Jayson Shaw is looking for a tournament backer

I grew up around farmers. Not much different than owning live stock.

If it breathes, eats and shits, it will eventually end up costing you money.

@ CLEARY - please correct me if i'm smoking CRACK, but -

- isn't Jason Shaw sponsored by Str8Shots? and under Contract/"äpproval"?

I don't exactly know what Str8Shots is, but they're not putting him in tournaments so...

You can write off all expenses which would outweigh the cashes unless you are a top 3 player.

Still has to pay self employment tax. On his last years winnings he would have paid around $6300.00.
That is assuming he even filed taxes.

This could make financial sense if the backer limits his investment to local open/pro tournaments. Shallower fields mean that Shaw has a better chance of snapping it off and the expenses would be limited to entry and gas.

Once you add in airfare/hotel and a deep, major tournament level field, the purses just aren't big enough for a backer to make money on this.

There is one of the problems, the backer is either a partner or he isn't. I am sure in a local tournament with pretty much no expenses other then a small entry fee the player will want to pay himself and keep everything he wins. He only wants the backer when it is to his advantage. In other words, he wants a backer when the bet is bad.

Isn't he from Scotland?

With social media networking available to anyone, Jayson Shaw may be able to seek a remedy to funding. Coming on AzBilliards, IMHO, even though it worked for John Schmidt, isn't a good thing. James Walden, et al., comes to mind, and I like James very much, but because of what occurred on this forum, I would be very reluctant to contribute.

I used to enjoy helping others in the pool world, but Iike some, I'm disgusted with how some have utilized this forum as a resource to party.

Money ain't going to fall out of the sky for anybody. I don't care who you are. As far as action goes, most action today is made by an appointment. Backers and stakehorses can be arranged per event, beforehand, rather than an commitment for future funding.

There are avenues for players like Jayson to avail themselves. The only thing needed is time and effort to find the best one for him. AzBilliards ain't that resource.

Good luck to Jayson. He's fun to watch with his fast and loose game. I always thought he and Rodney would be a great, FAST, match.

The problem with pool is, there is no money in the periphery. To make money you can't depend on tournament winnings. Take your friend Keith for example. He actually has the name to possibly make a few bucks outside of the game but as a result of playing the game. Take this example.

I can easily see a commercial like this but with a pool theme. In fact, like with the old Miller Lite ad pool has some good visuals that would interest advertisers if pitched right. If I was someone like Keith I would have an agent and give it a shot. There is no telling where something can lead.

Aye, there's the rub.

JAM, Jayson isn't looking for handout or people to pull together and help him. He's looking for a regular backer. There are a lot of people reading on azbilliards and already two people have contacted me who are interested. I don't blame them, he's quickly becoming a superstar.

Sorry if you feel this shouldn't be on the forum, but I don't see an issue with it.

Not to switch gears but I have spent some coin backing part of some poker player's actions on 2+2. Most of the time they have some of their own action (makes them more accountable). Some do stakeback packages, which basically is a free roll and has less value to the investors vs the first choice. That being said I have even bought a little bit of those just to sweat the action.

At the end of the day take X amount of dollars that you can invest and not worry about losing, and put it on a horse who sounds like he is focusing in on his game. Some people just like the action so I don't see anything wrong with someone doing this...just know what all is involved and the risks that are associated this (as well as all the tax info etc).

Good luck Jayson, hope someone puts you in the box!

That video was cute. :)

I agree. Jayson Shaw has personality and emotion, which he should capitalize on it. Playing pool in professional competitions ain't going to cut the mustard.

He was indeed sponsored by Str8 Shots, meaning they were responsible for his entry entry fees, transport etc....

Not any more. Interesting story no less

Is this a Business Deal

Is this a One Way Street...........
Where only the winnings are split?

First the Expenses must be paid off the top.

Then the Winnings and also the Losses are to be split.
What is the percentage of slit 50% seems fair.

Any money made at the Event whether at the tournament or gambling outside the tournament must be split.

If the player get's drunk and fails to be on time for the tournament.
He should be fined for his lack of professionalism.
Fine should be Expenses.

No your girlfriend can't come.

I sponsored a well known Filipino for many years and we always made money.
Last year he brought a Women with him, it cost me a $1000 for a room.
He didn't make a dime, his mind was not on pool..
He had a great time though.

This is a Business deal, not a place to have fun and lose your backers money.

Gotta Go, My wife is going thru my pants taking my gambling money.

I'd like to hear that story.

I don't know the exact reasons for the "separation".

Jayson was under contract which I imagine had code of conduct and obligation clauses. Jayson has been a little temperamental lately. Whether what he did warranted the separation, or whether Str8 is cutting back, changing direction or there was a disagreement - I honestly don't know.

Tell Jayson he still owes me $150 from the Derby when he decided to quit a set early and run to the airport without picking up the phone and calling me.

Looks like Kim reads the Boards quite regular. Just waiting for a chance to pop in.

And here I thought she didn't like the place.

I'd like to hear the story as well, at least Kim's version, in which I have no doubt will be
coming soon.
