How Do You Protect A Trailer At Events?

I was thinking an "Action Salvage" sign (or better, cheap spray painted stencil look), But their trailer is in shiny condition.

I still like "Action Salvage" for TAR though.
Actually we have no trailer yet. It is in the works.

I have been thinking about this topic lately and after seeing RocketQ's post about having his trailer stolen and the numerous other times it has happened to people in this industry I was wondering what the options were for security.

After reading about the latest theft of a cue repairmans trailer from a hotel parking lot I figured I would start this to see if I could get some good ideas on how to secure a trailer at an event.

This has happened to more than one member of our industry and it is a major financial and perhaps business ending hit. What is the best way to protect a trailer in a hotel lot?

Lo-Jack is a great idea but it still only works after someone has jacked your gear and has time to empty the trailer (though I am guessing they are stealing the trailer as much as anything that may be inside it). I would think you could rig alarms and if you were really devious maybe a stun gun. Insurance obviously is a must, but once again only of use after the fact.

What are the best ways to prevent the theft?

You're best bet is with hardware (Locks). Get a good coupler lock because some coupler locks come off very easily. And/or get a wheel lock.
You won't see too many thieves using a blow torch to try and cut the locks off.

Electronic security systems are very easy to bypass.

Trailer

Just have 2 girls in string bikinis take shifts guarding the trailer. Guaranteed to be a crowd there at all times.

JC,

I like Easy's thinking, my kind of guy. E just needs a lil refining tho (this is urban warfare, not blow em all up and count the pieces :p ). I would suggest 1 well placed Claymore just inside the doors, to minimize the damage to the trailer.

Seriously, my buddy has a decent set-up:

the motion alarm WITH remote that alerts you if it's moved, along with Lo-Jack. This way, if ya can't get out there fast enough to beat the sh!t outta them, at least you can get a quick response to the cops to track them down.

Apparently, it's all about stealing the trailer. Whatever is inside is just a bonus.

Eric >locks are useless

I would disable the hitch part of the trailer after you park it where it's going to stay for a while. Take the ball holder off the end of the trailer and take it with you. Most have 3 or four rivets holding them on. Drill the rivets out and replace with bolts.

Buy a portable air pump. Deflate the tires on the trailer when you're not moving it anytime soon.

As far as them getting into the trailer and unloading it right there in the parking lot. I always liked to put razor blades in back of a phony handle or latch. After they cut the padlock they pull back on the lever and cut the hell out of themselves, leaving blood for DNA all over the trailer and parking lot. Johnnyt

didn't read the whole thread, but here's what bands on tour do with trailers:

Hitch it to your van/truck and back the truck up against a wall. There is almost always a way to do this at hotels, if there isn't drive around and find a wall to park against. With the parking brake on, they're going to have to steal the whole truck/trailer to get anything. Get an alarm that will wake you up on the truck and use it.

In that case, have you considered something that would be better protected than a trailer? How about an old U-Haul truck or something similar? They're designed to be hard to break into because everybody on Earth knows there's at least a chance of valuable stuff in one.

Talk to the police, an off duty cop would probably watch it for some bucks.

Easy just chain a trained killer to the bumper

The only way to go is a guard out there all night long.

That's what I was going to suggest, if the weather permits just sleep in the damn thing. It really sucks that it comes down to something like that but you have to protect your investments somehow.

???????????

This is what we have done when working flea markets in Louisville an Indy. Park in well lit area of motel try to get room with view of trailer, pull another vehickle in behind trailer doors where they can't be opened or trailer taken off hitch. Always have quality locks on everything an you can make covers for locks so bolt cutters won't work. We sold Beany Babies during the boom an this worked for us. Thieves always look for something
easy try to make it as difficult as possible an you done all you can.
Pinocchio
Plus all of our vehickles had alarms!!!!!!!!!!!

Hope you guys aren't serious about the traps...

This is not the only post in this thread about booby trapping. I'm not sure whether people have been joking about this or not, but it is illegal. Even if you put a sign on the trailer saying "BOOBY TRAPPED!!!" TAR would be liable for injuries resulting from the robbery, if one occurred and the offenders caught.

Of course, I don't expect them to blow up the trailer, but Johhnyt's seemed a "reasonable" trap.

> I just now saw this thread, and I'm sure someone else has suggested this. Take the wheels off,and prop the trailer up on blocks. This will require the purchase of a hydraulic floor jack with a wide range of movement,as you want to make it so the blocks you set it on are shorter than the height with the tires on it.

A cheap motion sensor on the bottom of the trailer will alert you,as well as it taking would-be thieves a while to get it jacked back up to replace the tires in case they brought their own.

Jacking up a trailer sitting on blocks will certainly draw attention,as well as consume time, which will hopefully give you the time to sneak up on them and give them a crowbar or .45 caliber enema. Tommy D.

One letter, one number..................C-4

That may not be such a good idea. With "C-4" marked on the trailer, someone is sure to mistake it for property belonging to a rapper.

One possible solution for reovering a stolen trailer or vehicle QUICKLY lies here:

TrimTrac & Otter Box.
http://www.trimtrac.com/TrimTrac Pro Brochure.pdf

Have some live Internet access and "wallah".

It's small enough 4" x 8" to conceal inside of a set of speakers and when recovering your trailer, bring your two best friends; Smith & Wesson. :bash: Or if you get the Otter Box, it has 3 LARGE, STRONG magnets so that you can slap it on the undercarriage where it won't be seen and won't fall off when the trailer is moving.

Another Solution

Put a cot inside of the trailer and some air holes for breathing. Ask one of the pool players who don't have a room or is broke if they want to get some shut-eye. I would opt not to try and make this idea a money maker. ;)

Elviscash has the right idea for the lock on the door. Also, if you have a ball lock hitch, you can get it modified for not to much. What you want is for the ball part to be connected by pins. That way, all you have to do is pull the pins, and the ball comes off. Can't drive it away without a hitch on it.

If you are going to have it in one spot unused for a week, just rent a storage place and park it in there. They cost about $30 a month. Cheap price for the security.

No ball, no wheels, job-box security lock on it, a thief would have to work pretty hard to get at anything.

Joe Blackburn had his trailer stolen from a secure storage inside a fenced area and they just drove in and took it.

One other idea. Talk to the local pd about parking the trailer on their lot.
