If you could go back

If you could go back to the first time you picked up a pool cue, and you knew everything you know today, would you walk away or do it all over?
As much as I love to play I think I would walk away , just because of the huge portion of my life I have given to it in several capacities.
I have also spent a lot of money playing at the game over 45 years.

This is not a pool knock thread, like I said , I love to play the game.
I am just curious if other people feel the same, or if they still have the same emotions as they did when they started.

I would do it all over again ,only I would be even more dedicated and put more time in the second go around.

I would go back and give myself some serious coaching, but at that age I probably wouldn't have remembered it nor appreciated it. In fact, I don't remember it now. Whut?

I would've grabbed the stick left handed and forced myself to believe I was left handed.

I definitely would have stuck with the game. It's been my friend when no one else was.

It really is a silly thing to know how to do, this pool stuff.

That said, aside from Medical or Law School there is really nothing I can think of that would have been a better pursuit. Maybe crack, I hear it is pretty good, but I never tried it.

I could have been drinking in titty bars or slingin dope, but at least pool paid for itself and kept me from having a real job for a decade.

My SSA statement is kinda scary though!

I definetly would do it all over again. This time though, I would start from an earlier age and not put my cue down for 10 years.

I would walk away.

*Most* of the people you meet would like to piss on you rather than help you.

Then if you're really good you can be almost broke, that is if you don't get messed up in drugs or booze.

What do you call a pool player without a girlfriend? ................. HOMELESS

I would learn to play left handed as well, and when I decided to start playing tournaments, I would have played in a lot more to get comfortable in that setting. I know I could have been a better tournament player if I had given myself a chance.

P.S. I still like pool after 45+ years of it! And it is still a challenge to play well. That never gets old.

It is a double-edged sword for me. I met my wife at a poolroom a friend of her family owned so it is one of those "if this hadn't happened then that wouldn't have happened" things.

Take that out of the equation and without a doubt I would walk away and be exceedingly glad that I did. The amount of time and devotion spent playing this game in my late teens definitely detracted from other more worthwhile pursuits, mainly furthering my education.

So....the catch 22 persists and since there is no time machine, all is well with the universe.

OMG this is an easy one! I put pool aside to pursue my X-wife . If I could do it over again I would have held onto that cue with every ounce of strength I had in my body

That's a funny question. When I was really into the game, doing drills, and gambling, the one piece of advice I would give to the newbs was to quit playing this instant. Think of the thousands of hours some of us have spent around the table. Spend that time in the gym, you're going to be a professional body builder. Spend it in school, we'd have seven masters degrees. My personal opinion is that I would not have taken up the game. As a non smoker, it probably took a couple years off the end of my life as well with the many years of smokey pool rooms.

If I could go back 20 years knowing what i know today, the first thing I would have done different is to buy an APA franchise. That way I could have made a living while being around the game that I love.

Just curious if anyone else has the same thought.

you took the words right out of my mouth partner...........

someone said a while back about how the game stole someones soul and such....i forget who it was but it was in reference to some great legend of the game....

pool didn't take the soul.....the soul was given willfully.

If people believe that someone gay can be born that way then imop a person can be born to paint or sing or play billiards.

some people its just what we do......doesn't matter the ones that surround us, when they are there or when they are not there.....if there is a table then WE are there and thats all that matters honestly.

Awesome post, Grey.

I have no regrets and would have made the same choices.

I have to say, I would walk away.

As JAM likes to say, "It will bankrupt your sole."

Nothing has been as constant in my life as the game of pool. Whenever I play it takes my mind off of everything else. It's not the most important thing in my life but it HAS been the most reliable. It's also a big part of who i am today.
I dont think the game bankrupts your soul, I think some of the people involved in the game take allot more than they give, but that not the game. The game is pure, people make it dirty and deceitful. It's what you make of it.

Love pool......always have, always will !!!
If I got a do-over, I would be more dedicated.
And, started playing one pocket sooner.
