How Much is the Crown Prince of Brunei Bribing the WPA?

Well, last year his opponents were bribed to dump games to him, so all of his matches wouldn't be whitewashed. The WPA knows that everyone knows about it, why are they still letting it happen? My friend was there last year, and he said the guy really can't play at all. Letting him in the tournament isn't all that bad, since he is the sole representative of a country, but the open bribing of a few of the game's top players, in front of people, I think that kind of makes the WPA look bad for turning a blind eye. At least have him do it in private this time.

money talks, always has, always will. I say let him get crushed like the banger he is. Won't happen though.

You guys better watch it. He'll have you turned to sand.

And now you've caused me to be associated with the matter!

I dont guess I would much care if he sponsored a ULTIMATE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP and payed every player a appearance fee and if you drew him the rule was make it look good and lay down. In doing so, there is a nice bonus in it for you and the tour will be infused with a nourishing endowment that could help it carry on.

Maybe this is just me, but if he brings A LOT of money to the sport this is a minor compromise of principle I'm willing to make.

If that's happening, it's pretty damn lame. Don't worry though, there is plenty of match dumping happening in the qualifying rounds where neither player is a billionaire.

It takes two to tango. If a player accepts money to shave the score on a match, he is just as responsible as the man who paid him to do it.

Personally I like having a guy like the Sultan of Brunei interested in pool, just like a Joe Rogan. He is in a position to make a huge difference in the monetary aspects of the sport if he so choses. In one fell stroke, he could sponsor a worldwide tour of big money events. And I bet everyone would get paid too!

As far as I'm concerned he gets a spot in every tournament that he sponsors.

that I agree with pretty much, except 'Dad' probably won't let him.

Is this the guy who bought Efren's Judd? I am a terrible player, my high run is only 3 balls. Could somebody post a picture of this Sultan so I can make sure I don't play him for cash?

Efren even went to his palace and played him after the SEA Games.
Efren's fancy Judd was sold in the middle east. Not in Brunei.

I think that we really don't know what is going on. It's kind of like the accusations of dumping. Unless you specifically saw dumping and catching then you shouldn't advertise it as such.

If a much lesser player is playing me in a tounament and I am crushing that person and there is no chance for that person to get lucky and move my piece of cheese, I will let up on them. I recognize that it takes a lot of guts to step up to the plate when the individual knows full well that the talent level in the tournament pond is quite a bit above their own level. I personally recognize and respect that person's courage for stepping up to the plate and I will ease up on them so that they can gain some experience in tournament play, so that they will continue to support tournament play and to thank them for the participation.

I have been one of those "lessor" players, most of my life, playing against far better players in tournaments where I could only dream of winning a match or two. It isn't easy putting yourself to the test time after time, knowing that you are going to run into buzz saw after buzz saw. It's kind of nice to see high level players show some appreciation for the wannabees like me and Al-Muhtadee Billah Bolkiah.

This is a very harsh accusation. Can you provide facts or only hear say?

I once asked the Sultan of Brunei if he wanted to play a set or two. He said, "yes, I will play you a race to 7 for $1000 US dollars". After I accepted and we were pulling our cues out he pulled me to the side. He whispered," All of my countrymen will be watching us on the webcast so if you win you get $1000, but if you lose (as he gave a sinister wink) I will shower you with gold bullion worth millions in US dollars." I nodded back at the Prince and gave him a reassuring handshake.
The Prince broke and made a ball but scratched. As I took the cue ball I looked over at the Prince and then into the webcam and said " up yours with the spot, ok? ". Which was crazy, because we weren't playing with a spot but I thought it might confuse him. I calmy ran the first table and then put a six on him to blank him in the set 7-0. He walked up to me and handed me a few flourescent colored bills with what looked like a lion king on the front. He said "you have made a very bad decision and disgraced me in front of my country, I shouldn't pay you anything but my word is always good so here it is". I looked at him and said, " look dude, go to Public's and see if you can trade out this Monopoly bullshit for some Grants and Benjamins or I'm gonna have to wale on that princely ass". He went over to the ATM and withdrew enough to pay me and then left. That is how I became the Sultan of Athens, GA.

You are a disgrace to poolplayers everywhere.:)

Wpa Bribed?

Nice one Jay! Good to see some sense among the garbage. I have known Prince Billah for many years. He originally played snooker and when 9 Ball caught his attention I provided him with cues, coaching, practice partners and tournament opportunities. He takes his hobbies pretty seriously. They include Badmington which he plays to international standard and he also has his own soccer team. Unfortunately it is the only one in Brunei so they play in a neighbouring country league.

He takes his pool seriously and on his frequent visits to the UK he would play a challenge match EVERY day. Race to 11 - start at 11am sharp and usually takes a couple of hours while his entourage sit around waiting for him. He brings his own personal pool caddy, Dodi who racks the balls and prepares the Prince's cues for action.

The WPA bribed? What good would that do? The tournament is organised by Matchroom and the Prince is nominated by the Asian Pocket Billiard Union. He may not be the best player in the tournament (nor the worst) but he is proud to represent his country. He breaks well considering he generally breaks from the middle) and he is capable of stringing racks together.

His presence at any event does more good than harm as it creates an interest in certain media to which the game generally has no access.

Let the man get on with the game which he enjoys and supports.
It has probably cost close to a $million on practice, travel, security etc to get this far. Not to mention the man hours he has put in.

Nice post Doug, as with any world championships as many countries as possible should be represented, thats the whole point of it! As long as he is one of the best players in his country and not taking the spot from a more talented player in Brunei I have no problem with it.

The only question is should pool have a minimum qualifying mark/standard like many Olympic events have? It wouldn't be as easy to test like qualifying times though.

TheUnitaryValue,
Actually, I think it would be easy to test relative proficiency. Just administer a PAT test, or 30 racks of Equal Offense to all potential competitors; set a minimum value based on your wishes. Better yet, have a national pool organization do this; certify players, organize a tour, promote pool in the schools and community......wait.....that's totally impossible in the U.S.......please disregard this post, you were correct.
