I own a small billiard store here in Michigan. I know it is the off season per say for pool here because of summer time....but does the pool playing stop in the year around warmer states ie: Cali, Ariz, New Mex, Nevada, Florida, Texas.....Here in Michigan people flock to the summer days outside, but pool is a 80% after 7pm sport I think. I'm not complaning about buisness, I just want to shoot some, I call people, and ask to shoot, there like , ohh, I have to mow or the trees need trimmed, my house has a flat, I need a kidney transplant, my liver is bad............where are the pool bums?, I thought the reprobates flock to the poolrooms during a depression....so much for the good ol'e days.... dosn't help I'm in Flint eather, murder/arson capital of the world......OTB

Online shopping and it will only get worse for Brick and mortar shops. Heck, I hardly ever buy anything in stores anymore other then food. I just bought two new knives this week on line. They have them at Bass pro shops but It was easier to just order on line plus I saved about 20%.

thanks for the imput, I'm not looking to where the customer is as to more where the players are, I can not find a game anywhere really........bars are empty, poolrooms empty, no home games, nothing in my area. I dont even get the free coffee & pool moochs wanting to play in my store on our practice table ......was chiming in to see if it was the same everywhere, it only happens here in the warmer months May-Sept...........

Well I have read where you State, Michigan is down a few job with the Auto Industry shall we say moving out, and those well paying job going bye bye. Fear not Michigan is not alone in being effected by the US Recession, Arizona out look in the Sunday New Paper for job is about a page under Obama, where when we had Bush these was a Sunday Jobs Section in the Arizona Republic, Phoenixes largest Daily News Paper.

A yea ago I was told 100 Bars & Sports Bars with Pool Table had been closed in the Valley of the Sun, and I see nothing on the horizon but bad economic news.

Look at the AZB Wanted & For Sale Section, it is a Buyers Market, and a lot of fine values are there for sale, or trade, and not finding new homes.

Pool Players do not have the extra income to spend on fun, they had under BUSH.

I say it is all President Obama fault for breaking campaign promises, and not reducing the deficit, and putting American back to work.

Well personally I can't make a ball this time of the year. Guys that I beat without trying all year long own me in the summer. I don't focus and worse then that I don't care. I have a big ole Diamond set up by RealkingCobra himself that I wont even uncover.

The good thing (I guess) is summers only last 90 days at 8000 feet above sea level so my pool drought will end soon.

Good luck in finding a game, I hope things work out for you:smile:.

Here in Washington State it is also the same. Normally we have a max of two months of complete Sun Shine, and the rest of the year it's cloudy and it rains, even in the winter!!!

So people just disappear during those few months of Summer, I suspect it has been that way since the beginning of time and I doubt that it will ever change!!!!

So it's a good time to clean the shop and do some inventory, at least that way you can accomplish something.

We're not a "Warmer state" exactly, but we've had pretty much a straight week of 100 degree weather.

Our pool rooms do have people, I think it mostly depends on the room conditions. If anyone's played in a very smoky room that isn't air conditioned properly, it's hellish. Your eyes water, your arms sweat, the cue starts squeaking when you take warmup strokes... people who go through it a few times might decide they'd rather hang out at home in full AC and do something that requires even less physical activity than pool.

Most of the rooms in this area are AC'd nicely and big enough to not feel hot & crowded. So you can find players there in the evenings.

It does suck when even at 8:30/9:00 it isn't dark yet. To me, it just feels wrong to shoot in the daylight.

LOL. Wrong section of AZB maybe? The reason most people don't have the extra income now is BECAUSE of BUSH. The American economy began it's huge sag while BUSH was still in office and after eight years of him and REPUBLICANS in Congress. The only ones who don't remember that are the ones who drank ALL the Kool-Aid. If it hadn't been for the Democratic spending and bailouts the country would be in a DEPRESSION now.

And I'm not even planning to vote for Obama. In fact, I voted Republican in my local Congressional district last time. Not that I like Republicans at all. I just happened to think the Democrat didn't deserve my vote but it wasn't for economic or fiscal reasons.

Oh a political debate thread, i'll get my popcorn for the next 5 pages

I guess my 2 cents would be that what goes up must come down and that includes every empire since history has been kept. They all get too big and corrupt eventually.

I don't think any politician can change the way the wind is blowing in the US, the country will start growing again only when Chinese and Indian people start making larger salaries and americans are starving and willing to work for $1.25 an hour, then companies will start bringing jobs to the US where labor is cheapest and the cycle will start over.

I know that the casinos really help the pool players stay broke. All the Detroit casinos are within 20 minutes from all the poolhalls. Tough to find suckers when the casinos break all of them. Without the suckers the poolplayers can't even play each other around here.

Well at least you vote, and the said fact is only 15-20% of those eligible to vote even register, and than actually cast a ballot.

I find many of the people who talk openly about how the country is changing, there are no job, and all the other problems plaguing the country. Have not even registered to vote, or cast a ballot.

SAD!!!

In reality the blame finger should be cast at all POTUS Past & Present for Signing Laws in to Law that have hurt the USA, introduce as Proposed Legislature by Congress Past & Present, aka Members Present of the US House of Representatives, and US Senate Past & Present

Laws like NAFTA, Last that allow import of good into the US Tariff Free, or Duty Free, Law that give Foreign Competition over the USA in Trade.

Pool is popular year-round here in Texas, but you've got to understand that it's basically summer all year long down here. There are very few days in a year that you will see me in long pants (shorts and sandals for me, thank you).

I can totally understand the states that have a long winter season having its inhabitants doing a lot of outdoor activities in the "shorter" summer season.

Hope you find a game soon!!!

more truth than many realize in this

The gamblers can get their fix at the corner store with a scratch off or lottery ticket and every cafe, restaurant and truck stop has poker machines. Started to open a cafe myself a few years back, the two poker machines alone netted $30,000 a year, everything else was gravy. Trick question, what takes up more room, two poker machines or a pool table?

The horse tracks are relics. Without forced support from the casino industry and state support to keep them alive a two billion plus a year horse breeding industry would be gone. The pool halls are just a much smaller version of the horse tracks. Some skill and knowledge is required to play pool or the horses and hope to succeed. Most gamblers prefer to rely on luck or very simple systems that don't require constant work and effort.

The pool rooms only have the pool players left. Some like to gamble, many don't. With so many of the gamblers spending their money elsewhere even if they gamble in a pool hall they bet smaller and there is a much higher percentage of people who simply enjoy the game and don't care to gamble.

Organized crime has destroyed pool. Give us back the money and the people that the government and the mafia have taken away from us and pool would be rolling in the cash! The two biggest criminal organizations in the US, the mafia and the government, have united and we are screwed. In fact, this is a major reason that the economy is in the toilet. Do the math. Look at the casino earnings and realize the bite that is taken out of the local economy never to be seen again!

You can add in WalMart too. Used to be you spent a dollar at the local shop and it turned over ten or fifteen times locally. Spend a dollar at the local casino and most of it vanishes into the ether, never to be seen locally again. The same is true of spending at the big box. To a large part the enemy is we-uns. We save a dollar at the WalMart and never realize that saving that dollar is biting us in the ass and costing us money long term. Pool players that frequent the casino and spend a hundred or two on the lotteries and scratch-offs buying a few every time they stop for a coke or cup of coffee, those that play the poker machines daily, don't need to whine about the pool halls dying and not being able to find a game in the pool hall, the people just like them are what have killed the pool halls.

All levels of our government are in bed with the mafia and big business. As long as we have the huge sucking drains on our economy we are going to be screwed, regardless of other issues. The local pool halls and pool stores are just a few of the people screwed.

...was chiming in to see if it was the same everywhere, it only happens here in the warmer months May-Sept

It's the same here every summer. Our players go floating down the river, climb mountains, golf, etc.

Summers have been dead in Ohio since I started playing in the 1960s.

It's so hard to decide where to start that I decided to not.
