Is There Some Hidden -or- Special Meaning To Your Unusual Az Name / Avatar?

Multi-forum handle.

I'd change it something pool related if I could, too lazy to find out.

This week's Avatar: Jackie say's no!

"Kobachi" has double meaning to me:

The first, very few people know here, and I wish to only share in person.

The second, growing up as a kid, whenever we (the neighborhood kids) ever got into trouble, ie: break a window playing ball, or whatever, and had to explain things to an adult figure, we would always use "Johnny Kobachi did it"...Johnny was a make believe person who didn't exist.

Lastly, some assume I'm Asian from "Kobachi". I'm Italian Irish.

I'm Kevin, nice to meet me.

Avatar is my late dog Jack, I'll change it one day. I'm on AZ so much it's nice to still see him.

Man I feel uncreative lol. Mine is just my initials but the 5 does have significant meaning to me pool wise. The very first pool hall I ever played in was The Orange Ball here in Rockville, MD before it closed down. My cousins took me there after Thanksgiving dinner back in 2000 I believe. I was only in 6th grade so it was pretty big that my cousins who were in college back then wanted me to hang out with them. Took the 5 because of that place.....

Johnny T was the last name I was called in the poolrooms and bars. Before that it was "Whitey"=I had almost white hair as a teen. "The Rabbit" for the way I just about ran around the pool table. "The Wet Head"=during long all nighter matches I would go in the BR and soak my head in a sink of cold water. Pretty hard to get it dry with paper towels. "The Rebel"=I have no idea why I was called that one. Johnnyt

Llike many on this forum, in the process of learning and striving to improve my game, I became (and still am) quite obsessed with the game. Also, thought incorporating ob- sespool (like cespool) might be clever. In hindsight, not sure why I would want to associate myself with a "cespool"????
Oh well.......stickin with it now!

Bavafongoul........

I've been an active buyer and seller on e-Bay for over a decade and naturally I've won and lost on some auctions when I was bidding to buy. It was the losing part that I disliked the most.

I also play on-line poker and I use "Bavafongoul" as my handle. So the question is why do I use it.

I grew up in B'klyn, N.Y. in the days of "Westside Story". The cops were tough but the streets were even tougher. There was lots of nationalities and ethnicities and copious numbers of kids that lived on my block. There had to be 80-90 kids my age that lived on my street and just around the corner was an equal number of kids on that block too. Remember that Brooklyn alone had over 7million people at that time and there were also the adjoining burroughs of Queens, Bronx, Manhattan and Staten Island......lots of people lived in NYC.

What's my point.....growing up on the street you referred to everyone by their last name.......you couldn't ask someone....."Where's Tommy or Kevin, ot Billy etc. There were just too many of us with the same first name on the same block. It was that way in the classrooms....teachers always called you by your last name.

Using a person's last name really brought out the fellow or gal's ethnicity and as such, you started using phrases and slang of your own culture with one another. Now Italian was the dominant nationality in most of Brooklyn......lots of paisons.........so you started using slang curse words when ranking on one another. The famous middle finger held erect was the Italian symbol for my what my Italian slang handle means....."Go _uck Yourself or _uck You".

So when I started bidding on e-Bay and won the auction beating others out (I"ve done over 150 deals on e-Bay where is where I bought my Scruggs & Mottey cues, Breitling & Omega watches, Canon Cameras etc.) and so when I won the auction, my handle said to other losing bidders a subtle message if they understood Italian. When I played poker and won, my handle also sent the same subtle message.

My nationalties are essentially 1/2 Irish & I/2 Italian but the Italian part is what seemed to come out the most. I mean there were wiseguys that hung out at the Sons of Italy Club that was only two blocks from where I grew up. As kids, we watched the numbers runners come in towards dinner time dropping off their policy slips & money to Big Tony and his hord. As kids we all loved going for the best pizza in the world and it was at Sam's Restaurant on Court Street where the wise guys would go and eat their Veal Piccata etc while we ate pizza and stared at them wondering what they were discussing or planning. They parked their big dark colored cadillacs and Lincoln's right outside Sam's and no one parked there after 6PM at night fully knowing that at anytime Big Tony or any of his club members might show up. It wasn't smart to park in their spot if you wanted your car to remain in good condition.

So when I had to come up with a handle, the slang term "Bavafongoul" popped into my mind and I've used it for 15 years and really don't see any reason to change. Even though my last name is Brennan, my Italian Heritage and my first 30 years of life living in NYC made an indellible impression me and that's something I hope never changes either.

Az Handle

Cigars. I smoke em', have been the cigar biz and am my friends go-to on all things garlike. Hence,Garczar.

The nickname RunoutJJ (JJ are my initials) came about one night at league in SF back in 2001. I was leading the 8 Ball league as the top shooter and I was pitted against my arch rival who was a monster and nipping at my heals for my title.

I won the lag by a hair and broke and ran out the race to 4 set!! After we shook hands he smiled and said.. "Well I guess you can't fade runoutJJ can ya??" "Nice run buddy!" :-) So I was know as RunoutJJ from that moment on. Most people call me Jesse James nowadays which I really like and fancy myself as a cold blooded killer on the table... Even though as of late that isnt the case :-(

As for the Avatar the two guys are know as Mark and Jeremy from the british show PEEP SHOW. Kinda like a british style seinfield where everybody is somehow getting screwed and being completely ridiculous about handling delicate situations. Its very funny and highly recommended :-)

When I began this pool journey of mine a few years ago, I would search the internet for sites that were pool related, and eventually I found AZB. I had no intention of jumping in and participating at the time, but I got tired of having to answer the question in order to use the search function, so I decided to create a login name.

I didn't put a lot of thought into it (obviously) and simply needed something to use. Regionally here, we use the term or phrase "dubbing around" as doing something not terribly well or seriously, and a "dub" would be that someone. As I was literally brand new to the game, and had nothing to add to the forum, I decided on Justadub. Never imagining that I would become so addicted and involved with the sight. Had I realized that, I probably would have taken more time in choosing a user name. I expect that I will eventually ask the powers that be to change it to some variation of my real name, Bruce.

As for the avatar, that is a result of the op, Mr.Chicken, posting a suggestion here that after all the time and posts that I had made, I should have an avatar. I'm from Maine, so whenever the conversation led to visiting here, pretty much everyone would mention lobster. And around that time, JAM and I had been bantering (good naturedly) about the proliferation of avatars with scantily clad women, so she found this photo for me to use, incorporating both the lovely lady and a lobster. I didn't have the heart to say that wasn't a Maine lobster at the time, and to be honest, I wasn't sure it was a lobster at all. I liked the thought (and the photo, heh) and went with. Someone pointed out later that it is indeed a lobster of the Caribbean variety, so technically the symbolism is accurate, I suppose... Thanks again, KC and JAM, that thread was fun.

Mine is not very creative either. It's my first and last name initials with the game we all love tacked on. My avatar is the predecessor to the cue stick, a mace. I bet they didn't shoot too many draw shots back in those days. Good thread.

3railkick because I hook myself a lot. If I'm going to foul or scratch, might as well put some miles on the cueball. ;)

maniac & black balled . . .

For maniac and black balled whom I mentioned in the op, there may be more to their stories so please guys, feel free to chime in.

And thanks to those who have already unravelled some mysteries, we're learning a lot.

keep 'em coming.

best,

I just use the same posting name wherever I go...my initials and a car I had for 34 years. That was a 1972 911S. My avatar is what I drive now.
I guess deep down I'll always be a "car guy" although I don't do the car club thing now.

Pool is realatively recent for me. Played a little when dating my wife of 37 years, but the sticks got put away when it was time to run a small biz, raise a daughter. Started playing again after retirement...so we really are recreational bangers...but enjoy any modest improvements.

Pics of the old 911S (Now under the care of a dear friend who lives in Istanbul) and the Bullitt Mustang...it just a driver that gets us to The Cue Ball (Salem, OR) and back once a week or so. You'll find us on the back table most Thursday afternoons.

I got the name from my friends because I worked for an airline and was routinely moved all over the world at the drop of a hat. I'd vanish for weeks to months, and my job didn't include a whole lot of time for internet or fun so I didn't stay in touch with people as much as I would have liked.

The avatar is my custom broom-cue.

My best friend & I were out shooting a few racks one day while our wifes were X-mas shopping. He says to me after I played safe on him like 4 shots in a row, ''your a pooldogging bastard'' when I joined this site I thought the name sounded pretty good, just made some adjustments to it pooldawg8 & the #8 is because after Dale Earnhardt Sr passed away I started rooting for Dale Jr #8 As for my avatar, its a picture of my son who means the world to me. Great thread keep it going
