ever say this.......

But, as my game changes, I see areas that I need to improve in and have to assume that others need improvement in these areas and while I could just as easily post my threads in the Main Forum, I am just wondering if there would be a large enough interest to start a sub-forum for THE MENTAL GAME.

Like most people, I occasionally have difficulty dealing with distractions, focusing etc. and I have made efforts outside of this forum to deal with this as well as many other things that deal with THE MENTAL GAME.

Is there an interest by others to have a sub-forum for these type of threads or should I place those type of threads in the Main Forum?

Just curious.

I like checking out the various sub-forums and knowing what type of info I will find there. Most of the threads that I find interesting on the Main Forum quickly end up on the 2nd or 3rd page anyway and then the conversation just dies. The Main Forum just gets overrun with nonsense much of the time. Threads in the sub-forums have more time to breath in my opinion.

So having more sub-forums is a good thing if you ask me.

Good idea, it sure wouldn't hurt. Any additional information is always good to have.

I'm curious Joey ... how much straight pool is being played these days? The reason I'm curious is because IMO that is THE game that epitomizes the act of exercising our mind's ability to focus.

I don't know, but I'm guessing most people don't play the game hardly at all and they all want to improve their mental game.

That's like wishing you could get rid of a headache without ever trying an aspirin as far as I'm concerned. :D

Straight pool isn't played much down my way. (New Orleans). One pocket is the game of choice in these parts.

However, that could change REAL SOON. Mike Immonen and John Schmidt will be playing a large dollar match of straight pool at my home pool room, Buffalo Billiards on May 20th of this year, followed by 16 players who are each putting up $2,000 per man to play in a one pocket tournament. There will be an open 9 ball tournament rolling along about the same time for those of us who don't make the cut with the one pocket.

I wish I could be certain of what you say. I'm not saying that this isn't true, I just haven't experienced enough straight pool to know for myself. Perhaps, I will get a taste of straight pool with Mika and John and start playing some.

Thanks for responding. I will approach Mike Howerton about adding a sub-forum called The Mental Game or something similar. As a person who hasn't visited the sub-forums very often, it is ironic that I would be interested in starting another one.

While I will admit that one pocket does slightly edge out straight pool for my #1 preferred game, straight pool is the game that leaves you in the moment of deep concentration and focus for the longest period of time with the added benefit of leaving the choice of which ball to shoot next entirely up to the player. This further exercises the old brain cells and adds a degree of pressure.

It stands to reason that practicing to remain focused through multiple racks makes it easier to remain focused for the shorter bursts in 8 ball and 9 ball.

Interestingly, at least for me, I find that one pocket requires long periods of staying in the moment also. However in one pocket those extended periods carry over to when you are between turns. Like a chess game it requires constant assessment of the table layout and planning ahead. No other game offers that aspect of focus IMO.

I don't see a thing wrong with it. A sub-forum could certainly put more focus on where the game truly originates. Good idea.

I think it would be a good idea, Joey. If it starts, I just hope it isn't taken over by one or two "Master" minds who think they have all the answers on the mental game. Or by spammers who will tell you the answers are available on their dvd's or in their lessons...all you have to do is pay for them.

Joey,

A rare thing indeed when you are behind the eightball! AZB has long had a mental forum, just need to rename this one properly. What to call the new subforum about the nonphysical aspects of the game, that's a tough one!

The problem with subforums is usually they wither and die. Most people don't bother going to them and the two left there know exactly what each other think!

There is this ShootingArts fellow that is always ready to talk about the zone for example, the real deal third level supernatural metaphysical spaceman zone. If I ever get around to making a DVD me and CJ will have to have a special forum just to talk spaceman shlt!

Shouldn't there be a sub forum to discuss new ideas for other sub forums?

It's always nice talking with you about anything Hu, even if I am on the wrong side of the discussion!

Hahaha. Why not...

Why not call the sub forum Psycho Pool ?
I'm sure most of us would be allowed in.

We always knew you were mental, Joey.

No big surprises there...

None.

I would be interested in a sub-forum. I am not so sure that I expect answers, but it is worth a try and better seeing than more threads about which tip is best and which shaft has the least deflection. Books and CDs do not come close to addressing the issue. The ability to focus mentally on a single task must be an individual problem. I have looked into non-sports related books on the topic but have found nothing useful.

Perhaps some people are actually nervous and distracted when they address an important shot. But I believe there is more to the topic than that. I happen to be in a good spot this past week. But as in the past, I am sure it will pass and inconsistency will rule the day.

If the players had ref's as they DID in the past then we would not have to worry about some player trying to shark us. The players of today would not know how to react if the ref (with white gloves) reached down and got the bridge for them.

I think the mental aspect of the game has to be experienced to learn. it's a look at yourself and analyze and criticize your thinking. talking about it will seldom help, even less do for the weak minded who's game is ruined by his mental "game". it's all on you.
