Good news about the U.S. Open

Sorry you feel that way Chris. Yes, it ain't golf money, but not much is these days. There are many sports that pay far less and have much greater expenses. I'll start with local car racing, motorcycle racing, snow skiing, water skiing, trap shooting, horseshoe pitching, volleyball, badminton, table tennis and many more that are considered professional sports.

By the way, you don't have to beat all 220 (or 256) players to win. You just have to beat eight in a row and you'll be just fine. Remember, you chose pool, it didn't choose you. See you in October.

that is true 8 in arow of the best players in the world good luck.
the money in pool is a joke thats why im on my way out.
i love to play but the money is a joke.

I assume as we get closer to the actual event there will be more information, but do we know any details about streaming yet? (Yes, I'm a noob at this. Proud of it, and not ashamed to ask questions, heh)

I would never be able to get the time off to actually go and watch in person, much as I would love to. Thanks.

For a long time Pat Fleming and his Accustats crew produces many dvd's of great matches in the Arena and has been live streaming it too for years now !

I agree but I don't know what to do about it. What are you thinking about doing if you quit pool?

I haven't been to the US OPEN since 1979. First place was $5000.

Jay, which women (past champions) are elligible for a free ride? Balukas?
That would be interesting. But it won't happen.

Anyway, I think this year's will be historic. I'll try to make it and bring Ragbug74 along.

Balukas yes, but very doubtful she will come, except to watch. Others I believe are Loree Jon, Belinda B. Campos, Robin Dodson and maybe Ewa Laurence. I'm really not sure. I do know that Belinda said she would play.

I would love to see Jean balukas win it, unlikely but it would be a historic event.

If she ever was going to come out of retirement this would be huge for pool and the US Open. I don't think she ever will play tournaments again, the desire is long gone. She has nothing to prove. She has nothing to gain and much to loose at this point in her life. She went out on top and you got to like that. Johnnyt

Just got off the phone with Barry Behrman, the creator and promoter of the U.S. Open (for only 35 years now). All sanction requirements have been taken care of with the WPBA and many of the top women will be in this years event. Even the great Allison Fisher has contacted Barry to say that she will be playing.

This is shaping up as one of the most exciting U.S. Open's ever! A full field of 256 players is very possible, with many of them being ladies. I'm guessing 25-30 women players. Personally I'd love to see at least one or two women go deep, like maybe final sixteen or twenty four. And I think it's very possible. Barry thinks a women could make the final four. Hey, it could happen!

Plus, as many of you know, Barry is offering a reduced entry fee this month of only $400 (full entry is $500). Next month it will go up to $450, so get your entry in quick! The field will shut off at 256 and I'm thinking it may fill early this year. Lower entry fee and all those straight shooting gals!

In case your wondering, the reduced entry fees will NOT reduce the purse. Barry will be making up the difference out of his pocket. So if you pay a $400 entry fee now, Barry will throw in the extra $100 to make it look like $500. What a guy!

Additionally in case you didn't know, Barry also pays the entry fee of ALL past champions who wish to play. Usually about fifteen guys get in via this route. This year several women who won past U.S. Opens (prior to 1994) that Barry put on, will also get a free ride. Did I already say, WHAT A GUY!

None of this money is deducted from the added money of $50,000. What this means is that with a full field of players the total purse will be $178,000. I'm guessing a first prize around $40,000! Not too shabby!

All and all, this is shaping up as one of the best Opens ever. I'd recommend this event to pool fans everywhere. I promise you will get your money's worth, and then some! I know I'll be there. There are good deals on hotels and motels (an abundance of them too) all around the Chesapeake Convention Center.

By the way players, in my capacity as co-TD along with Ken Shuman, I will do my damnedest to see that there are no 3 AM matches this year. I will do my best to make sure no match starts after Midnite. I believe I can make that happen.

All I can say is congratulations to Barry Behrman for standing up and leading the way towards a true US OPEN! I find this to be an amazing move on Barry's part and long overdue.

I have just officially became a US Open fan and a fan of the great Barry Behrman again!!!!

Thank you for the news Jay.

John

This is a couple of tournaments in a row without my friend Scott the Shot as the head tournament director, did I miss something? Is he sick?--Leonard

Jay, has there ever been a major tournament that gave the women a spot? I'd like to see that. Combining the men and women through a realistic spot. All the events would be packed. How many game spot would SVB give Jasmin in a race to 13? I'm guessing 3 or 4. Men race to 13 and women race to 10.
Packed house and the men would have to be on their game.
Thoughts?

women in the open?

I'm sure I'll be bashed for this but why is everyone stoked about women playing in the open?

Does anyone really think there is a woman that can compete with the top men playing even?

What kind of handicap will they get?

I would love to hear the top male players thoughts on the subject, but of course no one can say what they really think anymore.

Spot went home.
I say let 'em get up there and play! Jasmin damn sure doesn't need a spot from anyone! Do you know how many top men players she has beaten already?

Tipman, you haven't been paying attention. There are quite a few women who have already beaten top men players in tournaments. Your thinking is very dated on this subject.
