is this normal wear or abuse ?

That break looks like the cue was whipped rapidly.I saw a similar break happen to a house cue when he use missed the shot and whipped the cue in the air. The front 1/3 of the shaft went flying. The forces on a whip action are very substantial.

if the shaft broke in half because of a flaw in the maple the separation would be clean, in the photo the shaft has splintered with IMO obvious signs of extreme force applied... like Mr. Wayne said you will prob find signs of bending or some big dents.

i have seen shafts break because due to a flaw in the maple, it would look closer to this...

Chuck, if there's at least a half-truth in what your customer said then it kind-of speaks to a virtue of the joint you use. As Joey mentioned, often a cue will snap at the bottom of the shaft as a metal pin is more rigid, and has more tensile strength than the surrounding wood. If your customer did in fact snap the shaft on a poorly executed break then we could assume -- at least on this particular cue -- the joint as a whole allowed for more flex than the center section of the shaft.

...just a thought.

I was thinking the same thing.

Obviously...not a CM here.....but my first thought when I saw that broken shaft was that the cue joint proved itself that day. I've read a little about Chuck's joint construction.....now I feel like I have seen something important about his joint construction.

This "accident" or whatever it was may say more about the integrity of the joint than it does about the shaft itself.

Sorry to interrupt.....carry on gentlemen......

FWIW I think it's highly unlikely that shaft just exploded spontaneously.

.

this cue is about 3 years old and i have replaced the butt cap that all by its self got a big crack in it. the owner of the cue said he just did a normal break and the shaft came apart in his hands ? what you would tell a customer that told you a story like that?

Tell him to take up Masturbation, then when has master that come back try pool. On second thought, that may be a very bad idea because next he will come to you with part of his anatomy in hand and expect you help put it back in it's rightful place. Which in this would be his forehead!!!!

The guy obviously a Dick Head!!!!

broken shaft

depends on the customer.
no one wants to play games.
but if its a good customer. who cares how the shaft got broke.
i might even split the cost with them. or knock off a couple bucks
but i wouldnt want to kill any future sales.
mike

No offense Mike but these are the type of people that you would want to kill future sales with.

If they are willing to lie to you in order to get a free shaft or work etc, you
would prefer that they are close to someone elses shop other than yours.

They put $400 in your pocket and in short order, they will cost you more than that in material, time and grief.

Once they know you are an easy Mark and can get away with it, they will hound the crap out of you.

That was definitely broken over something. The long splinter is the side it was hit on. The wood pulled it self apart. The long splinter was the last part to physically separated from the other half of the shaft. I had two shaft snapped in half by my ex wife. She snapped both over her leg. Look almost identical to this.

She sure had skinny legs then! :)

This dudes name isnt Earl is it? :DSomeone needs to take an anger management class, a breaking 101 class, and while he's at it a chalking the tip not the ferrule class. I'd epoxy it back together and tell him he's now the proud owner of a laminated shaft.

More like a slammer to me.
Benders break it by the joint b/c the hole on the shaft is the weakest point.
This looked like it was slammed above the joint.

Bingo! I've broken a shaft (cracked the collar) breaking...this shaft was broken over his knee.

Heh, I'd tell him I went to the pool hall he plays at and asked around and found out he broke it in anger. See if he calls your bluff. :)

It is tough dealing with people like this. If you tell him you won't work with him to make him a new shaft he'll probably run around to everyone and talk about how YOU screwed HIM... /sigh

If I were you I would offer him a free warantee replacement shaft . . .
with a $200 handling fee.

I'd also ask him for break lessons. Cause anyone who can demolish a shaft like that has to have monister breakage.

I've snapped enuff wood in the garage to make smaller for the bin to know
what a clean break is as opposed to one over your knee.

confesses

after showing him a few of the responses to this thread he admits he might have been a BIT rough with the shaft, i am making him a new one, he's paying full price

Wow! This forum is good for something!

I must say you are a good man. I think if I would have been in your shoes I would have given the broken shaft back to him and told him to take his business else where since he was dishonest.

Great job on the forums part!
