Growing Bolder

He's the only one I know that has a bigger head than Mike Dechaine. He can't do commentary because he won't stop talking about himself. I suspect he has many mirrors in his house so he doesn't miss an opportunity to admire numero uno.

Saw him at the Venetian. I also saw you and Keith then.

If more pro players like Segal an Keith McCready who made watching and listening to pool interesting and enjoyable, pool would be in a better place today...too stoic now.
Thanks JAM

"...he’s won over 100 pro tournies including 6 US Opens and 10 World Championships."

yea but how many times has he won at the Mosconi Cup?
luckily for him the jump cue wasn't so rampant back then.

oh, an congrats for breaking Earl's US open record.

The US Opens are most likely a combined US 9-ball and US 14.1 titles. Both were two of the most prestigious titles to attain. Had the US 14.1 Championships maintained some level of continuity (ironic), Sigel would have had many more US Open titles.

The six US Opens might also include something obscure, like a US 8-ball championship.

Freddie <~~~ votes for Sigel as the best

What did the field look like when Sigel won it ?
No way near as tough as SVB's for sure .
I think SVB would have tortured Sigel .

You might think but back in the day Mobie Dick was a minnow when Sigel missed a ball.

He came through town a few years back trying to promote a new Million dollar league. First place was going to pay 250,000 to the winning team with only a modest number of teams playing. I checked it out and figured it wasn't going to fly so my interest waned. It had a weird handicapping system where the weaker player would get so many ball in hands to start the game.

Mike Sigel was a great player and played all the games well. I bought one of his cues from Trudeau when he dumped them on Ebay. It was a good cue. The negative stuff has been covered but he definitely is a character which makes this sport much more interesting.

Think you'd be wrong. The fields were just as strong twenty five years ago. Spend a few moments and look back in pool history. The Rifleman, Efren, Keither, Kim, Ray, Larry, The Miz, Nick and the list is as long as today of potential event winners.

As far as Shane goes, think Mike in his prime would have tortured Shane. The comment "Mike never missed" was a truism. His break was ear shattering and effective. Of course, this was BEFORE the advent of specialized break cues and tips. Shane is a great player. Sadly, we will never get to see a challenge match between the two at their primes.

As far as his braggadocio, if you grew up without spending your late teen years developing advanced social skills, you might be like him. From 19 or 20 on, WE told him he was the best ever and he bought into it. Sure came close. I've probably known him longer than anyone posting on AZ. He grew up in the house next to my ex. She remembers him. His brother Steve remembered her. Mike never lived there of course   .

He's still promoting the league,
It started with 1 or 2 cities and expanding now.
I think it is a good idea.
Wish him success.

What was the field? Only a whole slew of hall of famers and elite players in their prime, not before their prime. Buddy Hall, Earl Strickland, Nick Varner, Jim Rempe, Steve Mizerak, Louie Roberts, Kim Davenport, David Howard, Keith McCready, Wade Crane, Jim Reid, ...

I'm sure others have already answered, but, IMO, you'd be wrong.

It's difficult to compare eras, but without Sigel, 9-ball might not look like it does today.

SilverCue...Just to get the facts straight, Mike Sigel is no longer associated with the GPPL in any way. He was "let go" (read: fired), for reasons unknown...but he is no longer connected with this league. The league itself is on hiatus. It was played in a few league areas in a few states, but only for one session. The eventual winners, which are from a room where I live (Clearwater FL) ended up winning $10,000 cash. Sigel was present to "help" hand out the cash (I was sitting next to him watching), but that was his last official act as part of the GPPL.

It is reported that Carly Simon's inspiration for "You're So Vain" was indeed, Mike Sigel.

Fred,

It is unfortunate that so many of our fellow posters are too young to remember the stellar fields at most of the tournaments Mike dominated. Thanks for adding a couple I forgot to list. Can't believe I left Earl and King James off let alone Louie and Wade :sorry: .

You should listen to Mike during a lesson. A couple hundred an hour and his method is "well this shot came up at the 1990 US Open and here's what I did", Once had a customer walk up to the front counter at Classic Billiards and ask who the guy playing by himself across the room was. He sure talks to himself a lot!!!
