Hotel response DCC

Got the proposals from the two sites. Seems like they are very proud of their remodeling!!! First off the Executive West will undergo a name change as well as a new room rate of $110. Even though there will be room for a few more tables it won't be enough for the 7ft growth I'd like to see or the 3 cushion growth I'd hoped for!.....

The Gualt House would have the space for growth. 60 7ft tables, 60 9fts as well as a few 3 cushion..Also plenty of vendors and very nice atmosphere, but it comes with negatives. The room rate as stated today would be $146 a nite and a $12 daily parking...Seems like everything is getting rediculous!!

This is their first proposal and we're going to try and get a better deal. I understand things go up. Really the Gualt House and upgrades to the Executive West may be worth it, but if you are staying more than 3 or 4 days it gets too expensive IMO! I hope they give us better rates especially if you're staying for more than 1 event! I'll keep you posted....Greg

Greg, Are these new/higher proposed room rates that the hotels quoted you, the price before, or after the tournament players discount ?

Thanks for the information

Hi Greg -- I'm a three-time veteran of the DCC and looking forward to racking up more events. Thanks so much for keeping us posted on where events will take place. The old room rate at the ExWest was super -- and I was even satisfied with the food.

The rates you propose would definitely rule me out as a future attendee. I love pool and love hanging out with pool fanatics, but I can't afford anything like what you're saying.

Just one more opinion....

another day

Tried to set up another meeting with the hotels, but it's put off till noon on Monday. .... I do appreciate everyones comments....I'm going to let you all know some of my major concerns..

1. I am willing to move the even to another location, probably South, but only as a LAST resort. The cost of the move would not stop me. It would however have to be a special location with many of the things I'm getting ready to tell you.

2. I've always tried to stay away from Casinos because I wanted as much money as possible ending up within the pool community, but that doesn't mean I definitely wouldn't do an event in a Casino if the conditions were right for the players.

3. I played in the Swanee tournament this year and learned alot. It was very well run, however at the end of the day I was so worn out waiting for matches that I almost forfeted my last match the first day, because of shere exhaustion. By the way my hotel, Days Inn, was a couple blocks from the tournament and approx. $140 per night and resembled a Motel 6....... ............
What this event did was give me new found respect for the players at the DCC who indure the waiting all day and not knowing when you're going to play you're match.....I promised myself to not put on another event unless I had enough tables to assign times for matches and have extra tables to practice and match up. I think the Galt House could make this happen....If we get the Ex. West location again even though there will be more tables than before we may have to consider limiting the field!
None of this is in stone right now only things to consider!!

4. I really don't want to go to the Ex. West (Crown Plaza to be). With the size limitation, I'll be going backwards. I'll loose the leagues on 7fts. infact the Clarion where we put 60 7fts. this year owes us around $8,000 and it looks like their parent company is going out of business........ Makes it hard to think of doing anything with them in the future!...Also I've enjoyed having the 3 cushion players attending the DCC..&..Don't want to loose them..I need to find a place to have everyone under one roof...We're trying!

5. I understand room rates...I'm going to put my foot down any see what happens...Caesars in Indiana has contaced us. However, you know my feeling on casinos, but I may use them as barganing tool and let the Galt House Exec's know I have alternatives...... I'm going to listen to what Caesars has to say.... They have enough room for about the same number of 9fts as the Executive West and around 400 rooms. I don't know what the room rates would be at this time or any details, but the place would be impressive........Still not enough room for the other events I mentioned above! But even if they don't become the new DCC we may have another event there at a future date if they make make the right offer.....There's more but that's enough tonight....just looked and it's 3AM. Shows how slow I am at typing!!! Greg

I'm thinkin you need a secretary. :D

I think we all appreciate what you have done and what you are trying to do. With your input on the table and the DCC being such stellar accomplishments and testament to your dedication and willingness to expend huge amounts of energy, I doubt we could name any one person who has done more for pool in their life than you.

Hello Greg,

This is Michael Hoang from Omega Billiards.

I read your post where you mentioned that you would be willing to move to another location (as a last resort).

If you would consider moving the event to Dallas/Fort Worth area as a last resort, I can assist you in checking around here.

Just let me know the rough parameters of what you are looking for such as sizes, # of rooms, etc. And I can start checking around.

Regards,

Michael Hoang

thanks for you're offer. I'll definitely call if it comes to that. I'm checking a location in evansville indiana tomorrow...Greg

Hey Greg, have you looked at the Clarion in Louisville where BCA had Qlympics (fun while it lasted)? That looked plenty big enough & the rooms were more than reasonable.

Happy to report that Chad and myself had a meeting at the Clarion yesterday. We are inspection the place and trying to determine how many tables we can use.........

The place is big enough to have the 9ft events and I think the 3 cushion, but I'm not sure how many 7fts if any could be used..........The rates would be very good, but only 400 rooms. We're looking into working with the Mariott next door for extra rooms and still need to establish rates with them...At least the place has a lot of potential..........

..My first choice is the Galt House, but I don't think we have a chance. Recently they lowered their rate for us to $141 VERSES $146. This is way too much and I definitely wouldn't put everyone under those conditions!...Greg

inflation is a brutal thing, recently I have spent 25% of my time in 3 different hotels in Germany for 6 months in 2 years the rates have doubled, not because the dollar is weaker, just inflation in Germany has almost doubled the hotel rates in Euro's then add in the weak dollar and the room I used to stay in went from $350/night to just under $800/ night at one hotel the other went from $175 to $300, needless to say I am staying in a little tiny rooms now, smaller than the rooms at the derby and I'm still paying $300, one trip one hotel wanted $575/night for a smaller room than at the Derby-I didnt stay there, I ended up in a ghetto room for $250/night.

the reason I shared this experience is because to show that things are tough all over, inflation is everywhere. Its not just here in America or the hotel's getting greedy. Its gonna hurt everything, less people at the Derby, conventions, pool tournments, family vacations, even here in Vegas the occupancy rates are down and thats rare. I was in Germany because of medical problems and had no choice-I wouldnt ever spend what I did on a holiday. It sucks, but for a while its gonna be tough.

What probably will happen is alot of people will attend the Derby but not for the whole time, just for the 9B, or 1P etc. I wish it was better, for the most part were all making the same $$ or less and things cost more. The boom times are over for a while. :(

In the long run when things stablize then we'll all be in a better spot to do things like we did before. Its a money supply problem, for a simple example with say $20-$30 of every tank of gas leaving the USA there is less $$$ for us here to spend, its like a poker game with a 20% per hand rake or a pool room charging $50/hr and your playing 10 ahead for $300 only the house wins and in the worlds case the house are the oil boys for the most part, this is a simple example of a complex problem. I had alot of Economics classes in college instead of spelling. But this isnt the first time this has happened to the USA and wont be the last, we just have to hold tight.

From a fan's perspective, the Clarion is going to be awesome. Everything is around: Wal-Mart/Fast food restaurants/Mexican restaurant/Chinese restaurant/Subway/Waffle House, etc.... You name it, it is close by.

The only drawback that I can think of right off the top of my head with the Clarion is parking (Hint: you folks need to stay at the hotel so you don't have to worry about parking. :) ) Most importantly, the room rates are more affordable for the players. And the rooms are quite large (at least the 3 rooms that I had been into were good size).

But Greg, please don't forget us, vendors. :) :) :)

Greg -

Another suggestion...

The EXPO building is close and freaking huge. I have been in there for some sales, ect.

While it is nice to have in same building, ie hotel, another option would be to use the expo building and then players and ect can go to many hotels and setting up a "shuttle service" would be a breeze. Most do it now for the airport or whatever. Disney does it, sea world, etc.

I think sometimes we cant see the forest for the trees....alll of us. But the EXPO building seems to be a valid option, at least it would appear so to me.

Security would be easier...more open, and then we could allow the players to pick where they want to stay.

Let me know if I can help....
