Golf on snooker table.

Back in the mid sixties when I first started playing the only games were snooker and golf. The two halls downtown only had snooker tables. One may have had one pool table but it got no play. We always played golf with snooker balls probably because that's all the balls there were. Now I see one place in town where they play golf with pool balls. Larger balls of course and I suppose tougher. So please weigh in and tell me what is the more common thru this great land. Could be a regional thing so let me know where you did or now played golf. Also your thinking and rationale for larger or smaller balls. Does rail height become an issue? Thanks in advance.

Here in Calgary they use pool balls, but they are not larger, they are sets of pool balls made for the snooker tables or the snooker cut 5x10 tables and they are the same size as the snooker balls. The reason they use pool balls is that it is easy to keep track of. The cueball is the solid color and the object ball is the stripe, aka the 1-ball is the cueball for the 9-ball, the 2-ball is the cueball for the 10-ball, ect... You can quickly see who is what on the table and shoot the proper shots based on the layout.

In the US, it was far more common to use pool balls on a snooker table playing golf. To my recolleciton, the rationale for using the the larger balls was to place greater emphasis on strategy and a bit less on shotmaking.

Golf

Back in the sixties, huh? :p

As I recall, back in '67 and '68 in Lewisville, Texas, we used pool balls to play golf. Nowadays, here in New Mexico, my good friend has a 5 x 10 Olhausen snooker table with step cushions. He's a golf nut, and only uses snooker balls. One day, just for grins, I took my pool balls over to give them a try. We played one game with them and went back to the snooker balls.

The big balls didn't play right off the step cushions.

Here in Nashville it's played on a 6x12 snooker table, with snooker balls...groups as large as 8 people at a time, mostly old timers :p...not my game, but I like to watch!!

Whoa, so you are playing a golf game with each player having both their own object ball and their own cue ball?

Steve <--- still can't really figure out the game (or games) of golf...

Hey, I resemble that remark. LOL. Yes it is a geezer game but we have several young whippersnappers who mix it up with us also. Now even on that bigger table I would pass on the eight player thing. I need some room for some of my fancier shots! LOL. Golf is quite like tubule, that Lebanese stuff. You either love it or hate it. Having grown up with golf and snooker, I do have a place in my heart for the snooker table. I play all games, but one pocket is my new love. Had the pleasure of watching Bill Stroud play one hole about a month ago. Bill plays strong and got third in the nine ball tourney. Golf does get me a little out of stroke for other games.

In superior Wisconsin golf is played mostly with snooker balls but a couple of guys use pool balls. Usually played with two players ( each with their own ball) and one cue ball. Some times three handed.

Hey, I resemble that remark. LOL.

Was just ribbing ya ... no harm intended!! Seems most of the golfers are from a different era :) I love watching them play. Some of the 2 and 3 rail shoots on the 12 footer are just amazing...

Never played golf with more than 1 cue ball...

Most places I've played use snooker size pool balls (#s 1-15).

Multi-player ring games are common.

Rules vary a great deal from place to place.

Yes, different rules at AAA compared to Chesters. And if that isn't enough they use the snooker at AAA and pool balls at Chesters. Better players by far at Chesters but too much smoke for me. Chesters wins out with great food, beer, cards, dominoes and six Diamond bbs for league play. AAA has none of that stuff but comes thru with more than one snooker table and a 3 cushion table and no smoking!

how else would it be played?

each person has a stripe ball for the ob and a solid of the same color for the cb. the most poplular rules where i'm from go like this:
- each person draws a pea to determine order
- played on a 6x12 with snooker sized balls with american pool ball markings
- first hole is to the left of the shooter (green pocket) and the rest are in clockwise order 1-6.
- we spot skittles on the yellow green brown blue pink all the skittles are maple colored except for one that goes on the pink spot which is black. they represent hazards. maple skittles add one stroke to your score, black ones are worth 5. hence if you play a shot and are unlucky enough to mow down all the skittles you would take 9 extra strokes onto your score.
- we usually play rail after contact as well so the cueball or object ball, or opponents object ball or cueball has to hit a rail. this get's tough if you're hooked, especially with skittles around, guy's have been known to have to break out a calculator.
- when any foul strokes are played, the shooter has to pick up his object ball and cueball and start over from the beginning behind everone else in the same order.

the one thing about skittle golf is you kinda have to be picky about who you play with, mind you while there are no friends and everyone goes after low man, you always get the one idiot that will chase you around the table trying to screw you for what you did to him earlier.

even though i never had any patience for this game, i did enjoy it, it was good raucous fun.

we play a different version of golf here.

it all started with a room owner that sponsored one of my teams. after our league matches a couple of us would stay and play golf well after closing time with the owner who taught us the game.

he has since closed so my team plays out of another room now. the 3 of us continued playing golf at our new location and some other players started joining us.

we have had up to 8 people playing at 1 time and yes it has gotten wild a time or 2.

sometimes the owner is lenient and stays open after closing time letting us finish the game. as i said we dont play this until after our league matches are over. btw table time is free before league play and also after until closing time.

In the mid-sixties I played golf occasionally on a 10 ft. snooker table with snooker balls and as I recall we only used the white ball as a cue ball. It's a good game.

These are probably the traditional rules:

Golf on 5x10, TIGHT POCKETS

Our local golf game:

2 1/8 inch balls, 2 3/16 corner pockets.

one white cb/colors or red as each players ball

draw peas for order/generally a ring game

#1 hole is right bottom corner at the 'D' end. In sequence 1 thru 6(out hole) clockwise around table starting with #1.

A game of shifting priorities as players(ring game) move from offense to defense, from 'going for your hole' to feeding the cue ball to the following player so that he has options to shoot, run from, take out the leader.

These moves are not always clearcut. Especially, when the 'sellout' who shoots before the winner pays double, things can get heated when someone is left swinging in the wind in the end game. The often heard 'I was holding my man' is offered up as the reason that no help was rendered to keep the leader from winning.

Good game with the right group of players.

Different rules, at different places re. bad hits(cost price of the game), 'hooked' (where both edges of ob is not hittable), lifts after a foul(unless kicking), number of hickeys for different fouls, etc.

4 or five players seems about right.

a lot of bunting/predicting and playing the table rolloff at such slow speeds is crucial.

To some, it's considered ''group therapy''....

LMAO!!! You would say that. I guess some would consider it just that, but it is often counter productive.
i remember you got in the game with us once out at the Pool Hall. I remember you lagging for the one as if it were a 9 ball break. LOL!
hey they had that game in the Springs at the Bowling alley with pool balls didn't they?

snooker sized balls where I played

They used snooker sized balls on the golf tables where I played. They were "golf tables" almost the only thing played on them and the pockets were ridiculous, made the pockets on a Riley championship table look like barbox buckets. The tables weren't to be had in the mornings and early afternoons, the daily golf games were sacred.

I played in a ring game at the bowling alley in the Springs many years ago on a road trip. Jr. Harris was in the game and when he was near the out hole and it looked like he was a cinch to win, one of the guys rolled the cue ball over to sell out to his man so Jr. could not win. They did not like Jr. much.

Only loser I booked playing golf on the whole trip was to Cigar Sam at Family Fun Center in Denver. Guy kicked the side holes too good for me.

I heard there was a better player around who was in jail, and I knew better than to play Medina anything.
