when the former was in college.

Hal the Cuemaker?

Hmm,I don't know. I hope so. Maybe Geno would know. I have never met anyone with more knowledge of wood for cues than Hal. If he is making cues, they will be awesome,I'm sure. Geno may not remember me when I worked for Hal and Sue back in Eau Claire at London Road Billiards.

is gene cooper the guy they wanted to talk to in the mississippi murder? i have no idea who he is or even if that is who they have an interest in. i just remember a photo with something cooper. i may also be i way left field here.

Gene the Machine is probably like Fast Eddie, there is probably at least one in every town over 50,000 people.

Hal makes all my shafts.............

Hi there,

And i do remember.

Hal has a shed full of wood that most cue makers would die to have. hal showed me about a year ago and I couldn't believe it.

My cue that I use is made by Cameron Mathy out of Kansas City. I tried to use something else about a month ago and that's when I realized how well Cam's cue plays. I go through alot of shafts though because I'm alway sanding on them.

In fact I need a couple more shafts right now. When Hal hawkins makes these shafts for me they seem to play almost the same. Now that's good quality.

Cams shafts are good too but he's in Missourri and I'm in wisconsin with my buddy hal.

Anyway, give me a call some time. 715-563-8712:cool:

That's the Gene "The Machine" we all knew. He was a good player, particularly on bar tables, but not a great player. When he came to the West Coast he crossed paths with Jimmy Reid and got bar-b-qued. Unfortunately, I wasn't with Jimmy at the time. I ran into Jimmy a few days later and he told me about playing some guy who they called Gene "The Machine."

He thought it was real funny, saying stuff like, "I sent the machine to the repair shop." Or, "I think the machine needs an oil change." Jimmy was like that, he delighted in beating people who thought they were good. Gene Cooper was a high level shortstop but not on a par with top bar table players like Matlock, Jr. Weldon, Joe Salazar or Bakersfield Bobby. On a big table, he was only an average player. He was well known country wide though. He got around pretty good. I would put him on a par with Billy Ray Suden as a player.

Gene Cooper was a tall lanky wild looking dude. He seemed to add electric to the air though and anywhere gene went things seemed to happen.
He just had "it".

He is how I met Gene....

So my buddy and I are driving to Dothan Al and happen to see a couple brokedn down. We slow partly because its the right thing to do and partly due to the female part of the duo seemed to be showing skin and was doing it well.
We turned around and went back. turned back around and came up behind them walking. now we see Gene at about 6'4-6'5 weighing about 170. His hair was kind of like a wild pompadour at the end of a three day party.
We didnt stop :sorry:

We stop off at my parents then head to the pool room. As soon as we walk in I hear Scotty townsend and someone woofing. My buddy and I about laugh ourselves to death seeing its Gene. We thought he didnt know who he was dealing with or that there was a tournament going on that weekend.
Well shortly thereafter they start playing and even with a house cue I
start to see that he can play. He and Scotty were playing even and it went back and forth but Scotty came out ahead.

Later gene was trying to tell a local where he car brokedown and was trying to get a ride. Real deadpan and serious he turned to my buddy and
said "hey, tell this guy it where my car is. You know the spot. Right where you turned around and rode right by!"
A few of us that I had told the story to died laughing and Gene just smiled and said he was joking.

Like I said he seemed to have alot of charisma. I am not sure about his ranking but in my rankings I have him above the shortstop level. Of course I have shortstop below and A player though. Some have it right above and A with a AA(top regional) guy next in line.

That was just one of the crazy things that happened that weekend. A partner in a partners nineball game had a heartattack and his partner just tried to get him out of the way enough to finish the rack "while the docs were on their way". Then later said 'if he is dead i get to be my own partner"!

This was early 90s and the last I ever heard about gene was that he was living in north alabama and had stopped playing pool. I believe he was left some money or a business.
