You gotta check out this publication from 23 years ago. Jay Helfert starts things off in it. At the end is a scathing open letter to the BCA from a major sponsor when the BCA implemented "call shot" in 9 ball when the game was enjoying fabulous growth. I guess it didn't last long???

And inbetween these 2 writings, oh man, the names, pic's and events are absolute gold!

What strikes home with you in this?
Enjoy!

I think I have this mag somewhere. I have to look for it.

What caught my attention was the article entitled "Promoter Monroe Brock Killed -- Clyde Childress Cancelled."

Lexington, Kentucky - The pool world was stunned by the news that Monroe Brock, promoter of the annual Clyde Childress World 9-ball Open, was killed shortly after midnight on Sunday morning, January 18, 1987.

Brock was killed by a bullet shot through the bedroom window of his home in Berea, Kentucky. Police in Lexington, according to initial reports, have no motive for the killing or suspects in custody.

Monroe Brock was 36 years old and is surived by his wife Dinah, children Kristie and Monte...

Did they ever catch the killer? This is horrible, a 36-year-old man shot in the bedroom of his home, "no suspects in custody." :(

Yeah, that struck me too. I was hoping someone would be able to elaborate on this tragic murder.

A couple other things struck me.

- Sigel and Balukas were dominating most every even mentioned
- Great shots of young DiLeberto, Sigel, Hopkins, etc
- some cool old advertisements
- the largest ever pool loss I ever heard is discussed, and it was $3.6 million by Maximillian II, the ruler of Bavaria. That was in 1704!!! They deposed the fool over this. I wonder what the NPV of that is!!!

And that was back when $3.6 million meant something. :D

Thanks for posting this. Wonderful stuff!

Best,
Brian kc
P.S. I'm finally getting to read "Pool Wars". I'm sure I'll get to the chapter very soon where Jay recalls this Maximillian story, and how he was sweatin' & bettin' it on the rail. That Helfert fellow was everywhere!

No, I don't believe they ever caught Monroe's killer. I liked Monroe, but he did make some enemies. He was a bar owner, bookie and sometimes tush hog of sorts. He was kinda like Joe Burns and carried a gun that he liked to wave around when someone pissed him off. He was known to have pistol whipped more than one person who gave him some lip. He was definitely a "friend to pool players". He staked Buddy Hall and Earl for a while up until his death. His Clyde Childress Memorial Tournaments were about the best tourneys I'd been to up until the DCC. Gary and I went to a couple of them. A lot of pool players mourned his death but I guess there were some locals who weren't as fond of him as we were. RIP Monroe!

Nope. As of today it is still a cold case.

Thanks Matt for putting up this piece for all of us to view, I enjoyed the read!

What caught my eye was Mike Seigel winning a $40,000 tournament payed in $10.00 bills, that was a large pill of $...., and that Seigel ,Hopkins , & Varner were so dominant.

I just wish that pool could ketch a gear and enjoy a growth like it did back then!

It was a "gimmick" event that Jack Johnston and Resorts put together. The entry fee was only $100 with $40,000 added! But all the added money went to first place. Jack liked it that way. What it accomplished with the huge first prize, was to lure 356 pool players to Atlantic City, so Jack wasn't so dumb after all. Basically $40,000 for first and $35,600 for the next 31 spots in the money. We paid the top 32.

No question Mike and Nick made a deal before the finals. They were good buds anyway. They may have chopped it down the middle but I couldn't say that publicly. Pat Fleming and I co-directed this one and they had to play it in two different ball rooms, one down the hall from the other. I would position a ref in the far ball room to come and get me if there was a problem. About two or three times a day I would go down there to make sure all the matches were going okay.

I wonder what happened with the telecasts from this event. I'd love to see them. Something hilarious happened there with Weenie Beenie that I'll never forget. This story has to be in my next book.

Thanks for the link, the article on cuemaking from Colorado Slim was actually part of a discussion I had this weekend while looking at one of his (Slim's) cues that was actually in the star design shown in the article.
